Mac Zodiac Syncronization Software Released

Mark/Space has delivered a new version of the Missing Sync that brings Tapwave Zodiac Hotsync support to Mac OS X.

The Missing Sync for Tapwave, enables users to connect and synchronize information between a Zodiac and a Mac computer running Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later via USB or Bluetooth. Users will be also benefit from a specially-designed Game Installer developed for games sold through the Tapwave store. While many games designed for the Zodiac only include installers for Windows PC users wrapped in a .zip file, the Missing Sync Game Installer allows Mac users to drag-and-drop these or any .zip file for installation on the Zodiac. It also offers a High Score conduit that enables users to share high scores over the Internet.

Missing Sync for Tapwave leverages the rich audio/video capabilities of the Zodiac, making it simple to move music, audio and digital picture files between iPhoto or iTunes on the Mac and either of the handheld’s expansion card slots. To further enable users to organize and display photos on their Zodiac consoles, Missing Sync for Tapwave includes SplashData’s acclaimed SplashPhoto image viewer.

Additional key features of The Missing Sync for Tapwave include:

  • The ability to synchronize calendar events, addresses, memos and to-do items with the Palm Desktop software, plus synchronization of iCal(tm) calendar events, to-do items, and Mac OS Address Book contact information after installing iSync and the iSync Palm Conduit.

  • Synchronization support for Mac applications with existing third party Palm OS conduits (available separately with products such as Pocket Quicken, FileMaker Mobile, Entourage, Meeting Maker, etc.).

  • Desktop mounting, enables users to transfer files between the Mac and Zodiac’s two expansion card slots, essentially using the Zodiac as a card reader or for portable storage.

  • The ability to download email messages to any Palm OS email client (not included), read and reply while offline, then connect later to send and receive.

Missing Sync for Tapwave is available now for for $39.95. The Tapwave Zodiac 1 and Zodiac 2 are supported and require the Zodiac 1.1 Software Update, which will be available laster this week from Tapwave.

Missing Missing sync

ocspub @ 4/5/2004 2:26:54 PM #
Available now? Last I checked the Mark/Space site said "Coming Soon". Presumably they are actually waiting for the 1.1 release from Tapwave to become available before they are releasing the matching sync. Interesting that Brighthand also reported it as available the other day; does no one check facts anymore? ;-)

hmmm, I noted that it requires the Zodiac 1.1 upgrade, which is due to be released sometime this week. Markspace may have announced this a bit early

Yeah, actually it seems like their PR firm announced it early. Their PR firm actually posted the news in one of the palmOne forums at Brighthand. Time for a new PR firm.

This missing sync for mac sounds better than syncing with regular pc sync!

One Palm to rule them all!

I wonder if Palmsource dropped included Mac sync because Apple is "rumored" (again) to be releasing it's own PDA w/ hard-drive ala iPod?

It seems like a drop in palm to mac syncronization would only help the sales of apple's new device. All of the palm users would turn to apple rather than stick with palm and use missing sync.

What everybody got excited about was BS. It was a made up rumor about an Apple PDA after the Mac Zealots got offended another company dropped support for their favorite company like a bad habit.

The solution couldn't POSSIBLY be that the Mac market was too insignificant to justify spending the resources creating sync support for it. So it must be that they got wind of an Apple PDA and got scared. Yeah.

You should take a look at the OS statistics in PIC's front page poll. 20% doesn't look that insignificant.

So it must be that they got wind of an Apple PDA and got scared. Yeah.

You should relax a bit.

PIC doesn't reach every PDA user. It would be nice if it did, but it doesn't. It represents approximately 5% of all PDA users, and most of whom are in the top echelon of power users. It can be argued that Mac:PC is disproportional in overall PDA users when compared to the top 5% as represented in that poll.

Calm down a bit? That was sarcasm, not anger. Offended a Mac user, I did?

Man, Bosco, take a chill pill.

Unless you have some qualifiying statements, facts, or otherwise to back up your claims that the Mac market is "insignificant", please feel free to do so.

Making up posts that are uninformed and ignorant amounts to trolling. Sarcasm on boards sound a lot like insults. Give it a rest.

Chill pill? What?? Do I sound angry? Because I'm getting angry now that you're interpreting tongue-in-cheek humor with rage.

Want proof the Mac market is insignificant? Look at the current marketshare.

96% PC compared to 4% Mac.

Hmm, let me repeat that for shock value.

96% PC compared to 4% Mac.

PalmSource isn't a large company. If a third-party company is willing to take up the entire task of making Mac conduits for their OS, then why would they spend the resources to do it when they can better spend them elsewhere? If Apple really was a huge, essential part of the OS, PalmSource wouldn't rely on a third-party to do it. That alone is proof enough. What I said was I'd rather think with this type of LOGIC rather than trusting a zealous Mac fansite editor who enjoys making up rumors about how PalmSource got scared of a superior Mac PDA.

And believe me, I'll be the first to tear into crow if I'm wrong. But chances are, when Steve Jobs says he has ABSOLUTELY NO interest in entering the PDA market, he's going to stick to it. I'll take my chances with Jobs rather than a zealous editor.

Am I coming off arrogant? Perfect.

I guess the word "insignificant" can be used in different contexts. To a non-Mac user, it may appear insignificant based on merely market share. But, to a Mac user who makes a good living on the platform, it isn't insignificant at all. As for innovations, industry leadership, and stewardship of technology, I'd have to say Apple leads the pack here as well.

So as a counterpoint to your argument that market share is relevant, then I posit this: Why are there so many third-party developers for the Mac? Are they zealots? I guess that also makes Adobe, Microsoft, Macromedia and the like, "zealots" for providing, and continuing to provide, software that keeps that platform viable (or is it the other way around?)* Perhaps there's more to corporations than market share-- mind share and branding, perhaps?

You really should try out the Mac before making sweeping judgements based on one aspect of a company (its market share).

He said the mac "market" was insignificant, not the Mac itself. Aren't you guys being just a bit overly sensitive?

As far as the market itself, it could correctly be characterized either way, depending on your business purpose. Viewed by percentage, it's clearly insignificant. Viewed by number of users, it's huge. Palm obviously took the first approach, and I think to their detriment. But abosco's certainly allowed to disagree.

jack @ 4/6/2004 12:12:01 PM #
Um...OK.

quick clarification for elo:
1) I _was_ talking about market share.
2) Of course, everyone should be allowed to agree/disagree.

Are you sure you don't sound a bit... erm... unrelaxed? :P

I have heard those numbers before (and can be discussed). However, let's just assume they're right. The surprising numbers are the ones I pointed at; those that come from the PIC poll, which is a Palm-centric web site.

So, I ask again, seeing that you haven't really answered: are 20% of mac users, as registered on a Palm-centric web poll, such a low (or, as you said, insignificant) number?
(heck, even the 5% unix should be looked at... do you think a company ignoring about 25% of their customers is right?)

Tapwave 1.1 update available now.

dethblud @ 4/5/2004 10:04:47 PM #
The Zodiac 1.1 update from Tapwave that Missing Sync relies on is available now from Tapwave. They announced it this afternoon and it can be downloaded at tapwave.com.

And with that news comes the news that The Missing Sync is now available for purchase from Mark/Space's site.
