webOS Headed to T-Mobile?

Palm Pre Back Rumor: The Boy Genius Report has posted a rumor from one of their "solid connects" that T-Mobile is in the "final stages of planning out their WebOS device launch with Palm". The report is very light on details but it suggests that a "Pixi-like handset" is in the works. No word at this time if this will be a GSM version of the original Pixi as seen on Sprint or the improved Pre Plus with Wi-Fi currently available on Verizon. Of course, the term "Pixi-like" could suggest a different model entirely, as rumors have been swirling for some time about a 3rd potential WebOS handset. It's possible that T-Mobile could end up with the same mysterious C40 device spotted in Sprint's inventory system last year.

With a version of both the Pre and Pixi possibly heading to AT&T at some point within the next few months, Palm could achieve the major coup of wrapping up all four major domestic carriers with the addition of T-Mobile, a position the company has never held.

If true, this may turn out to be the biggest surprise news in quite a long time in regards to Palm and a new carrier partner. The device would turn out to be the first device from Palm on T-Mobile since the Treo 600 was originally announced for the network, nearly six years ago, though the carrier was previously a strong supporter of the initial Handspring Treo 180, 180g, and 270.

Loved My Treo 600 on T-Mobile

DarthRepublican @ 2/18/2010 5:29:43 PM # Q
After babying the relatively fragile 180g and 270 for several years, the 600 was a real revelation. Built like a tank and running PalmOS 5 before it was hacked to death and renamed Garnet, the 600 was a tremendous device for its time.

Darth,
You better keep that 180g. That may be the only one in existence! Everybody just seemed to nuts over the KB models, and the G area smartfones died the death at Palm from that day fwd. A shame.

Yes, the Treo 600 was utterly sweet. HS launched as a Palm @ the same time as the T3. Things really looked bright for Palm OS at that point. Just @ the time Nagle and company were loosening the lug nuts. Shame II.

My big problem with the 180g was this horrible bug that would always cause a hard reset every time I tried to open the Calculator. Worse PalmOS bug ever.

I hope so

HandyMan @ 2/19/2010 12:04:45 PM # Q
I hope this is true. This means all those wishing to use one of the newer Canadian carriers (WIND, Mobilicity, Videotron, Shaw, etc..) has a webOS choice because they all use the same AWS UMTS/HSPA that T-Mobile runs on.

If this is true (which I hope it is) I think it will have far greater implications than whatever (presumably small) # of units Palm will move through T-Mobile.

Palm will be able to tout that they have a WebOS device on EVERY major carrier in the USA. That's a position no one else has other than RIM. Sure, you have a hodge-podge of WM & Android devices of varying levels of desirability scattered around but Palm can tout that the T-Mobile WebOS experience will be nearly identical to the AT&T WebOS experience will in itself will be nigh identical to the VZW & Sprint experiences etc.

Good for Palm's marketshare and arguably ever better for their mindshare and developer relations. Maybe this will finally be enough to get some of the holdouts like eReader and DocsToGo Premium to finally release WebOS versions of their products. Even more significantly, maybe it'll push Palm to be more aggressive with their new hardware and keep adding features and tweaking the stability and performance of WebOS.

It's hard to see Palm going all out for TMob. But, if they plan on it, they had better bring some serious hardware to the table.
TMobs 2010 road map is phenomenal as far as Android and WinMob devices appear.

Why not?

Palm wants market share anyway it can. Just waiting for it to get on some of these discount, pay as you go carriers like Metro PCS and Virgin Mobile.

They are apparently in talks to bring WebOS devices to the Cannon / String network in the US. Only problem is changes needed to get another 3G frequency to be reliable over cotton.
