Quickies: Handmark, SkinManager, Treo 300, Kinoma, NR/T Cable

Handmark has released Scrabble 1.1, which adds a full definition dictionary plus hi-res and Bluetooth support. It costs $10 to upgrade. Monopoly 1.1 is also available which adds support for hi-res and Bluetooth. This one is a free upgrade. -Dennis and Biff K

Brochu Software has released SkinManager for the Sony NR series. It lets users install skins in RAM via a simple HotSync, shows a preview of each skin before it is installed, allows renaming and deleting skins, and allows users to install both Graffiti and Status skins at the same time. SkinManager is $5. -PR

Sprint PCS has a page of PR info on its 3G services, which are due to be available soon. Linked from that page is a small picture of the Handspring Treo 300, which will run exclusively on Sprint's new CDMA network. It shows a typical Treo with a color screen and built-in keyboard. The Treo 300 is expected to be released next month. -Chris Whatley

Sony Pictures has a collection of movie trailers on its site in Kinoma format. -Ed

Purple Data Cables is now offering the PDCT-M9-6, a new adapter cable for the Sony NR/T series. It uses an improved version of the full-power RS232 technology that is used on the best-selling Purple Visor cables. Owing to these design improvements, it is compatible with more cell phones than any other Clié adapter cable on the market. It can also be used to connect serially with add-on devices such as GPS, modems, data acquisition boxes, automotive diagnostic interfaces, MIDI, etc. -PR

Monopoly 1.1 as well

They have released Monopoly 1.1 as well with the same Hi-res support. It is really cool, you can finally read the names on the streets!

Thanks, I updated the quickie.

If anyone is wondering why updating Scrabble costs $10 while the Monopoly update is free, Handmark says, "With Scrabble we pay a royalty to Hasbro for the new definition dictionary so we cannot afford giving it away for free."

That's an expensive royaltee.

I should have used the Scrabble Dictionary to figure out how to spell "Royalty"

That would be sweet, to play that over Bluetooth. It is so unfortunte right now that BT is so young. Imagine your family game is everyone spread through out the house, playing, LOL.

I just hope they changed the way the two player game operates. I purchased two copies hoping to play with my wife, thinking it would work like other IR games where you both see the action in real time. Not so with Monopoly: You take a turn and then beam the game, then the other player takes a turn and beams the game back. You often have to ask the person what they did. Confusing and not much fun. Handmark should spend some time with Ellams Software and learn how to do two player IR properly.

RE: Monopoly and Scrabble upgrades
eboychik @ 6/21/2002 2:36:31 PM #
I found the new Monopoly incredibly annoying. After nearly every roll, when you acknowledge a move by tapping the "OK" button, it gives you a pop-up message that the computer is moving, and asks if you want to end the game or continue. It slows the game down immensely. They're aware of the bug and are working to fix it.

Regarding the Scrabble upgrade fee for the dictionary, I emailed HandMark to complain, and they wrote me back explaining about the royalty, and the need to charge if they were to be motivated to innovate in their products, but here's my question: OK, charge $10.00 for the upgrade, but then the cost of the game should now be $39.99. Why should a new buyer pay $29.99 for the game with the dictionary, but older purchasers get penalized and made to pay $10.00 for the innovation? VERY unfair, if you ask me.

Maybe it should be the opposite: original buyers get the upgrade for free, but new buyers need to pay $39.99 for the game+dictionary.

Sonys movie clips

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 10:36:35 AM #
ARG! Why would SONY make kinoma movie clips in HI-RES but not enocode them with the 'Clie Audio' format???

I can download the trailers, and they look great, but on my 760C I get no sound.

RE: Sonys movie clips
Beavis @ 6/20/2002 10:48:37 AM #
I believe the "Clie Audio format" only works on the Clies that have MP3 and ATRAC encoding available. This leaves out the current T Series and the N-610 unless you have the audio adapter. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I tried to leave them a comment explaining that we would like clips made with the "Clie Audio" encoding at least for the Hi-Res clips, but the comments web page gave me a 405 when I submitted. *sigh*

Stuart Little crashes my T-615 every time about halfway through.

Nevermind. I deleted it and installed it again, and it is fine.

Well, if there isn't any audio anyhow, those folks won't be missing anything. At least those gave Sony the extra $$ will get something back from Sony for it.

And the Yamaha audio format only Works on NR and T series Clies, leaving out anyone with the n7xx series or a n6xx and an Audio Adapter.

And it better quality ...

Who cares about watching movie trailers on their handheld? For the amount of time it would take to download the file and install in the handheld you could just watch it on your PC via realplayer or something like that.

Well, it takes no more than a couple of mins to d/l on ADSL, and even less to install if you got a Memory Stick... ;-)))

Yea, but what if you want to show the clips to someone else, anywhere you want.

Example: getting the girlfriend to choose one of 12 movie clips you have with you at dinner.

If you have a NR70x, you'd understand

I don't understand. What is a girlfriend? I told my wife if I got a NR70x I would understand what the term girlfriend meant.

I tried that line along with a few others, it didn't work...

Skin Manager

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 11:44:03 AM #
There is already a free virtual grafitti and status skin changer.
RE: Skin Manager
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 4:00:58 PM #
Yes, that's true, but this program lets you preview the skins before actually installing them. I think it may be a little more "stable" than SilkSkinChanger (or whatever it was called), but I haven't been using it for that long.

If Skin Manager didn't offer any different functionality that SilkSkinChanger, then that would be one thing. But this program seems to work well, and it allows previewing. I just wish that it was able to see skins on the Memory Stick and only move the selected skin into RAM, rather than having to store all of the skins you want into RAM.

If you read the readme you'd know that memory stick support is coming in a future release. :)

Why Can't You View These Movie Clips In GMOVIE Also?

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/20/2002 8:15:37 PM #
newbie quesion, sorry if silly
RE: Why Can't You View These Movie Clips In GMOVIE Also?
Altema @ 6/21/2002 1:43:19 AM #
Kinoma Player is the new program with better quality and more options. It will play it's own clips, and is backwards compatible with gMovie.

It's the same situation as when you get a new version of Excel for example: Excel 97 can read Excel 97 AND Excel 95 spreadsheets. But if you have Excel 95, you will not be able to open most Excel 97 files because the program has been changed with new feature and options which did not exist in the older version.

The Player version of Kinoma is free, takes up only 142k of memory, and is excellent, so I don't really see any reason for sticking with the gMovie player.

then can I delete gMovie?
RE: Why Can't You View These Movie Clips In GMOVIE Also?
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/23/2002 10:14:22 AM #
Yes, you can delete gMovie unless Sony installed it in the Flash ROM, then you can't delete them unless you use JackSprat.
