Rumor: Cingular Treo 650 Release Soon

TreoCentral is reporting that palmOne has sent out and email newsletter that hints that the palmOne Treo 650 smartphone will be released within weeks.

The rumor comes from an email announcement from palmOne to their HealthCare Solutions newsletter.

TreoCentral states:

The email is announcing a "Webinar for Healthcare Providers and Health Systems Management" labeled "The Next Generation of Mobile Healthcare, featuring the Treo 650 Smartphone from palmOne" and is co-sponsored by PatientKeeper and Cingular Wireless. The event is on January the 27th.
It has been rumored that that the Cingular release will be on Wednesday January 26th, a little less than two weeks from today.

Let'see, the 650 was announced in October '04, and now the GSM model arrives? Damn Sprint and their exclusive contract!

I can't wait to dump my T5 on ebay and get a 650.

Hengeem, Treocentral moderators have always been a bunch of hypocritical, sleazy individuals. I found the fact that they finally banned your a$$ quite amusing. It's interesting how they have no qualms about promoting the unlocking of Treos, enabling of Bluetooth, ROM hacking, Wi-Fi hacking + other illegal activities but can't handle anyone pointing out lies people regularly post there. Michael Ducker (Miradu) was merely one of the most dimwitted of theTreocentral Gang. He will always live on in our hearts. Bless 'im!

In general I have no problems with TreoCentral's moderators - though miradu was fairly slow to "produce" (he's something like 18 and very much in school) I thought he was fair and even-handed.

The total silence about his disappearance from TreoCentral's marcus, however, is very interesting. That plus the fact that the TREO 650 "review" TreoCentral published was NOT written by miradu (and the fact that the PREVIOUS review he had done was never published!) tells this paranoid person that perhaps he had a fallout with marcus OVER the TREO 650 "review"...

Personally, I find TreoCentral to be a decreasing-in-value source of information (thus my known-result taunt at ToolKit, the heavy-handed too-much-power-volunteer). I think it is a shame that TreoCentral rather than its forum posters gets so much credit for news breaks when TreoCentral itself RARELY publishes anything!

Would like to know miradu's story, though, eh?

VoR, it should be noted that unlocking a phone is not illegal, nor is enabling Bluetooth. Making a custom ROM may be, at most, a violation of licensing, as is the WiFi driver.

Reverse engineering code, altering that code and then posting the altered code so that others may bypass carrier-mandated limitations is not permitted.

Unlocking a phone doesn't constitute reverse-engineering. Similarly, you'd be hard pressed to prove that activating the DUN profile constituted a reverse engineering under any legal definition. The WiFi drivers and custom ROMs do qualify as reverse engineering, which is why they're technically a violation of the licensing agreement.

I'm just waiting for Verizon to Release the Treo 650 so I can get myself one. It took months with the online petition for them to finally get on the Treo bandwagon. Hopefully it won't take an eternity for them to update services for the Treo 650. Verizon is the only provider that works well in most areas for me.
C'mon guys lets go!

I'll tell you what, based on what's available right now, I might actually consider a 650 if it comes to Verizon.

I'm not looking forward to the lower screen resolution than my TH55, but when am I realistically going to see that in a smart phone that I want?

Will the 650 do G1?

Luckily there is time for the weaknesses, fixes and hacks to percolate out so that by the time this happens, settling into operation on one might not be too bad.

I guess we'll see...

Verizon is not gonna have the Treo 650 released up until at least Third Quarter 2005 since like palmOne admitted, Verizon has the most stringent equipment testing processes in the Cell Phone Industry. Verizon made two mistakes (Two Motorola Phones, looks like Verizon might decide to put a halt to providing Motorola Phones) by letting two untested phones "sneak in" without Verizon's seal of approval, and I doubt that any phone entering after the Motorola V710 incident will be able to make it through the Verizon Wireless Network without being rigorously tested by Verizon's Equipment Team and without Verizon's seal of approval.

Oh, Verizon sold the Motorola V710 without invoking their super-ardulous testing procedure at Motorola's request (Motorola assumed and/or assured Verizon that the V710 was ready to be deployed for Verizon), but apparently, the stock had to be recalled at Verizon's command because Verizon later on found some defects and/or after-release issues with the V710 and Verizon pulled the V710 off the shelves in order to get the problem resolved. The recall happened back on the T720 days and it happened again on the V710 days--That is why Verizon is seeking not to hurry any equipment up (especially the Treo 650) and a lot of equipment end up being released overly late due to Verizon's really tight equipment quality testing standards.

Actually, Verizon very much tested the v710, and let it through as it was. So much for their insanely slow approval at least being thorough.

I've personally had a V710 since it launched in August or so and I have to admit that while it's a good phone from an RF standpoint, it leaves a lot to be desired in several smaller but important areas. In many ways, it mimics the disappointments on recent Tungsten P1 models.

Verizon insists on handicapping the Bluetooth, for starters. The camera is absolute junk and the battery life is distressingly short. Build quality is ok but not up to the levels of previous Moto products. The screen is good but tends to scratch easily (as does the case).

Overall, I am willing to live with the phone b/c it's the only Verizon model with BT, the screen is large & bright, the speakerphone rocks and the RF reception and analog peformance are the best that I've ever used on any phone anywhere.

On a related note, I've spoken with three execs lately who gave up waiting for the Treo 650 on Verizon and went with a PPC Smartphone or a Blackberry. It seems that Verizon's stringest testing procedures are just an excuse to be lazy as most of the bugs with the V710 (BT aside) were Moto's fault and not Verizon's. Sounds familiar, huh? And yes, from everyone I've talked to, Verizon is probably droppping Moto phones after the next quarter due to the V710 "issue". That's why they are dragging their feet so much on the much-needed software update.

Everyone in my office has held off making the jump from their ATTWS accounts - waiting on the 650. No, really, quite a few folks here. We were concerned about moving our accounts over and getting any phone to hold us over then not being able to 'upgrade'. And/or missing out on some 'new signup' discount on the 650. A few have folded here and went with Cingular flip phones.
I wonder how much of an impact the release of the 650 will have on Cingular. Most likely not a lot of change overs like we are (yea, ATTWS and Cingular are now the same company but they offer different services with their subscriptions) but will there be new service signups that are from folks not wanting to go with Sprint. Time will tell.
