Companies Announce Services for the i705
Since the wireless Palm i705 was announced early this week, companies have been announcing services to enhance the experience. Email and other information dictated to Copytalk will be wirelessly sent to the handheld using its push capabilities. PrinterOn will allow an i705 to wirelessly view, fax, and print documents over the Internet. Switchboard will allow users to access yellow pages entries from almost anywhere.
Copytalk will be the first third party to support the push capabilities of the Palm.Net wireless service, letting email and other info dictated to Copytalk be sent automatically to the handheld.
Copytalk subscribers need the free Copytalk software, and to indicate that they have an i705. They can then call the company's toll free number and dictate naturally, as though leaving a message for a personal assistant. Email can be sent by simply saying the recipient's name and then dictating the message. Copytalk also allows subscribers to dictate memos, contacts, appointments, to-dos and expenses - the standard built-in apps.
Copytalk transcribes the dictation and notifies the i705 via the Palm.Net wireless service. The i705 then contacts Copytalk and retrieves the information. If the i705 is turned off, or is out of range of the wireless network, the notification is automatically queued and resent, guaranteeing automatic delivery later.
The Copytalk client for the Palm i705 is currently in limited release, with public availability expected by late February. Copytalk subscriptions start at just $10/month.
PrinterOn will offer wireless Internet document viewing, faxing, and printing via PrinterOn PocketWhere for the Palm OS. This will be integrated into the MyPalm portal, accessible with the i705 as part of the Palm.Net wireless service.
The application takes advantage of the handheld's built-in wireless capability by allowing users to view, fax, and print documents and email attachments. Users will be able to output documents in black and white or full color to networked printers - regardless of where they're located or who makes them. PrinterOn supports more than 150 file formats.
Switchboard's online yellow pages will be integrated into the MyPalm portal. This will allow users to locate names, phone numbers, and street addresses of millions of businesses nationwide.
