Rumor: First Pics of the palmOne Tungsten TE 2

Palm OS Blogger Tam Hanna has found what may be some early versions of the unnannounced Tungsten E 2 handheld from palmOne. The images leaked out from the FCC, however not many specific details are known.

Tam writes, Not much is known about the internal hardware or the OS version. I personally think that the processor and the memory amount will be more-less similar to the Zire 72-why should PalmOne reengieer the planar two times? To all OS freaks-forget OS6 on this one. If the OS will ever debut, it will IMHO(!!) debut on a flagship product, and not on a cheap, mid-class handheld!

However, the screen is said to have a color depth of 18 bit, finally getting back on par with Symbian and MDA handsets. While the difference is subtle and cannot really be seen, its good for the numbers...

Good work Tam! There is also more info here.

Frenchie @ 1/6/2005 3:23:39 PM # Q
It definatly looks like a fake nothing more nothing less.

I'd laugh my head off if they had Cobalt on it ;)

The world will end in 2006. Just as it was predicted in the bible along with the release of Microsoft Longhorn.... :p

If you look through the PIC rumor archive:

http://www.palminfocenter.com/news_center.asp?mode=more&ID=4

We posted details about the TE 2 over a year ago! Turned out to be the T5! Rumors after all, are rumors, not always fact, though PIC is more often than not correct when we report on them...

I first heard of this yesterday on a tip from Dave's PDA Place. That site has a link to the FCC approval information. Unfortunately, since then the documents have been removed from the FCC site. Not surprising, as I'm sure they were posted by mistake.

Anyway, to make a long story short (too late!), this isn't a fake. Instead, it is one of those screwup that give handheld makers ulcers.

ok i take back what i said. No form factor change and a new athena connector instead of mini usb. Why is pa1m trying to make all of their new handhelds look like a TE???

Why would P1 make all their PDA's look like the TE...hmm...maybe because it is one of the best selling PDA's they have ever made. Companies want to make money while creating a unique style (apple ipod anyone?)

AFAIK, Dave's PDA Place site was the first with this news.

I even pointed to that:

I didn't have time to source this article this morning, but Tam link's to it, so I will edit later if credit is due.

Well, it was a question. I could still be wrong about Dave's Place, but his site is what everyone else is linking to and he has the most info, AFAIK.

WOW! Learn to put the right source! Tamspalm didn't even get the information!

Now, time for myself to answer here!
If you could have looked at my blog, it clearly says that the data is indeed coming from Daves PDA place. I took the photos from there, but thought of the text and interpreted the data(the Zire 72 similarities) on my own!
I have mentioned the proper source in my blog, and am sorry for any inconviniences..
Please mail me if there are furhter questions remaining!

No problem. I didn't get to your site, obviously.

RE: Is he stealing credit?

Tam - You aren't in the wrong here. PIC is. While they can of course link you to you, they site you as being the source of the information from the FCC, which is not the case. Tam you have journalistic integrity, but PIC seems to not care to go the extra step to find a source.
RE: Is he stealing credit?
Tamog @ 1/10/2005 3:55:02 PM # Q
Hi,
IMHO PIC isn't wrong here either! DavesPDA sourced the Images, but I did all the interpretation by myself!
PIC doesn't always choose the raw unfiltered data, but chose to send some interpretastion with it. I think that both TamsPalm and the PIC have no journalistic disintegrity, and refuse to accept any such claims about either my blog or the PIC.
Best regards
Tam Hanna

To Late, TE2 was already released....

bsquare @ 1/6/2005 3:27:48 PM # Q

Back in October 2004...

Seriously, after the T5 does anyone even care what palmOne has up their short sleeve anymore? I'm sorry, yes, Treo users care. That's about it.

RE: To Late, TE2 was already released....
mtt @ 1/6/2005 4:52:35 PM # Q
Yup,the only thing anybody really cares about is the new Treos. Palmone is dead as far as an innovative maker of interesting devices.

By the way, what is the next Treo gonna be like?

Handspring Visor, Palm V, Treo 180, Treo 90

Déjà vu all over again...

Captain Hair @ 1/6/2005 3:25:11 PM # Q
You know, that looks mysteriously like the T5. Also, wouldn't it be the Tungsten E2 (as opposed to Tungsten TE2)? But I did notice that it has a multi-connector instead of the mini-USB that the TE had. Overall, it looks rather familiar. I think that this design may have been beat into the digital ground, with the T5. Damn, I can't call that the TE2 anymore.

I've always called the T5 ... T3b, as opposed to the T3a. Unlike the numbering scheme going from T3 to T5, the T5 is really a sidegrade and not an upgrade.

Basically the E with new connector and Bluetooth.

JonAcheson @ 1/6/2005 4:44:40 PM # Q
I don't see myself upgrading from the E I have, but on the other hand, it's nice to see some incremental upgrades.

And all the people complaining about the E not having Bluetooth will finally be happy. Maybe.

canyonblue737 @ 1/9/2005 1:16:30 PM # Q
well it has:

1. bluetooth
2. new battery failure proof memory
3. 18 bit screen instead of 16 bit

i am guessing it all has:

4. a faster processor
5. more memory

still it is unwhelming. the whole PDA scene, it particular from PalmOne is just so blah.

Y an 18 bit screen?
ackmondual @ 1/9/2005 3:26:45 PM # Q
who and how many apps are really going to make good use of the 18 bit screen at 262,144 colors?

One thing I thought of that would be a nice addition is the USB flash drive functionality they put on the T5. Particularly if you can move files to the SD card that way. It would be handy for loading up MP3s.

Lack of PDA Personality

vesther @ 1/6/2005 5:48:09 PM # Q
I don't know if it's me or if it's palmOne being lazy about the design of each handheld, but I felt that palmOne is being a bit too lazy here because while I applaud the Tungsten E2 for having Bluetooth 1.1 compliance and the Multi-Connector, I do have to scold palmOne for not giving the Tungsten T5 some sort of personality traits, I felt that the Tungsten E2 has a little bit of personality but the Tungsten T5 IMO lacks originality--At least the Tungsten T5 should've had its own body rather than a plastickey Tungsten E-derived body.

Anyway, I can't rank the Tungsten T5 over the Tungsten E or E2 or Zire 72 because of its lack of design originality. The Tungsten T5 should've borrowed the body of the old-school Palm m515 instead IMO.

Powered by Palm OS since March 2002

RE: Lack of PDA Personality
HiWire @ 1/6/2005 8:29:10 PM # Q
True, the m515 was a design "high point" in my opinion, although it should have come out initially, not following the m505. I wouldn't have a problem with something similar to the m515, maybe a little thinner and lighter, with state-of-the-art hardware inside. I hope PalmOne doesn't ever repeat the mistake of grounding the motherboard to the case again.

Having seen the plastic body of the T5 and quite liking it (though i prefer the metal body of my T3).
I think palm should have used the same T5 plastic body styling/colour on this new TE2.

I dislike the cheap shiny looking body styling of my girlfriend's TE which ironically probably costs more than T5 body styling.

Ok, I am only going to say this here since it is quite buried, and if there are any questions then you can email me and ask. palmOne is beign cautiously agressive and though this will not have "personality" as you say, it will make mobile phone operators stand up. Spoke to a few high ups at palmOne while at CES and all they would say to me is pay attention to what they have done in the past. At that, I pretty much can tell you that there will be at least 512mb on the flagship palmOne PDA; and that the Zire line gets a T5 like device with a better (probably not higher mpx) camera. At the risk of sounding off any more, I will say to you what I was told, ask and you may get what you asked for.
