Janam Extends Palm OS Garnet License
While we somehow managed to overlook this news item on its initial August 30th release, since we've been covering a good bit of Palm OS news of late courtesy of Aceeca and Motion Apps' Classic, this one is certainly worth a mention.
Janam Technologies LLC, one of only a handful of Access' major Palm OS licensees remaining active, announced that they are extending their licensing agreement for the Garnet OS. Under the terms of Janam's agreement with Access Systems Americas, Inc., Janam will continue its XP line of ruggedized Garnet-based handhelds through 2017, five years longer than originally planned. First launched in 2007, Janam currently fields two ruggedized Garnet 5.4.9-based models for industrial applications, the monochrome 160x160 XP20 and the color 240x320 XP30. Both have integrated barcode scanners, numeric keypads, and 802.11b/g wireless connectivity. We initially covered these devices during a sneak preview in 2006.

What I find more interesting than anything else here is that Janam apparently has managed to get 802.11g fully functional under OS 5.4.9....something that has thus far eluded Aceeca. I had previously stated here that the PDA32 would be the first Palm OS device with "G" support. Looks like Janam beat Aceeca to the punch by a good bit but no one paid attention to it (including all of us!)

Rich, is your app dependent on WWAN connectivity or can it run on any ol' Palm OS device (PDA, smartphone or otherwise?)

You know, you might want to look around for a cheap little used Zire or Z22 in case you need to eventually up carrying the smallest possible Palm OS device just for BalanceLog purposes alongside your Droid or whatever other phone you currently have activated.

Yet more clarification...
For me, resuming a PalmOS lifestyle includes going back to PimlicoSoftware's DateBk6. I am choosing to keep my contacts & use of contacts in the iPhone, however, because of the iPhone's deep integration of Contacts within Google Maps.
Anyway, there are different levels of PalmOS-ing nowadays. One level is calendaring and contact-ing on a PalmOS device. Another level is carrying around a seperate PalmOS device for one or three irreplacable apps.
I openly admit that my long-term goal is to revive the dead: proving to myself and others that one CAN be a successful PalmOS'er, even in these times.
Incidentally, I drove nearly 200 miles roundtrip last week SOLELY to buy my first-ever Palm TX. The next step is to mail the device to Minnesota so that Chris Short can soup it up with a glass screen, microphone, better switch, and Dimitry work-- http://www.PalmDr.com. If you want to buy one of his already refurbished units, there are only 24 left.
Candidly, I stopped following any developments in Palm's stand-alone PDA devices after going for the unity of the smartphone: after leaving the m515 for 4 years of Treo 650 & Treo 755p before the iPhone, it is interesting to compare the improvements that took place between the m515 and the Palm TX.
Did Palm ever massively extol the virtues of the Palm TX? Was there a justifiably huge advertising campaign? If not, why not?

As far as TVoR, I heard rumors are various Palm gatherings the past that the guy is / was in jail and was court restricted from using any computer with Internet access. Love to see if anyone has a straight story about this guy or who he really was. His posts were textbook mega-troll for sure!

I'm just wondering-- does this PalmOS device permit its owner to do regular PalmOS activity such as downloading apps and hotsyncing with desktop software?
Either way, I think that I need to refine my prediction of when the last PalmOS user will stop using PalmOS. Although I still believe that the date will be 2016, I think that I should amend the prediction to mean CONSUMER PalmOS devices, as opposed to this business/bar-code scanning device which evidently will last at least 1 year beyond 2016.
