Send & Receive E-mail with MyHandEmail & AvantGo

MyHandEmail is an AvantGo channel that allows users to send and receive e-mail from any POP3 account. Multiple accounts can be set to send and receive e-mail. To use this, it is necessary to sign up on the service's website, enter the account information, then add the corresponding AvantGo channel. It is free and available now.

With any service where users have to give access to their private account to a third-party, security becomes a concern. On their company privacy policy, they state, "We will not divulge or sell your personal information." Of course, this info will have to be released if they are subpoenaed or if you are caught using their service for illegal purposes.

This is the second service of this type to be launched recently. Mobile Mail also allows users to check their e-mail but only certain types of accounts can send.

I've been testing MyHandEmail this morning and so far it works great. Though AvantGo has been running really slowly and I've been refused a connection a couple of times, that's not this app's fault.

What is the apps fault, however, is the very poor web page design. I signed up, but had to backtrack to find the avantgo channel link. Given how popular this could become, they should really make this easy to use for the unwashed masses...

Am I missing something here? The cradle where I hot sync my palm is 3 inches from the monitor where I ...check my email.

I tried to imagine a situation where I am both a) able to hotsync and reach avantgo and b) not able to check my email.

I gave up when the scenarios started to involve terrorists.

I live in the DC and ride the metro to work. Each morning I sync to download AvantGo to read on the train.

Try this: You are in the doctor's office waiting endlessly for your name to be called. To pass the time, you pull out your Palm and read the email you were sent overnight. You reply to a couple of messages and write a new one to your Human Resources manager telling him your company really needs a new HMO. When you finally get back to your desk, you pop your Palm into its cradle and HotSync. All your e-mails get sent. There, instead of the wait in the doctor's office being dead time, you've put it to use and you can get back to work as soon as you sit down.

Ok, I have to agree with the first poster...Am I missing something?
I already have my pop3 account set up to sync with the mail on my IIIc. I can read them while sitting at the dentist, on the DC metro, or even on the subway in NY. I can draft new emails and they as well, will be sent out when I sync again. Please, someone tell me what I am missing :)

OK, maybe If I had wireless access...


...and thats one to grow on.

OK, but I can do that already: with the Palm's Mail app and the conduit to Outlook. So what is the value added by using Avantgo for the same thing? Granted, I use Avantgo and I love it, but can't I already do this?

I think MultiMail will send/receive email directly from your SMTP/POP account without Outlook. I think AvantGo is doing what's called "competition". That's where you offer the same product, but try to make it better/cheaper. This isn't new folks.

This "Competition" thing you speak of, how does it work? Can software companies use it too? hmm...maybe one day it'll be viable in our world.

behind our firewall at work, i can't use the regular mail sync with outlook...i'm hoping that a service like this will help me get around that...again, so i can read my personal email on my way home from work on the EL and what not...not as much time at home to read and reply and stuff as i used to have before i reproduced...

If you have a set-up that lets you use your email on your Palm and you are happy with it, then this is clearly not for you. But if you don't, this might be a godsend for you.

There is at least one group who might find it handy: Mac users have to buy a third party conduit to let them connect their Palm with an e-mail app on their desktop. MyHandEmail is free.

I'm curious about this application and I'd like to use it but I'm wondering about something... When I check my e-mail on my desktop I don't leave it on the server. Doesn't that kind of make this app worthless? The only way the app would make sense is if the myhandemail website constantly downloads your new messages onto their server correct? Their website is somewhat low on details so if someone could let me know exactly how it works I'd appreciate it.

This is where the e-mail conduit is clearly better than My HandEmail. It can only find messages that you haven't already downloaded. If you take them off the server and download them onto your desktop, then they can't be also downloaded onto your Palm.

The only way to prevent this is to NOT download them. If you know you want to access your messages later on your handheld, don't download them onto your PC. Or at least leave them on the server when you put them on there.

It does seem like a useful app, but the comment that their website is low on contnet kida hit the mark for me. I started to sign up but then thought wait a minute I am trusting some unknown company to my private email box and I do not even know who there are. There is no information such as "About us," "Investor info," let alone how it works.

Actually one thing you can do is access your email on your desktop as an IMAP account. Then basically myhandemail will be able to download all your new messages from the server since IMAP leaves all messages on the server. Hopefully myhandemail leaves the messages it downloads on the server though so it won't ruin your IMAP setup...

It's an interesting option. Since I'm a Mac user running OS X I'm kind of left high and dry as far as syncing email with my Palm...

On the same monitor is my schedule, i still use my Palm quite a lot...

ohhhhh crap again! i didn't do that, and now i don't know where to get the file (figures!). oh well, got it to finish syncing, but now it's givng me invalid password issues.

i dunno, maybe my palm s destned to not have e-mail . . .

Poor website, but excellent software. Works extremely well, retrieved e-mail from various accounts without a slightest problem. Eventhough I use multimail Pro III while on the road, this software is great when you are at your desk, avoid paying extra charges to have your e-mails on your handheld (in my case I use GSM to connect while on the road, which is costly).

You have to go to their site and sign up first. Then follow their link to add the AvantGo channel.

I've given this a try & must admit that I'm impressed. My company has a policy against personal e-mail so, when I hotsync @ work, at least this way, I can read and respond to my personal stuff at lunch.

The third sentance in the article is "To use this, it is necessary to sign up on the service's website, enter the account information, then add the corresponding AvantGo channel." If you went straight to AvantGo to sign up, you failed the reading and comprehention part of the test and will be forced to ride to school on the short bus from now on.

I may try it because yahoo and outlook doesnt work when it comes to sending mail. Does anyone know if hotmail has an outlook compatible pop3 configuration? Thanks...

There is a lot of trust involved in using this service. What does anyone know about the company? You are giving a lot access to an anonymous company or individual. They might even be able to view personal, business related or sensitive email correspondence. All with your permission.
