CDMA Treo Pro Also on the Way?

CDMA Treo ProRumor: Palm is also prepping to release a CDMA version of the newly announced Treo Pro according to an unconfirmed statement from a Taiwan economic news publication. Cens.com is reporting:

Palm is planning to launch CDMA (code division multiple access) version of Treo Pro series phone in the future for CDMA telecom service providers, like Verizon, Wireless and Sprint. The phone will also be supplied by HTC.

If indeed true, it would mark a return to dual CDMA/GSM versions of the same handset design for Palm. In the past Palm made both cellular flavors available for the Treo 270/300, 600 and 650, but moved away from this practice with some of its more recent smartphones.

It's worth mentioning that this is a completely unconfirmed rumor at this time. The Cens.com website only cites "company sources" and the article is rife with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes.

A report last week from Digitimes about Palm's new ODM relationship with HTC did not mention the possibility of a CDMA version. Palm itself isn't commenting on the possibility of a CDMA Treo Pro release.

WMExperts is also reporting that there has also been some unconfirmed speculation that in the US Verizon Wireless will actually pass over on the Treo 800w, in favor of holding out for the CDMA Treo Pro.

Thanks to WMExperts for the tip.

Palm Treo Pro?

Packerbrett @ 8/27/2008 6:44:14 AM # Q
So, when will they come out with a Treo Pro running a Palm OS?

I'd just like to know when Verizon will receive a new Palm Treo based phone, Treo Pro or 800w either would be fine with me.

i would buy a PalmOS Treo Pro from Sprint. BUT i think that FrankenGarnet is probably maxed out and couldn't support all of the hardware - it'd be overkill. Hence, it'd be like having a Ferrari powered by a mice-on-the-treadmill engine.

As a Treo, no it wouldn't make sense nor would it happen.

But using the Treo Pro as the inspiration/basis for a "Centro Pro" running Garnet? Absolutely.

Just from a basic hardware perspective, the following improvements could be easily done under Garnet:

-Larger keyboard (vs. the current Centro)

-Higher capacity 1500mAh battery (or sell the Centro Pro with a 1150mAh battery standard but offer the 1500mAh as an accessory, just like how Seidio used to )

-Improved stylus (even if it's still plastic, a thicker/better stylus would be a huge improvement)

-microUSB (this will piss off current Centro owners looking to upgrade but it would be nice to have Palm's lineup sharing as many accessories/peripherals as possible)

-3.5mm stereo headphone jack (would go a long way to making up for no native A2DP)

-Larger LCD

-2megapixel camera

So take the above improvements, toss in an updated version of the Centro's already superb software bundle and make a few final Garnet tweaks and Palm's got a solid model to get them through for another year or more. Palm could even keep the current Centro in production alongside a Centro Pro for a while and have a "free" Centro and a "$100" Centro Pro to offer Palm OS loyalists.

Given Garnet's shortcomings in regards to 3G, I could see a Centro Pro even making sense as a CDMA exclusive, if they can get Sprint/Verizon/Alltel/Telus all onboard.

Best Options if you're a Mac user:

CDMA:

1. Treo 755p (if you need big screen/keyboard/battery)

2. CDMA Centro

GSM:

1. GSM Centro
2. Treo 680 (if you need big screen/keyboard/battery or fullsize SDHC support)

THNX!
Sorry to hear well be a step behind...but, I still prefer TREOS over the other options.

Qualcomm chipset won't support Palm OS

sbono13 @ 8/27/2008 1:25:17 PM # Q
The TreoPro uses a chipset from Qualcomm that integrates the modem functions ("baseband") with an applications processor (MSM7201). That chip natively supports Windows Mobile and (now obviously) Android, but not PalmOS. All Palm OS smartphones have a separate applications processor.

Bottom line, there's no way to put Palm OS on the Treo Pro hardware.

I meant "hardware" more along the lines of various individual components of the Pro (LCD, headphone jack, battery, keyboard etc) + the actual exterior casing/housing, not the underhood stuff (CPU, chipset, radio etc).

1 Take the 312mhz Xscale Intel CPU + memory modules that power the current Centro

2. Insert it into a newly-designed housing that's INSPIRED by the Treo Pro but derived from the current Centro's.

3. Make the appropriate PCB & miniaturization changes where necessary.

Voila! A "Centro Pro" to slot in below the Treo Pro but above the current Centro and keep the Palm OS fans happy.

Palm has done facelift type jobs before......the Palm V was a Palm IIIx in a sleeker body and without the expansion slot. Th Zire 31 was basically a downsized, cost-reduced T|E. The 755p is just a "fixed", restyled 700p. And the Centro is a further downsizing/tweaking of the 700p/755p.

What a bunch of malarky. The Qualcomm chip has multiple processors inside, one to run the modem just like their older (MSM6500) chips and one to run the opperating system. All they did was put the separate application processor in the chip to make it easier for the phone makers so there is no technical reason why Palm OS couldn't run on it.

hkk - IMO, this is easier said than done given business, design, partner, and manufacturing logistics involved on this scale.

Treo Pro to CDMA rumors

JackG @ 8/28/2008 12:46:13 PM # Q
Okay, I am quite happy with my 800w. However, there are a couple of features in the Pro that I really like too. The flush screen, and the separate 3.5mm connector to name a couple. I also like the looks of the 800w, but at least from the pictures I think I like the Pro's styling even better. I think I would likely get angry if this came out too soon on Sprint, since I'm locked into a 2 year contract. Of course, that's because I've got this terrible sickness of never being able to be content with a cell phone for more than a year tops! :-)

Ah, rumors. You've gotta love 'em.
