Doom Hacked Onto the Pre

Doom Palm PreIt's been a busy last couple of days for Palm Pre hackers, who've been poring over the webOS ROM image and finding out what makes it tick - and how to make it tick different. The latest milestone: a port of classic PC first-person shooter Doom (or technically, PrBoom, an improved version based on the original source code).

Sure, we've been able to do this on our Palm OS devices for ages, but it's nice to see id's 1993 masterpiece continue to appear on new platforms. Credit is due to #webos-internals IRC denizen Sargun, who seems to have achieved this feat by installing Debian on the Pre. You can check out the videos after the jump.

How quickly they find ways to port software - even without using the API...
At this rate I expect to see all DOS games + all MAME games ported to the Pre in no time!

Yeah, I have a tradition to play DOTT on every device I own :-)

Some clever guys out there

Plenty of sharp programmers around in the world today. As said before, how many great apps will there be after Palm release the webOS SDK? Hopefully, RIM's BlackBerry Connect is one of them...

But why did the Doom hackers shoot the video sideways? That probably wasn't so clever.

Just compensating for lack of wide angle - see it lots of time when someone's recording their friend dancing (or whatever) and they want to get the whole body on screen but not ant-sized.
