OmniSky 2.0 Available this Week

OmniSky, the wireless ISP, today announced the rollout of its OmniSky 2.0 service. This next version offers up to 40% faster downloading of e-mail thanks to compression algorithms; the ability to send a fax, phone, or pager message; the ability to direct messages from up to six POP3 accounts into separate in-box folders; a customizable home page; and much more. It will be available this week to current and new OmniSky subscribers online or by CD.

OmniSky also announced a beta of the Corporate E-mail Program, which will allow OmniSky users to wirelessly get their e-mail from Microsoft Outlook 98 and 2000.

OmniSky currently offers its service within the U.S. in over 118 major metropolitan areas on the Palm V and Palm Vx. Through a joint venture with News Corporation, OmniSky expects to begin offering its wireless service internationally in the first half of 2001. They are in the process of developing a Handspring Springboard.

OmniSky 2.0 Crashes! Needs work

I upgraded to 2.0 & now my Vx crashes when I try to access E-mail. Also, no instructions on the My Omnisky either. I'd hold off before upgrading. :(

NOTE: We are receiving feedback from some customers that they are experiencing difficulties with their OS 2.0
transition. We will make the 2.0 upgrade available as soon as we are confident these issues are resolved.

I too am experiencing crashes with OS Mail. Like a dolt, I upgraded too soon.

There's no damn service in OC, which is like the Silicon Valley of the South.

I talked w/ a salesman @ CompUSA and he said they were complaining of weak sales of hardware and subscribers when they KNEW about the lack of access.

Dumb.

Upgraded Software . . . Great! How about Expanded Coverage!

Glad to hear of all of the upgraded features of Omnisky. However, living in the Milwaukee area, I'll never know. Omnisky should focus more effort on expanded coverage over the CDPD network so more of us can appreciate what they have done. I haven't seen their coverage grow at all over the last year . . .

It is not Omnisky's fault that there is no coverage in Milwaukee. There are no wireless providers that support CDPD in the whole state of Wisconsin. Even cellular phone coverage is spotty. This might be a state thing. You'd think a major city like Milwaukee would have a CDPD network set up. So, basically, Omnisky can't do a thing in WI until some wireless carrier builds a CDPD network there.

It seems as though Omnisky's OS 2.0 wasn't ready for prime time. I downloaded the 2.0 via the link provided to by OS via Email. However, it gave me a Fatal Error when I tried to access the OS Email program. When I finally got through on the tech support line, I was told that I "had a corrupt install". The fix was to go to same download page as before and go to "the bottom of the page" and select "download all files". Unfortunatly, the page vanished only to replaced by the following:
Release 2.0 Upgrade

transition. For this reason, we have placed upgrade activity on hold temporarily. We will make the 2.0 upgrade
available as soon as we are confident these issues are resolved.

This turned out to be a 7 hour BETA...
I then had to uninstall OS 2.0 & reinstall 1.0....
