FCC OK's Verizon Pixi with WiFi

verizon palm pixi webosEngadget has spied a new FCC recordset containing some details on a yet to be announced Verzion branded Palm Pixi. The FCC reports go on to show a new CDMA based Pixi variant with the addition of WiFI to the standard feature set. The reports were originally issued on November 12th and mostly contain various technical analysts and related reports. Device photos and technical schematics have been withheld for the time being. The newly approved Pixi carries a model number of P121EWW, with the FCC ID of 08F-PIXEW.

With this regulatory hurdle out of the way, the path is now set for Verizon to begin offering its first webOS based device sometime in early 2010. The company previously made its intentions well known with a number of choice quotes from VZW's CEO and even big red's Twitter account gave some kind of confirmation it would at least offer the Palm Pre.

I think the 'verizon' part was a guess by Engadget

I don't believe anything solid points at this being a Verizon device - it may indeed be but the evidence that it is is rather loose.

Same Hardware?

Could the internals be the same as the current Sprint Pixi. More specifically, does the WiFi radio reside albeit crippled in the original, waiting for the hackers?

It doesn't speak well of Sprint if that is the case. Who ever imagined that stodgy old Verizon would be less heavy-handed than fun-loving, low-cost Sprint?

Verizon are a-changin'. They have a nice selection of global handsets (CDMA + GSM), have the Moto Droid with nothing other than a single Verizon logo on the case and zero bloatware, and now they may even one-up Sprint with the Pixi w/ wi-fi.

The last Palm device VZW offered was the Centro and they finally got it just in time to coincide with the Google Maps My Location functionality fix, but this is quite surprising IMO.

I figure that the Pixi was possibly originally intended to be offered in two versions, one w/ 4GB as rumored prevoiusly and the other in 8GB + wi-fi form.

What remains to be seen is if VZW will carry only the Pixi or if they'll have both the Pre and Pixi in the lineup. And, will that Pre be a 16GB or otherwise improved version?

January is going to be an exciting month for myself and other VZW users----Droid 2.1 update AND the first WebOS devices. Yeehaw!

Hopefully, the unlocked GSM model will also be sporting wi-fi. (And hopefully there will actually be an unlocked GSM model.) If it is I may wind up trading my Pre for one...

Major coup, if true

Palm desperately needs more coverage to legitimize the webOS. I'm not in the market for a new phone, and I didn't go with webOS to begin with, due to the lack of development thus far. But I'm still rooting for Palm
Peace Out
