Rumor: Two New Cheaper Clié Versions Coming

CDW appears to have jumped the gun on Sony and is allowing pre-orders on a couple of new Sony handhelds that haven't yet been announced. CDW's webstore is offering the PEG-S320 for $189 and the N610C/V for $377.

The PEG-S320 looks like Sony's first handheld aimed at the low-end of the market and is possibly a replacement for the black and white PEG-300. The N610C/V is likely the N710C without the DSP, which allows MP3 and ATRAC3 playback.

CDW doesn't give any details or have any pictures available. Sony's own SonyStyle site doesn't yet have any information at all on these two new handhelds.

SonyStyle still lists the PEG-300 at $300. It is not yet known if Sony will discontinue this model to be replaced by the PEG-S320 or if they will keep it on to be their Palm Vx equivalent.

Sony recently stopped selling the PEG-S500C in Japan. This was the color version of the Clié that was never released in the U.S.

Update: More information on the Sony PEG-N610C/V is now available.

No wonder Palm is worried.

This is going to hurt Palm. A $377 color Clie with high res. and brighter screen vs. a $450 m505 with low res. and dimmer screen.

Not trying to start another Clie vs. m505 war, but you have got to admit that Palm is in trouble.

this is a real tough one for palm. i own a m505 and the only "advantages" i really like are its MMC/SD slot, slim form factor, and for now, OS4.

i can't wait for palm to *please* release a fix/hack for adjusting the front light. that should at least satisfy m505 supporters like myself.

i'm not much for the audio since i have a minidisc, but yeah, the 320x320 hi-res screen is killer.

The $377 model doesn't have audio.

Sony and Handspring Worried, too
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/14/2001 9:09:39 AM #
I'm frequently baffled by the smug tone Sony users have about Palm's difficulties. If Palm Inc. goes under, I think they'll take the whole Palm platform with them. While Sony, IBM, or even Apple might buy Palm out, the resulting confusion can only hurt R&D. If the hand over goes relatively well, I'd guess OS 5.0 would only be delayed a few months. But if the transition isn't smooth, OS 5 could be delayed until no one cares about it any more because Microsoft already owns the handheld market.

So you N710C buyers need to accept that the fate of future Sony handhelds is closely tied to Palm's financial health. Rather than regarding m505 buyers as your enemies, you should realize that we are all in the same boat. Just part of a boat can't sink.

If Palm goes down, your Clie's are going down too, you know. That's like an engine company exploding. No cars can run, because none of them have engines (bad analogy) :o)

When Palm goes bankrupt, Sony will own the Palm OS

I looked at the new Clie and strongly preferred the m505's screen. If Palm supported 320x320 then maybe it would be easier to go with the Sony -but as yet this is not well supported and isn't likely to be until Palm does it too.

If Palm goes bankrupt, Sony will dump the Palm OS and get a Pocket PC license, which will be a black day for all of us.

Wonder if the N610C will be thinner than 710. If so my Palm Vx's days may be numbered.

I doubt Sony will totally redesign the N610C. It would be much more efficient if they could use most of the same parts in both models. Efficiency saves money. Besides, this way lots of add-ons can be used by both models, like cases.

Yeah, but I hope it will be lighter because the extra DSP hardware is removed. Perhaps the same weight as m505? Cool.....

I'll assume that 610 will be same as 710 w/o the DSP chip and headphone jack. The formfactor is actually just as good as of the Vx/505 (IMHO) - go to your local compUSA/BestBuy/CircuitCity and check whether you agree.

SInce I already have an MP3 Player and don't care about video playback, the promised 610 seems to be just the thing - I'll buy it at below $350. ;-)

CDW

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/14/2001 9:47:28 AM #
I called CDW today for their word on shipment or product information. Pretty much all I got out of the guy was that it is a "new product" and no information has been released to the sales reps. He did offer to e-mail me when product info. became available but I passed up that offer.

Palm in trouble

tom @ 6/14/2001 4:05:06 PM #
Palm licenses the os to sony so they win (maybe in a smaller way) when sony sells a device. If sony sells a device and palm doesn't make money then their licensing fees should be re-evaluated. its ppc's and the slow economy that are the real problem.

m505

Isaac Dabbah @ 6/14/2001 9:29:12 PM #
I buy the m505 and I very disapointed in some points:
1- The resolution screen its not so good.
2- The bright its poor.
3- Dont come with mp3.
4- Dont come with microphone.
5- The Palm OS doesnt have many new features.
6- The most of the programs doesnt support the expantion card.
7-The free programs that come with the Palm are not the best programs for his area.
8-The grafitti area its not removable.

I dont understand why they want to give the buisness to microsoft.

Can you let me know more about this? Thank you.

I hope the new versions are less cheesy looking

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/15/2001 10:49:36 AM #
I hope sony makes the new versions less cheesy looking. I'm sorry, but the flashy chrome on the bottom of the Clie 710 just doesn't do it for me. Makes it look cheap

m505

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/15/2001 1:06:21 PM #
Didn't like that new m505? Chelk out the HandEra 330. The 330 has a higher resolution screen, movable graffiti area, larger screen, audio recorder & playback, SD/MM *and* CF support and more. How much? - $350!!!

The only knock most would ive the 330 is it has no color screen.
