Pocket Tunes v4.07 for Palm OS Released
Despite recently releasing a version of Pocket Tunes for Windows Mobile-powered devices, NormSoft has not forgotten their loyal Palm OS user base. A new version of the Pocket Tunes audio player app has been released by Normsoft for all Palm OS Garnet devices.
Pocket Tunes Deluxe sells for $37.95 and a free trial is available. A basic version is also available for $19.95, which omits the support for online music stores. You can read my earlier review of Pocket Tunes 4 here.
The new version, v4.0.7, is dated May 30th 6, 2008. Normsoft's changelog lists only bugfixes related to this latest version of the program.
The full list of changes is detailed below:
- Bug fix: Turn on backup bit for pTunes program so it gets backed up by\ default during a HotSync (#4807)
- Bug fix: Improve updating from in-ROM versions (#5027)
- Bug fix: Fix parsing of Genre tags from some MP3 files (#4938)
- Bug fix: Change resource IDs to prevent rare crash on Centro (#5224)

RE: Wow...
Instead, we have the removal of 3.5mm headphone jacks (not seen since the TX), the removal of any onboard storage memory (not seen in flash form since the T5; the LD's microdrive was so poorly implemented that I'm not even going to count that), the loss of 320x480 screens (also not seen since the TX) and 320x320 screens of constantly shrinking size (PDA 320x320->Treo 320x320->Centro 320x320) and the move to costlier, more fragile, less capacious, less compatible, and harder to insert/remove memory card formats (Fullsize SD/SDHC to miniSD to microSD) and still no "official" BT A2DP implementation despite the workarounds offered by Softick and the actual Palm hardware being up to par (in addition to the above comments about no official support for >4GB file volumes).
Palm's downsizing & feature removal is directly opposite of where the rest of the industry is going (well, aside from microSD-everyone's at fault for that debacle).

UNLESS... the "2" implied 240x240 or 2"x2" as Palm continues the incredible shrinking screen theme. But if they could do it right, a TX2 would make me one VERY happy camper!

but someone (Colligan) decided to axe it and go all-smartphone/Fooleo.
smartphone... yeah, dumb move... definitely, retarded CEO absolutely.

If this were 2005, I would agree. In 2008, it's going to take more than that.
To make me a VERY happy camper in 2008/2009, I want
- absolutely no less than 320X480 resolution.
- hardware accelerated graphics
- 802.11*n*
- fast RAM, gigs of internal storage and a storage expansion slot
- a2dp for wireless stereo audio
- full featured, multitasking OS
- browser equal to or better than Safari on iPhone
- ipod/iphone compatible connector so I can use the thousands of chargers/docks/radios for ipod
- Thinner than iPhone

It seems obvious to me that the direction that Colligan wanted to go with the Foleo (and could still go, if they follow through on the Foleo II) was a big screen, full keyboard device interface for a smartphone, thereby letting people have smartphones, which are viable in the market) with big screens and keyboards for those that wanted them. I think what they got wrong is they made it too much like a laptop, and priced it accordingly. If they marketed it as a keyboard/screen interface for your phone, and priced it in line with that (say, $150-$200 US) they'd have a better shot at making a good device. Instead, in the Foleo created a neutered sub-notebook. I hope they get it right next time around (if there is a next time).

When my TX died recently, I got a Treo 755p, but I would have purchased a Palm PDA if they had something that was competitive with the iPod Touch or Nokia n810 in terms of hardware and browser capability.

Remember, I'm egotistically always going back to N years ago when I said I wanted a "component system" of mix-n-match devices all mutually communicating (when near):

RE: Can any news regarding Palm be positive on this site?
Smaller modules with a standard interface and multiple ports would have been sweet. Unfortunately the technology back then couldn't deliver.

The decreasing PDA market was a self-fulfilling prediction. There is no reason to buy a new PDA when they never come out with new, upgraded ones.
I've heard that rationale before, but I don't think it holds water. The TX came out after the PDA decline started. And it wasn't just Palm who wasn't having any success. Everyone was feeling the pinch.
Are there still people who would buy a PDA? Sure. But the question to ask is, are there enough people willing to buy one to justify producing it? There are people who still buy vinyl LPs, but record companies don't produce a vinyl record for every act, either.
It should be noted that the iPod Touch isn't a PDA in any true sense of the word, and probably never will be, the way Apple has it locked down. People don't drool all over themselves for the PDA capabilities of the Touch. They like it because it's a media powerhouse. I think it's a mistake to point to the iPod Touch as evidence that people want a PDA-style device again. That's not why people buy it.
RE: Can any news regarding Palm be positive on this site?
The biggest problem I see with the PDA though is that everyone uses their PDA different and none of these companies seemed to understand the end users needs. Looking back I think they should have made models aimed for the different types of end users. For example, the Business User, the Media Centric user, the Datebook/Notepad User, the Gamer. I think this is what Steve Jobs understands with the iPod and iPhone devices. They excel in what they are suppose to do but are capable of doing more.

It doesn't seem to me that Palm even considered that fact. The predicted a demise and did everything to make it come true. But there are enough people buying replacement devices to contribute to $36.7 million in revenue.
The TX came out after the PDA decline started. And it wasn't just Palm who wasn't having any success. Everyone was feeling the pinch.
If the TX didn't sell well, it would be odd to find the TX users on a list of people buying a lot of software for PalmOS. After all the number of units sold would depend on number of TXs out there wouldn't it? http://www.handango.com/marketing/Yardstick/2007_YE_Palm.pdf
RE: Can any news regarding Palm be positive on this site?
Super list! Thanks for linking to it. When was that released? I'm surprised we haven't seen anyone trot out those numbers before.
I'm not surprised at all to see the TX at number 2. However, the 650 is a surprise, as that device has such a pitiful amount of main memory that I'd think people would be less likely to add apps to it (I guess everyone's running stuff off of SD cards).
I'm also surprised to see the LD & Z22 on there as high on the "by revenue" list as they are. I'm also surprised that the T3 wasn't on the list and that the new-ish 755p cracked the list. You'd think the T3, with its still-strong specs & fanbase would have made the cut.
I'm also surprised that the list is devoid (relatively) of games! I'd have thought Bejeweled 2 would be higher...and SkyForce (a cool but niche sort of title) is even in there!

Palm Announces Graffiti Classic Free Download For All Devices Stuck With Graffiti 2.
That'd be a *great* start.
It'd be even better if it ACTUALLY WORKED!
See, there's always a catch with Palm.
RE: Can any news regarding Palm be positive on this site?
Eh. Come back end of June and see if you need to revise that.

Those are just the numbers for Handango for 2007. I can't remember where I read about it, but it was recent. So I just went to their site and searched.
However, the 650 is a surprise, as that device has such a pitiful amount of main memory that I'd think people would be less likely to add apps to it
Actually I converted a few people who went from dumbphones to the 650 just to run one piece of software that I was running on my TX (actually Palm V followed by Visor Edge before the TX). It was cricket scoring software (not the darts cricket) that was much better than doing it on paper. The developer sold it through PalmGear.
I used to score the games for a club team and they rushed out to get some more copies to enable the second and third teams. Also they needed something once I quit the club. I know at least 6 people in the club had the software and devices to run them on when I left years ago (2x Treo 650 + some other devices).
I'm also surprised that the T3 wasn't on the list
Again those are just the numbers for Handango for 2007. They have numbers for 2006 & 2005 as well.
