New PalmSource Software Store

PalmSource has unveiled a new software store which offers more than 20,000 Palm OS software titles and on device wireless apllication downloads.

The new PalmSource software store, is powered by PalmGear and enables users to conveniently try, purchase and download more than 20,000 software titles in a broad range of categories including: Web browsers, email and Internet communications, sales force and field automation, personal productivity, groupware, financial management, multimedia and games to customize their Palm Powered smart mobile device.

Users of Palm Powered smartphones and other Internet-enabled handhelds can also access the new PalmSource software store while on-the-go, providing customers the ultimate flexibility to browse, purchase and install select wireless Palm OS software applications onto their devices via over-the-air (OTA) delivery. These select applications have been tested by PalmSource for easy OTA delivery and draw from the more than 20,000 Palm OS titles available today. Pinpoint's provisioning and delivery infrastructure makes Palm OS applications available for OTA delivery to customers in a user-friendly fashion.

The mobile store is located at: www.palmsource.com/mobile/. Supported devices for OTA delivery include the Treo 600, the Kyocera 7135 (With expansion card) and the Samsung SPH i500 (with a browser update).

"The launch of the new PalmSource software store marks an important milestone in our company's objective to create a successful global marketplace for Palm OS content," said David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of PalmSource, Inc. "PalmSource is committed to providing its 275,000-strong developer community with additional software distribution channels that ultimately improve customization and usability of Palm Powered smart mobile devices and will drive greater adoption of smartphones."

"As a strategic partner of PalmSource and largest provider of Palm OS applications and eBooks, we look forward to the increased exposure Palm OS applications will have by leveraging PalmSource's strong brand and leadership position in the smart mobile device market," said Ryan Wuerch, president and chief executive officer of PalmGear. "Through the PalmSource software store our developer and publisher partners have expanded distribution channels and increased sales opportunities for their content."

Launched in the fall of this year, the German PalmSource software store is powered by Pdassi and offers German-speaking Palm Powered device users a broad selection of applications to personalize their device to fit their needs. The store also showcases the 2,000 German developers from among the over 5,000 European developers whose Palm OS solutions are now available in German versions.

One VS. Another

Gar @ 11/18/2003 2:32:42 PM #
How do they decide between what is normally on PalmGear VS what will appear on PalmOne's store?

It looks like they just have their own front-end to the PalmGear back-end. All of the content seems to be the same, down to search results. I guess PalmGear remains in greater favour then Handango.

Actually, I wonder if we're going to see "Powered by Handango" drop off the PalmOne software site anytime soon...

PalmOne is the hardware company. They run PalmStore, which is powered by Handandgo

PalmSource is the OS company. They run the PalmSource software store, which is powered by PalmGear.

Clear?

OTA?

abosco @ 11/18/2003 2:50:07 PM #
What does OTA delivery do? Does it enable someone to download a program to RAM and have it automatically appear in the launcher without having to install anything? Not a bad idea, but I've been doing this for a while by downloading the program to an expansion card, then unzipping the PRC in the ZIP file using ClieFiles directly to RAM.

OTA means "over the air" and allows you to download and install without a computer.

SproutPaint

sproutworks @ 11/18/2003 10:42:23 PM #
That store is awesome. When I searched for paint, my application, SproutPaint, shows up on the first page. SproutPaint only has about 500 downloads, so it would always appear on the 8th page or so in the old palmgear site.

No offense, but why is it a good thing (for users, not for you) that less popular apps get shown first?

Listing by number of downloads means the strong and maybe not best gets listed first. And their numbers just keep going up while a better product has to be searched for ten pages later. List by number of downloads or pay for placement are both methods that help the bigger names and hurts the smaller authors with their unique ideas. I don't have a solution to the problem other than to say listing by number of downloads just isn't the best way to list.

I attempted to send via PM to the poster though was unable to since the profile is not a valid one when clicking on his user name.

Lets keep this in perspective:

1. Parties on the cruise? There were two parties, if you want to call them that, neither were anything other than mixers minus the alcohol. One was simply a welcome get together the other an awards ceremony. Both were under 2 hours total.

2. "PalmGear Girls" ???, "..pool party on the last night of the cruise..." ?? What "PalmGear Girls"? That is frankly out of line and there was not a pool party on the cruise. Not sure who you are referring to when you say: "Trixie and Stacie"... That and the comment: "...along with their ample "talents"." frankly are uncalled for. Further I have no idea who Trixie and Stacie are...

The expenses for the cruise were budgeted and paid for by increased sales. The expense did not in any way affect payment to developers, current or past. ALL past monies owed (i.e. prior to approx. 10/2002) are being paid according to agreements reached with the developers.

It is fine to have your opinions though to post totally made up info as though it was fact is not.

Kenny

QUOTE: "They throw great parties on cruise ships with the money they made from those developers. The "PalmGear Girls" at the pool party on the last night of the cruise were unbelievable! Kenny can keep taking his 30% cut as long as Trixie and Stacie keep showing up at the PalmGear parties along with their ample "talents"."

TROLLS

RhinoSteve @ 11/20/2003 3:14:53 AM #
Man this is an interesting one. But I have past experience with other trolls posting insults on other sites. Usually, it is one of the following:

1) Someone is welching. However, Kenny (or someone claiming to be Kenny -- hard to verify Internet posts) is responding and not running so I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

2) We have a disgruntled individual here who for whatever reason, is out to get Kenny. These reasons could be, but not including be:
-- Envy
-- Fear of Kenny's Success
-- An bungled past attempt to defraud
-- A failed business of their own can't stand seeing someone else do better
-- Very, very, very bored

3) He didn't get invited to Kenny's parties and this is his last licks.

And finally, this stuff is MacWorld Lite IMNSHO.

Oh my God! They killed Kenny!

The best laugh I have had to start off the day in a long while. I'm surprised this hasn't been done 'til now.

as a developer who is also owed money

ardiri @ 11/20/2003 9:03:02 AM #
as a developer who is also owed money - i just simply refuse to put our software for sale on PGHQ, while they may be paying developers now; there is a lot of money still owning, which, will slowly get paid over three years (if you opted that way).

problem is, in 2002, when the money was owed - the exchange rate was 11:1 for USD -> SEK. now it is around 8:1 - thats just over a 25% drop in value. do we get interest on the money owing? hell no. does the USD keep dropping? yes. we lose out big time here.

we use our own webstore now - as, quite frankly ESD's dont provide much as they used to. if you are a developer, look at www.esellerate.net, great system. affiliate programs etc.. PGHQ/Handango et al are useless, unless you are prepared to pay advertising dollars.

just stop using them. simple.

we sold exclusively on PalmGear, hence why we were really burnt. you would think they would have had us high on the list of 'keep happy' :) but, anyhow, that is the past - and, time to move on from that.

we have noticed a drop in sales, but, maybe 10%. big deal. we can live with that. i know for sure that if we did pay some advertising dollars and so, we could get 300-400% more than what we do now - but, quite frankly, we are too busy/occupied to get everything organized and in place.

we most definately will go back and use PalmGear/Handango etc in the future - it is just a matter of time. we need to re-structure a few things internally here and do some serious updates to our products (ie: port them to SHARK). then, we will be in a better position to push our products through ESD sites.

if you are small fry, consider joining up with someone who:

- is largish
- has a reputation/name
- you can work with

we are entering a lot of partnerships with other developers right now mainly to become a HUGE group. if at least one of the groups products are visible, the consumers can get to all the rest. otherwise, your company is like a needle in a haystack. customers just wont find you.

of course, we are very active on boards like this - so, people, naturally click on the url in our sigs (hint, click me) :P

Hi,

I wanted to find out if any of you have taken legal action against PalmGear. Or if not, why not.

I would have thought you could go to the Better Business Bureau or the city where PalmGear is based and file a complaint with the District Attorney since it sound like they are in breach of contract and have broken the law.

Am I totally in left field?

The problem is: there isn't any official contract signed when PG providing us the services.

So ironically, when we signed up with Handango, we were annoied by the lengthy contract. Until now, we know how important that contract when we try to approach lawyers.

BBB usually takes small claims, at the amount PG owes us, we are not qualified.

I guess developers need to orginize together first...
