Documents to Go for webOS in Suspension

documents to go webos pre Users still holding out for a robust office document editing solution for webOS are going to have to keep waiting according to the latest news from DataViz. The longtime developers of the Documents to Go editing suite, which was born on the classic Palm OS platform, have announced that a long promised version of Documents to Go for webOS is at a "standstill" with no release date in sight.

The company has released a statement on its corporate blog detailing the situation. The company says they are continuing to work with Palm Inc., but "given the current environment at Palm", the company can not commit to a release nor build out the app it needs. DataViz still leaves the door open to a release at some point, but given the lengthy wait to date and the tone of the post it does not look hopeful at present.

Precentral is all abuz about simple apps to do what needs to be done. It doesn't seem theres a technical difficulty with this and money is money so what does Datzviz have against spending a few weeks tossing together some quick Doctogo app?

They can see that Palm is floundering right now. Why devote development resources to something that might be gone by the time they're finished? Think of the devs who got burned with the Foleo!

Agreed. And not just Foleo. Think about all the work pour into the Palm OS version of dtg, only for Palm to make the WebOS not backward compatible. It was a HUGE and UNFORGIVABLE mistake to abandon their past and burn their 3rd party development community.

I'm not sure it's really "resources" right now that are holding DV back. From the sound of it, Palm is in mgmt disarray and DV probably wants some $$$ or commitment to to bundle "D2Go" on WebOS. The "agreements" are falling apart and they are not going to invest more just to become another entry in the AppCatalog.

Please! How far away could they possibly be from completion after 1.5 years? It's not like their SW is ever stable anyway, so it's not like they are building apps that make Linus Torvald's (sp?) kernal look chintzy here.

Palm has always worked a business deal on bundling and right now everything has changed in the buyout culture. Until they are settled or sold, it appears at an impasse. JMO.

PS - I do agree with the Foleo sentiment. I wonder if Palm ever compensated these devs or just totally shafted them?

Where are all the optimists?

Perhaps all the gloom and doom has got some folks spooked. FSR would not be proud to work with Palm if they thought there was a chance Palm would not be around to service their customers.

North America has got to become a little more optimistic. Perhaps after 2011 the attitude will change. After all there is an "i" in innovation not in team.

"Frank Esser, SFR chairman and chief executive officer, said, "SFR is extremely proud to be the first operator to launch Palm webOS smartphones in France. This alliance comes within the scope of our strategy to provide the best user experience for mobile Internet and the widest range of smartphones to our customers."

This confidence in Palm is priceless. Those that can not afford Palm should back off and let Palm do what they do best. Those would be suiters are kicking the tires of a product they can't afford and it is slowing down Palm. Is all this buying attention starting to affect Palm's business. Other customers are very happy to work with Palm it would be nice to see that joy shine through rather than all the pessimists.

Ask the boys at Tealpoint what happened to the 10 or so apps they had developed waiting for the Foleo and you'll understand why the delay in the appearance of a webOS version of Documents To Go was expected. Palm needs Documents To Go; DataViz doesn't need Palm. If Palm wants to see Documents To Go on webOS they need to step up and license a copy for EVERY device they sell. Developing and supporting an complex webOS app for sale to maybe 20,000 customers is a recipe for economic ruin. Palm will need to stop giving out exec bonuses and instead pay DataViz a few bucks per device sold to license a copy of Documents To Go for the webOS ROM.

I've been with Palm for 11 years.

I wanted DTG, but have learned to live without it as I learned to live without a lot of apps from PalmOS including Notes.

I ported all the other info out of old PalmOS apps.

I am ready to jump ship should I need to without a problem to another platform.

However, I am giving Palm one last chance.

I do enjoy the new cloud usability for calendar and contacts and the camera is terrific.

So common Palm, one more resurrection, I hate to see you go away.
