Palm Developer Podcast with HP's Phil McKinney
The latest episode in Palm's Developer Podcast series of videos features an "official" appearance by HP's Phil McKinney alongside the regular Palm Developer Podcase hosts Dion Almaer and Ben Galbraith. Phil McKinney is vice president and CTO for HP's Personal Systems Group, a unit of HP headed by former palmOne CEO Todd Bradley. Mr. McKinney is responsible for overseeing the HP business unit containing Palm's smartphones and WebOS, among other product lines such as PCs, laptops, mobile devices, displays and calculators.
In the 15 minute video, McKinney, a longtime veteran of the mobile phone industry, discusses HP's interest in Palm stemming from a desire to own the entire end-to-end experience and also firmly restates HP's interest in the smartphone business. One interesting tidbit from the video is McKinney's proclamation of being the "Palm evangelist" within HP and future WebOS formfactors. Other highlights include leaving Palm "as is", the task of educating all of HP's other divisions about the ease of creating apps for WebOS, and a new competition designed to kickstart WebOS interest within HP. And while nothing specific is mentioned, a direct reference is made to WebOS on a tablet or Slate-type device as well as the anticipated applications with apps on printers.

Large market share products is not Apple's forte. They are good at selling to the upper "self deserving" crowd that is more than willing to lay down more money for some extra metal and style above those of mortal men.
My guess is you will see a replay of the webOS / iTunes debacle when these HP webOS-based products come out. They will fly true and straight with Windows and Linux machines but it will be a bumpy ride with Apple products (as usual) with OS X and iOS integration.

how are the margins on printer ink?
how much RECURRENT REVENUE AND PROFIT do you think Apple could milk from its cult-like customer base alone just selling them Apple-branded printer ink?
would a Bosco or a Gary pay a premium to buy an Apple printer and ink over and over again? probably.

RE: fail + fail = win?
HP will not take the path of WebOS/iTunes syncing. HP will actually do this their own way an create an app that will sync the data to WebOS instead of the "hack" that Palm attempted with iTunes. If you have any doubt then look at their printer drivers. Most are included with MacOSX and yet they provide their own with a bunch of applications for printing, scanning, faxing, etc... Not that the OS X provided driver outperforms (color quality and speed) the HP driver for the Color LaserJet 8550. So the WebOS syncing app might be ugly but it will consistent across OS'es and it will not be a hack!
