AutoPilot Converts TiVo to Palm Format

TVHarmony has released an update to its AutoPilot application. The program can now automatically convert TiVo recorded videos to a format compatible with Palm OS devices.

TiVo to Palm OS SoftwareAutoPilot automatically transfers, converts and stores your TiVo shows. You can select shows or series to be transfered automatically, and you can even schedule the program to work in the night while your computer is idle. It also keeps track of what you already downloaded, making it east to transfer a whole series without duplicates.

The software is freeware and is available for Windows 2000/XP. The package requires a networked TiVo with TiVo Desktop & TiVoToGo installed. It can create video for Palm OS devices and played back with a video program such as TCPMP.

Thanks to PVRWire for the tip.

Now if there was just something good to watch. Not that I'd know. Haven't watched TV in almost 4 years.

tv worth watching

Other than blankly switching between the 24hr cable news networks, I like "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart", and "The Colbert Report"

However, the problem is who has the free time to watch tv away from home? If you're employed, there isn't time. Next to work, going to the gym is important and they've got plenty of tv's there. Can't legally watch tv while driving to and from work. Wait times at the store are less due to "self checkout lanes".

I'm even getting bored with watching natural disaster coverage.

HEY ACCESS, NEWS FLASH... you want to revive the palm economy, indicate that a new version of palmOS will be out within 6 months (true or not, this would spark interest - look what vaporware has done for microsoft as they wait for inspiration from apple and others) HEY PALM, THIS JUST IN... come out with a slimmer sleeker Tungsten C with a nice treo 90'ish style thumbpad, all the wireless guts, and a "PALM MEDIA PLAYER" that can play everything windows media player 10 can play and more.
Why does Palm have to act like a beached whale all the time waiting for us to give them ideas. What do they do all day long in their ivory tower?

If this freeware beta works, it's a slick way for the tech-savvy to get video onto their PDAs.

For the past 2 years, I've used a Sony VR100K Memory Stick recorder for an even simpler solution, but then again, that device cost $300 when it came out and is now impossible to find (except periodically on eBay).

It'amazing to see the inventiveness of PalmOS programmers. Even more amazing is how people like Picard (TCPMP programmer) give many of these apps away for free.

I'll try this just so I don't have to use my creative zen brick gift from last Xmas. Tivo to go worked on media player 10 first. More batt power on the Zen, more wow factor on the Zod.

The "tech-savvy" already just convert the .tivo files to Xvid using some freeware app or Pocket DVD Studio and watch them in TCPMP.

As one of the "tech-savvy" I've been converting Window Media Center recordings to XviD using some freeware tools and watching them TCPMP for a while.

Currently, converting + loading a video onto a portable device requires so many steps/so many obscure apps that only an ubergeek would do it. For the average Joe, it's simply not worth the pain.

We need an app that has iTunes-like simplicity that can deal with converting + loading video files. I prefer hardware solutions like the Sony VR100K, but wish there were more options regarding output quality + formats. My VZ90 with a Bluetooth adapter, OLED screen, CompactFlash and Memory Stick slots is oh-so-close to perfection. The VR100K + CLIE VZ90 + TCPMP = PDA as portable TV. This is the kind of application (along with built-in, always-on wireless) that could/should have put PDAs into the hands of EVERYONE by now. So much wasted potential. I really thought either Palm or Sony would have come up with a device + software that could do it all.

Did you REALLY expect Palm to get it right, Voice?

I mean, really....they cannot even get a device that works properly with the tricky combination of wi-fi/Bluetooth/simultaneous button presses.

They've never shown a knack for being media-savvy about anything--and bundling a pair of headphones + PocketDVD Studio with the LifeDrive isn't going to change matters (but it's a baby step in the right direction at least).

If Sony couldn't do it then no one can/will. Tapave made the fatal error of trying to take on the GameBoy/DS/PSP juggernauts by focusing on games. Instead, Tapwave should have tried to be the Audi to Palm's VW...and focusing on media early on (dual SD slots!) would have been the ticket.

Also, Voice, is that VR100K recorder limited to 1gb Memory Sticks or can it go higher? And does it work on standard speed MS or does it need/like Pro cards?

No. Sony's next generation of devices was going to be KILLER. The rumored OLED UX would have been the perfect PDA in my opinion. And imagine a CLIE with a built-in cellphone radio. The irony is that all the parts were available and all the hard R + D work had already been done. All that remained was optimizing the specs of the UX, TH and VZ lineup.

I mean, really....they cannot even get a device that works properly with the tricky combination of wi-fi/Bluetooth/simultaneous button presses.

Palm was too cheap/lazy to sell quality hardware and then when Sony left they had no one to push them. Why is it that a 2 year old CLIE is exponentially better than a brand new top of the line Palm?

They've never shown a knack for being media-savvy about anything--and bundling a pair of headphones + PocketDVD Studio with the LifeDrive isn't going to change matters (but it's a baby step in the right direction at least).

I've posted before that Palm needs to license + bundle a cohesive set of applications that are the best within each app niche. Palm's laziness/arrogance is truly incredible. No included backup app??? W T F???

If Sony couldn't do it then no one can/will. Tapave made the fatal error of trying to take on the GameBoy/DS/PSP juggernauts by focusing on games. Instead, Tapwave should have tried to be the Audi to Palm's VW...and focusing on media early on (dual SD slots!) would have been the ticket.

Had Tapwave made a dual slot TH55 clone with the Zodiac 2 specs they would probably still be in business.

Also, Voice, is that VR100K recorder limited to 1gb Memory Sticks or can it go higher? And does it work on standard speed MS or does it need/like Pro cards?

I only have 1 GB Memory Sticks, but I see no reason why the VR100K can't handle higher capacities. Older CLIEs can now handle storage cards over 2 GB now that the Life Drive's FAT32 drivers were "borrowed".

I believe any Memory Stick should work:

http://www.ottaky.com/sticks.php

If you ever luck out and find a new European TH55 ($600 +), or if you lay out the cash for a VZ90 ($900 - $1100!), definitely get a VR100K off eBay if you can find one. Unfortunately, the supply of Euro TH55 and VR100K appears to have dried up in the past few months. Even my bunker supply has been depleted (looted?) by friends + family desperate for some old fashioned, creamy CLIE Goodness. Like Beersy, I'm not exactly a big TV fan (but unlike Beersy, I don't feel the need to wear a T-shirt that advertises this). Still, it's tres cool being able to "tape" (or should I say "Stick"?) a week of Buffy or Avengers reruns and watch them on my VZ90 when stuck at an airport. Also very convenient when the dumba$$ sitting in front of you in Economy whips their seat back so far you can't even open up your subnotebook.
