Possible Sprint Treo 800w Release Date
Rumor: WMExperts claims to have obtained what is the likely release date for the next Palm Treo smartphone due on Sprint, presumably called the Treo 800w. The site claims Tuesday, July 22nd as the tentative date, which would largely be in line with the leaked Sprint roadmap and recent comments from Palm.
The Treo 800w (also code-named Zeppelin) is expected to debut running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional (Pocket PC edition) with a 320x320 pixel touchscreen display. It is also expected to be Palm's first smartphone that includes Wi-Fi as well at GPS functionality and its first EVDO Rev.A device of any kind.
Update: The Treo 800w has been released on Sprint. You can read our Palm Treo 800w review here.
WMExperts also says they have confirmed some additional details on the unit:
- EvDO Rev A
- 256/128 MB Memory
- Autonomous GPS
- Windows Mobile 6.1
- An official color designation of Charcoal Black
In late April Palm began sending out "Beta Test Invites" for am unnamed new device. The invitation specified the need for Sprint customers that are heavy smartphone/email users and that also have access to a WiFi Router. The first legitimate picture leaks of this supposed device first came during Bill Gate's keynote presentation at CES 2008.

I'm not interested in WM, so I guess I'm holding on (Treo 680) to the faint hope that Plinux will actually be finished, function, be accepted, pass carrier testing, and actually ship. That's pretty thin ice I know. But, if it collapses I'll throw in the towel and probably go RIM, unless the iPhone platform opens the door to serious development. C'mon Palm, execute this year.

The only part of this that's mildly interesting is the autonomous GPS, but a Bluetooth GPS receiver and Mapopolis take care of that. Add that to the $99 for the Centro, and you're still paying less than this is going to cost you.
As for the EVDO and the memory:
I've surfed before with 3G speeds. It's only moderately less painful. And the memory is a non-issue for me. A decent-sized micro-SD card isn't that expensive.
Now, if the cost of this thing is sub-$300, that's potentially a different story. But I highly doubt that, since that's what a Treo 700w is going for right now.
RE: Palm back on top
If you hated it before, most likely you'll hate it now... Only maybe a bit less. It astonishing how Microsoft has neglected WM for so many years, giving it nothing but the slightest touch ups. The most irksome and glaring defects in ancient releases of Pocket PC are still there, edition after edition, as does the general ugliness.
Though I strongly believe WM sucks, you can really live with it - I happily do - if you give it some care and install some additional software, and learn not to hate its defects.
And don't you worry or buy into iP or S60, because really, really soon now, and after only 10 years of standing still, Microsoft is going to whip WM7 out of its Pocket, and it is going to be very, very, good.

Aside from those, and the usual concerns of Palm's quality control etc, it looks to be a very solid device spec-wise.
While it's certainly possible that Nova (assuming it even exists, which is something I am growing increasingly skeptical of daily) will launch on a version of this hardware, I'm expecting something more along the lines of an EVDO Rev.A Centro to debut Nova? Why? Lower end hardware brings lower expectations and intentionally omiting wi-fi, GPS etc. makes Palm's job by easier with fewer drivers to write.
Remember, Palm always takes the path of least resistance. Just look at the Centro, Fooleo etc.

And the 3G iPhone steals the thunder?
Anyway I wonder if Palm hasn't already tested the Nova/PalmOSII on this thing?
