PalmSource has posted more information on their upcoming developer seminars. The first of which will be held in San Franscisco Bay Area on May 6 & 7th. In addition, the date for the major annual PalmSource conference has been pushed back to February 2004.
PalmSource is holding three developer seminars this year, one in the San Francisco Bay Area (May 6-7), another in Beijing China (June 2-3) and a European seminar in Munich (September 22-23). The PalmSource Developer Seminar Series are two-day events designed specifically for Palm OS developers in different parts of the world. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with other developers, meet with key Palm OS licensees, and preview the latest tools, devices, and applications for the Palm OS.
There is a 20% early bird discount if you register by April 15th.
PalmSource CEO David Nagel will be the keynote speaker, talks will also be given by Michael Mace, David Fedor and others. The seminar agenda also includes developer sessions, tutorials and presentations. Attendees will also be given a sneak peek at Palm OS 6 and information on enabling applications to take advantage of the Qualcomm BREW Distribution System.
PalmSource Devekoper Conference
The Annual Conference will now take place in February 2004, and will be held in San Francisco, CA. The Conference will focus on the latest advances and features of Palm OS 6 and the latest vision of the mobile products industry.
According to the latest PalmSource developer newsletter, the decision to delay the Annual Developer Conference was made based on the need to support and sustain sales of the current line-up of Palm Powered products.

Chalk one up for my Predictions...
2004 ain't 2003, kids!
RE: Mike Cane was right --
This is not spin-meistering, gang -- I was there and it's what really happened. We shouldn't have tried to put the conference in December in the first place, and we should have checked with the licensees more thoroughly before we announced the date.
So now the conference will be in February 04, and we'll use the developer seminars this summer to communicate the new OS technologies (and new licensees) that people will see in time for the holiday season.

RE: Mike Cane wasn't right --
Seriously, thanks for telling us sotto voce to expect Palm OS 6 *this* year.
RE: Mike Cane was right --
Please elaborate. So are OS6 products coming out in 2003 or not? I don't think anybody cares if OS6 makes it within 2003 if devices don't ship until 2004. While it makes sense that the OS would be completed before the device manufacturers can start building devices with it, I have to admit that I kinda like Microsoft's model whereby their new OSes (thinking desktops here, too) are released in conjunction with devices/desktops that have it.

RE: Mike Cane was right --
IE. whatever the spin will be, it's 6 months late.
Why should consumer care if a Palm Dev. on november or feb will affect their christmas purchase or not if they know all handheld will be upgradable to the new OS.
so, it's either late, or Palm Inc really cannot convince consumer that the New OS will transition into legacy devices smoothly.
RE: Mike Cane was right --
I'll say Q3 2004 at the earliest (ie. one year late) Hey it's better then OS5.0 which was 2.5 years late.
RE: Mike Cane was right --
Your taking this as fact, when you know very little about the true state of affairs.
IIRC OS 5 shipped in June of last year, with the first devices making it out in Q4 of 2002. It's not June.
RE: Mike Cane was right --
I'll try to settle some of the confusion, but obviously I can't talk in detail about all of our future plans.
--We've always said that Palm OS 6 will ship *to licensees* this year. That's still the plan, and I'm confident about it. When it ships to users installed in hardware is up to the licensees, and I hope PalmSource hasn't made any public predictions about that, because we shouldn't. It's up to the licensees, and depends on their schedules.
--There's another assumption everyone's making: that you won't see any enhancements to the OS prior to Palm OS 6. When we first briefed people on our road map, we said that we were in discussions with licensees about which features they wanted first. They had a lot of feedback for us, and you'll see the results at the developer seminar, if not before.

RE: os6 on which device?
upgrades?
Assuming that the new OS fits in the ROMs and that the devices have safe reflashing support, that's still up to the each licensee. Some licensee's have provided OS upgrades in the past, some have not.
RE: Mike Cane was right --
Sony. Sure as hell they won't upgrade, unless hell freezes over. And they have every reason not wanting consumer to know what cool features OS6.0 will have 4 months after plunking down several hundred smackers on that christmas gift.
then there is Palm Inc. Good luck getting a straight answer if 6.0 upgrade is a painless upgrade process or not. That company is so screw up, it takes them 3 months to fix audio problem and they still haven't release web browser they say they are going to release from last year press release.
Palm Source? They'll give you a variant of
"upgrade? go ask licensee, it ain't our problem",
"it's on time", "we never promise a release date",
"blame Saddam/weak market condition /terrorist /snow storm/ SARS/ North Korea has nuke"
RE: Mike Cane might be right --
...er, 12/31/03 is still 2003...
I can see it now: 12/31/03 11:59PM -- the ROM is made available to licensees. Of course, if we count Japan, that's already 2004...
(I like giving Mace a hard time! He's such a nice guy. And he knows that Palm has screwed up for years and years and years -- and none of want it to continue that, er, heritage.)

RE: Mike Cane was right --

This make sense
Frankly, I welcome PalmSource not coming out 'til after the the Christmas buying season. This preview-o-rama, two day tour is going to be good for all of us to see how much of out code breaks under Palm OS 6.
Just make sure the pizza and twinkies are served at the coding labs.
RE: This make sense
ehrr.......guys, you know all those new gadget you've just bought last christmas? well OS 6.0 won't run on them, why do you think we decide to weasel out the conference till now. Happy new year anyway.
..........groan....
