RealPlayer Upgrade Brings Music Store Support
RealNetworks has released a update to the RealOne player that adds support for the new RealPlayer online Music Store. Real also says they will release a version compatible with the Treo 600 by the end of the month.
RealPlayer enables consumers to play MP3 and RealAudio files, as well as music purchased from the RealPlayer Music Store, on compatible palmOne handhelds. This marks the first time a PDA or smartphone will be able to directly transfer and play secure, digital music purchased from a major music download service.
Tight integration between the music store, in the My Library section of RealPlayer 10, and the palmOne devices makes it easy for consumers to download and go. Through simple "drag and drop," consumers can transfer secure music to their Tungsten T3, Tungsten T2, Tungsten T, Tungsten C, Tungsten E and Zire 71 handhelds. With the extensive market penetration of the Treo, Tungsten and Zire product lines, music downloads from the RealPlayer Music Store will be available for transferring to more than one million palmOne smartphones and handhelds.
To enable support for the RealPlayer Music Store on these palmOne devices RealNetworks has integrated RealAudio 10 with AAC and it's Helix DRM (digital rights management) for Devices into the RealPlayer that runs on palmOne devices. "palmOne customers have shown their overwhelming desire to play music with their handhelds since we first introduced the RealPlayer for our devices." said Ken Wirt, senior vice president and general manager, Handheld Business Unit, palmOne.
palmOne customers with a Zire 71 or one of the supported Tungsten handhelds can download RealPlayer 10 including the RealPlayer Music Store. RealPlayer 10 will open directly to the Music Store where consumers can follow links to download the RealPlayer for palmOne handhelds. The RealPlayer is seamless integrated with the handheld so consumers can easily take their secure Music Store files on the go. According to the company, RealPlayer 10 for the Treo 600 will also be available from RealNetworks at the above URL by Jan. 31, 2004.

RE: Apple Music Store
"Songs sold in the music store will be distributed in the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format, an open standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), rather than a proprietary RealNetworks format. However, they'll be wrapped in Real's own Helix digital rights management technology . . .
"Real says it has tapped into the workings of Apple's well-publicized QuickTime technology without any need to break through the digital rights management features that protect iTunes songs against unauthorized distribution.
"Instead, RealPlayer 10 essentially triggers the QuickTime and iTunes content-authorization process in the background, instead of breaking through it. That means that a computer must already have iTunes installed, and be authorized to play a given song, in order for the iTunes song to play in RealNetworks' software."

Double versions- wasted RAM
Granted, the Tungsten T2 & T3 have more than 16MB of RAM, but I personally do not want to use RAM and ROM for the same app... Another example is Docs2Go.

RE: Double versions- wasted RAM
Would it be nice to have the new version installed as Flash ROM over the old one? Of course. But no manufacturer does it that way.
