Rumor: Bogus palmOne Tungsten T6/2005 Specs?
A list of very sketchy specifications of a new Tungsten T6 or Tungsten 2005 have been posted to an internet newsgroup. Without any backup information the specs appear very dubious.
The source of the rumors comes from a single posting on the low volume newsgroup alt.comp.os.palm. The poster claims to have received an "inofficial" (sic) announcement and claims the model should have a list of unlikely features.
Since PalmInfocenter can not find any information past or present to provide any slight chance of confirmation, we recommend to take these rumors as they are. Even the own author of the message does not have confirmation of any of the features.
Thanks to Rich and PalmAddicts for the tip.

Ethernet connector? I can't imaging how an RJ port could ever fit on a PDA. And Windows compatibility? Let the lawsuits begin then, hehe.
pen & paper -> m515 -> Zire72 -> TH55 & Handera 330
RE: Wishful thinking I'd say
We'll have a rehashed T|E2 that will be almost identical to the rumored specs and a revised Zire 73 that might be a surprisingly decent handheld of the midrange set. That's it. Nothing else new this spring and the chances of a midsummer-style T2 release look increasingly unlikely.

pure fantasy and fiction. it will never happen. look for a lame TE/2 and Zire and that's it. unfortunately, that's all palm is capable of at this point. warmed-over rehash with NVFS. the days of exciting new products from palm are over.

Don't be so positive. You're listening to those Tony Robbins tapes too much.

Eat your heart-out :-D.. Most of the important rumours about the upcoming ("real" sibling of) a tungsten are true..

Hey Gekko!
Excuse me, I'm just off to emigrate from the hordes of angry T5 owners who can't take a joke...
RE: Don't get fooled again
"Can anybody confirm this features?"
Personally, I'd just be happy with a T5 that also had WiFi, OS 6 and a little more RAM (as long as it syncs with the Mac).
Just logical conjecture
Finally, a forum where common sense prevails!
What surprised me even more is that everywhere I looked, most readers seemed to be taking them seriously (Awesome specs! I knew PalmOne would come through for us!)
Finally, though, I've found a Palm site, PIC, where the only reason the story is on the front page is to highlight the fact that so many others are taking this early April Fools joke seriously. And finally, here at PIC, forum posters have the sense to dismiss these ridiculous specs right off the bat.

A new T|E2 and a new palmOne device called 'Life Drive'.

RE: Finally, a forum where common sense prevails!
The date sounds about right from the last few springs. Release date and then sell about 2 weeks later.
TE2 - yup
Life Drive - interesting idea, besides a ton of space, camera, and wireless, I wonder what it could be. Maybe a tablet palmOS device?

You know, a nifty moniker that can lure the soccer moms in to buy the latest camera-equipped Zire. "Store all of your life's precious moments on the Zire 73's capacious LifeDrive"
Probably also catching some residual fell-good vibes from Apple's iLife media suite as well.
Sorrry for being so dang cynical but does anyone blame me based on events of the past, oh, 4 years or so?
Also, can SOMEONE with a "source" for their rumors be a bit less vague--ie mention if it's a retailer, a developer, a mole from withing P1 etc etc ?
RE: Finally, a forum where common sense prevails!
What would be sweet: a device similar in form to the flash-storage mini camcorders they have out now, with a flip-and-rotate screen, 2-3 MP camera with zoom, headphone jack and a big battery.
Software bundle would include an MP3 player, movie player, and an improved desktop app that can sync up music and movies.
No phone, and no keyboard.

RE: Finally, a forum where common sense prevails!
I don't believe that will be the actual product's name. It simply doesn't fit in palmOne's naming of sub-brands: Zire - Tungsten - (Treo - ) Life Drive. Inf the item that doesn't belong to this group...
In my opinion, "Coltan" (which was also rumored to be the name of new palmOne devices) sounds much more reasonable.
So What?
Why waste your resources on anything but a smart phone at this point? The technology industry is not supposed to be about clinging to old, outdated products and ideas.
Memo to PalmOne: You license the perfect OS for it, now go dominate the next frontier of mobile technology. The Treo is great, but don't repeat the mistake of the Palm V and sit on your laurels.
RE: So What?
Sarcasm aside... maybe it's because PDAs serve a need and fill niche that smartphones do not? Maybe because the features often wanted in a cell phone and a PDA differ enough for enough people and actually CONFLICT and are directly OPPOSITE? Maybe because there are so many people like myself for whom a smartphone is therefore not a solution and not something I will buy?
I need my cellphone to be as small as possible, with a screen only big enough to show names and phone numbers. My PDA needs a screen large enough to display huge amounts of data, games, pictures, etc. A PDA with the screen size of my cell phone would be unusable. A cell phone the size of my PDA would look idiotic held to my ear.
I loan out my cell phone to people sometimes for a bit. I don't loan out my PDA.
I often go places where I want to leave my PDA behind for safety. But I'll bring my cell phone.
My PDA needs things like a touchscreen, stylus, and other features that are wasted space on my cell phone.
My cell phone gets abused much more than my PDA. It's considered much more of an "expendable" device.
Just because 2 devices both have a screen and a battery and often both hold namess and phone numbers doesn't mean they should be combined. Just because you CAN do something doesn't me you SHOULD and that it's right for EVERYONE.
I don't think it's unreasonable to want there to be SOME manufacturer still producing a QUALITY PDA-only device ("quality" implies not running any incarnation of Windows).

RE: So What?
Because smartphones are a miniscule portion of the market, are far behind classic handhelds technologically, aren't growing much as a a market, and don't sell to the majority of users. The vast majority of sales are not smartphones. The people who buy PDAs generally wouldn't buy smartphones if ordinary handhelds weren't available.
sremick: Well said.

Press release: CUPERTINO, California — February 11, 2005 — Apple® announced today that Steve Jobs will begin selling his own feces to Apple Cultists beginning March 1. Apple's new iPoo™ lineup is expected to easily surpass the iPod shuffle as the company's most popular product. Yes, Apple Cultists can already easily create their own iPoo™, but feces didn't seem cool until Jobs told them it was cool. Remember, kids: the ONLY cool feces is Jobs' highly individualistic, rebellious iPoo™ (coming soon in six different colors/flavors, including the red [hematochezia] and black [melena] U2 GI bleed model)

Sony CLIE UX100: 128 MB real RAM, OLED screen. All the PDA anyone really ever wanted.
RE: So What?
IMHO smartphones aren't really 'replacing' PDAs. I believe that most actual smartphone buyers (please note I said MOST of them, not ALL of them) fall in one of these categories:
- people who never really needed a fully featured PDA in the first place (I agree that a smartphone may be just fine for many people who just need basic agenda/phonebook functions and/or WAP browsing and/or 'vertical' solutions as offered by their telco);
- people who want a high-end cellphone that just happens to be a smartphone.
Batteries are still a big issue. I own a cellphone and a PDA, and the cellphone battery choses to die on me at the less appropriate time. Now, I *can* survive without the cellphone working (expecially because my main phonebook is inside the PDA). On the other hand, being unable to access data on the PDA would be a major annoyance... (I vaguely remember one of the very first PDAs with built-in GSM - maybe from Telit? - having TWO betteries, a separate one for the GSM function - and, yes, it was a brick IIRC)
Whether you go for a smartphone or two separate devices, a hands-free headset is a must (so you can use the PDA while talking at the phone)
And, as a Star Trek fan, I haven't seen yet a Starfleet officer with an all-in-one communicator/datapad ;-)

RE: So What?
Expected price if it appears: $3000 after carrier subsidies.
The ideal smartphone for palm os: 126mhz OMAP, 32mb nvfs ram, dual band cdma or gsm, vga camera, sd expansion slot, 160*160 4k display, number pad, bundled photo editing, email, and music player apps, available as both clamshell and candybar in a fairly small device with average battery life.
Expected price when (and it should) appear: $100-$150 after carrier subsidies.
Which would you buy?
Sharp Wizard-->Handspring Visor "Deluxe"-->Sony Clie SJ30-->Palm Tungsten T3 w/ SE T68i
Rumors are good
P.S. Still using my T3--Palm's last, greatest PDA.
