2nd update for 800w already?

JackG @ 8/28/2008 12:38:33 PM # Q
Well, as one who impatiently endured how long the Treo 700p took to receive its badly needed MR, it is so refreshing to see that already Palm has released two updates to help make the 800w work as it should. I hope they continue to offer this attentive support, as it can only help to regain customer trust. Thanks Palm, and thanks Palminfocenter for publishing this update info. This was the first I had heard of it.

Agreed. No complex electronic device ships without bugs, but it's the speed at which those problems are addressed that make or break a company's reputation. Palm has NOT had a good track record through 2007.

After enduring years and years of Palm's "we may or may get around to fixing it someday maybe if we feel like it and it's profitable for us" attitude, it's refreshing to see them acting as though they want their products to function even AFTER they have our money.

There are companies like IBM that keep fixing bugs and improving functionality for their Thinkpads for years and years after the machines are no longer sold, regardless if they will not be able to make a direct profit off the end user for the firmware fixes or drivers or software or documentation. Years later, though there are multitudes of competitors selling cheaper systems with "better" specifications - people still keep buying Thinkpads because they are well designed and IBM/Lenovo doesn't abandon their customers - even after the warranty is a distant memory.

Palm could learn a few tricks from the Thinkpad mentality and rise back - example: release the API for "my location" on Google Maps, release a firmware fix that has CURRENT application versions included, etc. When $600.00 can buy an entire laptop, Palm has been blatantly foolish to treat their Treo customers as lousy as they have over the years.

I personally believe PALM was held over a very expensive fire by Sprint to get the Bluetooth voice command stuff working and, quite likely, are either STILL over that fire for the GPS problem or will be soon if they don't produce.

Remember, that first patch brought one feature up to what Palm had in their sales literature (and probably what they sold to Sprint); the GPS problem is another feature that was similarly marketed and not delivered - since Sprint ==IS== the customer here, that customer has every right to be royally POed - and they hold the bags of money...

Joad's right but actually Palm's had major problems ever since the m505/m500 SUDS fiasco of 2001. The OS5 era brought the T|T without the MP3 playback capabilities it was advertised with AND sound quality issues AND weak audio output volume. Things got worse with the T3 SD card toasting bug and the myriad of issues introduced with NVFS on the Treo 650 and T5. The LifeDrive came next and was arguably the worst Palm product ever. The 700w & 700p of 2006 had their fair share of memory and peformance-related bugs as well.

Fortunately, Palm's been improving ever since, albeit very slowly. If you jettison all of the "old" Palm products and proceed forward with the Centro, 800w and Treo Pro, you have a pretty solid lineup that's stable (if mostly unspectacular).

Now, that said, SV is definitely on the money in regards to the carriers making Palm fix all of these issues ASAP. That's one thing we (the end users) have in our favor. Ever since the 700p fiasco, you can bet the carriers are going to be VERY hesitant to take any kind of pluge with Palm without having absolute certainty any issues that come up with be speedily addressed. That'd make me very nervous if I were a potential unlocked Treo Pro customer,by the way. No carrier suppport/backing means Palm can be quite lax as far as releasing any updates (flagship device or not).

I recently dug out an old Matrix Millennium PCI video card from 1996. A fantastic card in its day, sure, but totally stone-age tech nowadays. However, Matrox supported that card until 2002 (Win XP) and it's always had a spot on my workbench as a spare/backup/test card due to the guaranteed availability of a driver for any flavor of Windows. That's the kind of small but still memorable support you like to see but is seldom practiced nowadays (certainly not by Palm).

Seeing as the TX, E2, Z22, and many other Palm handhelds never received any kind of major updates, the involvement & invluence of the carriers is definitely a good thing as far as keeping Palm "honest".

RE: 2nd update for 800w already? **Conspiracy theory**
bbtkd @ 8/28/2008 4:59:24 PM # Q
Conspiracy theory: Palm intentionally released the phone with several problems which they could swoop in and fix quickly with two patches - and they come off looking like they've finally addressed their responsiveness issues. More likely is that the bugs were found shortly before or just after the phones went to mass production and rather than hold up the release they worked out the patches while the phones were in production, then quickly released them.

Is that right!? I happen to have one of those cards (and a Mystique, too, I think). Now I know what card will be MY backup workbench test unit!

Thanks!

[I =think= that guy's somewhere "downstairs" installed in an old Pentium box right now. Not really sure...]

One more OT bit: 2nd update for 800w already?
hkklife @ 8/28/2008 5:36:25 PM # Q
Glad to be of assistance!

The Mystique is nearly identical to the older Millennium but it uses slower ram (SGRAM vs. WRAM IIRC), has a slightly lesser clocked RAMDAC, and adds a few extra 3d functions. For solid "workbench" cards, I personally rotate between the Millennium, a Radeon 7000 PCI and an ancient S3 Virge DX as needed and can recommend any of them.

I'm just glad to know that employees are still in the building with the abiility to write, test, and deploy a patch. That's never a bad thing to check in on around there.

There is no evidence to that effect and a smidgen of evidence - namely words out of Colligan's and Brown's mouths - that suggest that ability is outsourced.

And I knew 160GB HDs were coming weeks ago.

I expect some manufacturers will build units waaay outside the low-end MS XP spec and slap Linux on them which people can then strip off for XP or, better yet, Mac OS X. 4GB/250GB anyone?

Mike;

My time is limited. 'Tis easier for all of us to meet at the ol' PIC stomping grounds.

Well, the 945GSE chipset is currently limited (artficially?) to 2gb on all of these netbooks. And until 2gb SODIMM modules come wwaaaaayyyy down in price, 2gb is gonna be as good as it gets for the time being.

I just stuck a 200gb 7200rpm Hitachi HD into my 1000H, by the way. YEEHAW! That gives it a huge kick in the seat of the pants. I may still switch it out for a 5400rpm drive for the long-haul...but for right now I wanted to see if the 7200rpm drive could alleviate the Atom CPU's deficiencies in day to day Windows usage (it does, for the most part).

Carnivore is a system implemented by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that is analogous to wiretapping, except in this case, e-mail and other communications are being tapped instead of telephone conversations. Carnivore is a customizable packet sniffer that can monitor all of a target user's Internet traffic. It is a form of policeware. Carnivore was implemented during the Clinton administration with the approval of Attorney General Janet Reno. U.S. government officials have neither confirmed nor denied much about the physical or logical workings of Carnivore, but there are some facts that are generally agreed upon.

There is no Carnivore.

There is DCS1000, however, renamed to remove all the politically-incorrect nasty connotations of "carnivore".
