I wonder how many people would really use all of these features on a handheld application. Can the "Teal Paint power users" chime in on this?

Setting new standard? huh...?

The other guy has 24bit, support of pluggin, even anti aliasing for fonts. And this thing doesn't even support transparency layer?

ehrrr.. what new standard?

Pocket Artist (the program to which you refer) is only for Pocket PC. Evidently this is a new standard in Palm OS paint apps.

Thanks for pointing out that PalmOS 5 is seriously defficient in some areas. The advantages outweight the disadvantages for many people, however.

The lack of the above mentioned features have nothing to do with limitations of OS 5. Yes - OS 5 has numerous limitations - but none should effect the ability to have these features in this application. ARM programming is difficult with the ARMlet limitations (which i assume they utilize here) - but that should not be a show-stopper to adding features such as these.

oops - just re-read. 24bit is one thing i don't think OS 5 supports. As for the rest - they could find away for sure.

Palm OS currently doesn't support 24-bit displays, yes. (The infrastructure is there to support them if needed, though.) Are Pocket PC devices any different? Aren't they all using 12- or 16-bit displays too?

None of this has anything to do with whether the application supports 24-bit images. How an application internally manages image data can be totally independent of the operating system's imaging support; an application can store and manipulate images using 24 bits per pixel and can render them to the screen at 16 bpp as necessary.

This isn't a "draw" application anyhow (at least from the features I saw in the on-line user manual it isn't). It's a bitmap "paint" application. See Artelope, Leonardo and others for Palm OS drawing applications:

Thanks for pointing out that PalmOS 5 is seriously defficient in some areas. The advantages outweight the disadvantages for many people, however.

PalmOS is seriously deficient in every major area: windowing (no layout management), graphics (no antialiasing), fonts (no antialiasing, no scaling), kernel (no multitasking), storage (no consistent file system), user interface (no consistent dialog boxes), etc.

The only thing that makes PalmOS devices successful is that people have written lots of great software for it. But that's despite the OS, not because of it.

Indeed, it's true, Conduits' PocketArtist is head and shoulders above TealPaint; I love the Palm OS, but there's no serious digital drawing app available that has the true Photoshop-like features of PocketArtist, and more importantly, Photoshop file parity. I want to go back to the Palm, I really do, but there's not market for what I do (Art Direction). Also, why TealPaint would rather use Windows importers and exporters is beyond me.

Oh well.

It may cost you...

Just be aware that if you purchased TealPint PRIOR to July 1, 2003, you will be charged $7.95 for the upgrade. Those purchasing ON OR AFTER July 1, 2003 get the upgrade for free. Not a lot of money, but...

I've been following TealPoints software since I bought my first Palm in 1997 I've always found that their applications are all well-programmed and it's great that they continually update them with new features and so on... but the front end graphics are horrible and the use of colour for the icons just isn't nice at all.

They should pay someone else to do them IMO.

RE: Well coded but...
fitzsimmons @ 1/15/2004 7:26:48 PM #
Can't let this one pass without comment. I've followed TealPoint since its beginning too, and IMHO they has written a great deal of truly terrible software. They feature utterly awful user interfaces, designed by someone who has obviously never stopped to even consider the problem, and some genuinely ill-conceived programs. TealInfo being advertised to calculate tips, comes to mind, where it does so by employing a table rather than actually multiplying two numbers. Can you talk about someone more fundamentally misunderstanding software design than this?

RhinoSteve @ 1/15/2004 8:00:36 PM #
And I can not resist the tempation to smack back this troll that has no understanding of Vince and his TealPoint masterpiece.

Those at TealPoint have created the most impressive montage of Palm OS software in the business hands down. They take into consideration that Palm users are not technically savvy. They take out the "neat hacks" that may impress the Palm snobs but would just make the general Palm OS consumer confused.

It is a common trap to over feature Palm OS applications by some developers. TealPoint has consistently avoided trying to impress the "overvocal and underfunded" that are some members of
user groups and delivered very well done software to the masses.

Per your example, a table in fact is much more easier to use than say doing some general math to compute a tip. Who in the hell would pull out a calcuator to calculate a tip down to the cent?? If you have done that, I'm sure no second date came about ... if you are ever able to get a date at all.

To comment on what this thread started about, TealPaint 6 is very, very well done of an app. While it is hindered by the small screen Palm devices have now, it is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the "Palm OS Tablets" that are in the works.

And Vince, I'll buy you a beer at PalmSource next month for writing such a slick piece of code!

Nope, it is a simple app. And if you want to be a snobby , MENSA type, use a Linux PDA and recompile you kernal in your pocket.

"Who in the hell would pull out a calcuator to calculate a tip down to the cent?? If you have done that, I'm sure no second date came about ..."

Do you really think your date will recognize the difference between pulling out a calculator to calculate a tip, or pulling out a PDA to figure out the tip you should leave? And if pulling out a PDA is ok, the why not use the PDA's calculator?

If you can't calculate tips inside your head wile dating. Probably your date should dump you immediately.

Tealpoint have taken the microsoft approach to software - they've put new functions in rapidly and have lots of products targeting the popular niches.
They do not produce elegant, or orginial products. IMHO.

TealPoint Software has always made superior Palm apps.

Rhino, never learned to play nice as a child, huh?

Anyway, you can spew vitriol, wildly gesticulate (I can just see you now) and rationalize till the cows come home but it doesn't make TealPoint's poorly written/designed software any better.

Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives available, so we can all support whichever developers we please. I have to wonder though why you feel so threatened if someone has an opinion that differs from yours. But actually, I don't really care.

"Do you really think your date will recognize the difference between pulling out a calculator to calculate a tip, or pulling out a PDA to figure out the tip you should leave? And if pulling out a PDA is ok, the why not use the PDA's calculator?"

Simple, Palms are cooler than calculators and have a hell of a lot more social tool use since it has less buttons. (Read J.R. Whall if you have yet.)

And Fitzsimmons, the attempt at introverting me was cute but didn't work. You are not worth my time anymore.

Reasonable Price

At least this piece of software is reasonably priced for it's functionality. THere is a lot of palm software out there that is overpriced.

SproutPaint vs. TealPaint

sproutworks @ 1/15/2004 7:22:13 PM #
I've been working on my own paint program that has some features TealPaint 6 does not have, such as the ability to create your own brushes. TealPaint has a limited selection of brushes. SproutPaint brushes can contain mulitple colors. They did however, upgrade the painting index screen, it now displays color images. It still seems to run a lot slower than SproutPaint. SproutPaint still does not have high-res graphics though, but I am working on that. Please download SproutPaint 0.7 and compare for yourself.

It might be a good application; I may take a look later.

Please fix up the website; I mean it in the nicest possible way, but the webpage was nasty .. unnecessary gaudy animations, big fat buttons that obscure the real content, etc :) Keep it nice and simple and show us the goods liek the screenshots and the feature listing and all that. I ran away before poking around the site, since it was nasty :)

But definately keep at it; good show.

Pixmarker T

molsonbob @ 1/20/2004 2:09:30 PM #
One of the best drawing (rather than painting) apps I have used for the Palm is PixMarker. It is all I use for sketching on my Tungsten T. And it is freeware. It crashes once in a great while, but that doesn't bother me....

The website is not in english, but there are enough links in english to find the download for the software and to find the english translated instructions page.

http://www.yk.rim.or.jp/~wernyv/palm/PixMarker/index.html

I think I'll download a TealPaint 6 demo and compare...
