I once counted (this was probably 1.5 to 2 years ago or so!) and well over 1/2 of the Palm OS apps/games I had bought since 2001 or so ended up abandoned and/or disappeared entirely. I have games on my computer that I purchased in 1996 for Win95 that STILL run decently under Vista. Yet why is an app from 2003 that I bought for my T2 or T3 not running (or runs with issues) today on my TX or 700p?

And there are still plenty of developers/software stores charging premium prices for stuff that predates NVFS and the newer Treos where there's no way to exit the program short of resetting your device!

I can think of several games that I personally own that exhibit this behavior. Part of this is Palm's fault, part of this is the developer's fault, part of this is the publisher/seller's fault for claiming compatibility and part of it can arguably be the customer's fault for expecting too much. And by upgrading to Vista on my PC I know I've lost any hope of the conduits of many Palm OS apps ever working properly again...

At any rate, I'm almost glad to see the POS market imploding. In many ways, an entirely fresh start under the next-gen OS might not be such a bad idea after all.

Like I've said a bunch of times, the much touted, so-called Palm Economy is a farce. Everybody wants $20-30 for their little utility that provides some piece of functionality that should probably have come with the phone in the first place. It would cost me hundreds of dollars to turn my 680 into the phone it should be, feature-wise.

I mean, ~$40 for an MP3 player? Really?

Palm got off to a bad, bad start back in the OS 5.0 Tungsten T days by using SUCH lame quality audio hardware and the feeble RealPlayer on the T|T. Back when Mp3 players were still basically a novelty, Palm could (and SHOULD) have played the T|T and its brethren up as PDA/PMP hybrid solutions. By the time PTunes and AeroPlayer got in gear and were stable and Palm got their volume/audio quality issues sorted out on the T3, the iPod started making its presence known.

One of the major attractions back in '02/'03 when most digital cameras still had pitiful 1.5" or 1.8" LCDs was being able to pop out your SD card, insert it into your Tungsten and view your camera photos in fullscreen mode.

Palm should have realized 6 years ago that they were underutilizing the capabilities of their own handhelds and focused on having a solid, all-in-one photo/music/video playing media app bundled with every OS 5.x device. While I love PTunes, MobiTV, Kinoma, SplashPhoto, and CorePlayer, (and tolerate Palm's Photo/camera apps), it irks me having to hop from one app to the next (all occupying precious RAM space) in order to switch between photos, videos, mp3s, and streaming media. Of course, each app has its inherent strengths and core capabilities and I am reluctant to try to make do with, say, just 1 or 2 of the above programs.

Kudos to Tim & Normsoft for their good customer service, regularly released updates, and commitment to the Palm OS. I also love the integrated automatic version checker/download built into PTunes! Now if we could JUST get Normsoft to somehow convince Palm to incorporate a proper stereo 3.5mm headphone jack on the next Treo...
