Picture Caller ID Available for Samsung I300

Samsung's I300 smartphone already has Caller ID , which shows the name of incoming callers. PDAapps has released I300PictureCallerID, which goes a step further. It allows the user to associate photographs with specific phone numbers, and the I300 will display the correct picture when a call from a particular number comes in. It, and several other utilities for the I300, are available now. I300PictureCallerID is $25.

Samsung has not released an API/SDK for developers to make applications for the Samsung SPH-I300. Despite this, PDAapps has been able to write several I300-specific apps by reverse engineering the I300, without any help from Samsung.

I300SpkrPhMgr makes it easier to use the I300 speakerphone. It lets users start the speakerphone by hitting the voice memo button when in a call, and turn it off by hitting the voice memo button again. It also allows users to set what volume the speakerphone starts at. I300SpkrPhMgr costs $7.

I300EasyKeyGuard allows users to engage or release the keyguard function without using the stylus by pressing two buttons. It is $7.

PDAapps also has a pair of utilities to improve the alert functions of the I300.

Thanks to Peter for the tip. -Ed

Umm, no.

There have been quite a few phones that supported pic callerid, long before the t68

This is news because it's for pic callerid for a popular Palm phone. I think it's the first time for that. Maybe.

I think some of you have missed the point of this site. PIC is here to let you know what is available for the Palm OS platform. An application doesn't have to be the first one in its category to qualify as "news". If that was the case, we wouldn't run half the stories we do.

Not all stories will apply to all readers. This one may be very interesting to I300 users but few T615C users are going to care. That's fine, but I300 users would still like to know what is available for their smartphone and I hope to be able let them know.

Keep this in mind the next time you are asking "Why is this news?"

Can the t68i run thousands of third-party applications? How about use Microsoft Office files? The t68i isn't a bad phone but it's pretty limited compared with any of the Palm OS smartphones.

Umm, no.

More than a year ago my Sanyo SCP-5000 supported picture caller ID. My new Sanyo SCP-5150 still does, and with a much nicer brighter screen.

SonyEric is SO overrated!

good point. if this's not correct, i can't find a reason why Ed would be reporting tinysheet supoort 320x480.
Excel in Windows can already do that in 1600x1200 ages ago.!!!

I emailed PDAapps, and they are working on a version of this for VisorPhone and Treo.

This should be a standard app included when you purchase the phone !!!

Why?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/5/2002 12:45:21 PM #
And why exactly would you want to do this? If you put the caller's photo in your phone wouldn't you already know what they looked like when they called? "Gee, Mom, great to hear from you? Glad you called, I had almost forgot what you looked like".

I dunno...maybe it's just me.

I understand it perfectly.

SONY ROCKS!

Fzara has it right. It's faster to recognize a face than it is to read a name. And of course, if you don't want the feature, don't install it. :)

>It's faster to recognize a face than it is to read a name.

Great. Thanks for the explanation. I guess those nano-seconds would add up. Think of all the time we'd save if all books were just pictures instead of all those time-consuming words.

If you only have 3 or 4 people in your address book, you probably don't need this. But if you have dozens of business contacts, you might have a hard time keeping them straight. Just because you know someone's name, doesn't mean you remember who they are. It's a lot easier to remember who people are with a picture and their name than just their name.

You mean, if we went to movies or watched TV instead of reading books? We already do that.

The picture ID software is just a fancy one to show off to you colleagues.

"Hey, how cool is that?"

Okay, I already have hundreds of entries for work & pleasure in my address book. But I'd be pretty hard up trying to go around take pictures of all of these people, particularly the acquaintances and businesses (hey Mr. car dealer, hold still and smile!). Most folks would get pretty creeped out if you're stalking around taking pictures of them.

This really is only useful for the personal entries.

You could take snaps of your love conquests in varying positions then when they ring you pass the phone around to your drinking buddies for a laugh.

I have an i300 but I must say I don't have much interest in this. I really think this is one of those gee-whiz things. If I have 20 people in my contact list, I probably can remember who they are by name. If I have 500, would 8MB really be enough to store all of their pictures?

if you work in a company like mine, there is a "faces image database" somewhere on your internal web. that's where i got images for picture caller id, and its useful-- very much so.
