Voice Command Impressions

Admin @ 2/23/2006 1:10:34 PM # Q
I really like this app so far.

This is how it works... first you select and app to create a command for, then you record the command, that will set it up to launch an app by your voice. You have to assign a button that will invoke the listener and put it into action mode. After you record a command you can also record macros in the app, such as fetching email or creating a new datebook entry with your own predetermined message.

This really is nothing new though. I remember a very similar app way back in 1998 on Philips Nino handhelds that worked almost identically to what you describe.

You realize that the Treo 700w comes with Voice Command in ROM and it allows you to say things like "Call Jeff Smith on Mobile" and it finds Jeff Smith and the pulls the number from his cell or mobile field and dial, all without having to record anything? It works for launching apps, telling you the battery level, signal strength, reading off today's appointments, etc., and you never record a thing. You just have to learn a few commands. Demo at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/voicecommand/default.mspx

Seems strange someone would be developing something today for PalmOS that still relied on having to record commands.

Ed - How do you invoke Voice Command on the 700w? I see the control panel extension, but it doesn't say anything about how to operate or give it commands.

As far as I was able to tell in my explorations of the T700w, it doesn't actually let you input voice commands. The Voice applet in the system settings controls its text-to-speech capability, so that it can announce your caller ID and appointments and so forth.

Using voice commands
1. Assign a Voice Command button. See “Reassigning buttons” on
page 171 for details.
2. Hold your device about 9" away, and then press and release the Voice Command button. A tone plays and a microphone icon
appears at the top of your screen.
3. In a clear voice say, the command. For example, to access Help, say “Help.”
4. After Voice Command finishes speaking a microphone icon
appears at the top of your screen; say your answer. For example, say “General” to access general Help topics.

Huh. Maybe every so often it does pay to read the manual.

I absolutely love being able to just say "unlearned" voice commands on my cell phone (Moto V710). That's one of the main reasons I have not jumped to a GSM RAZR yet. The CDMA RAZR has it but its BT DUN is criplled. The GSM RAZR has to be "trained" for each phonebook entry you want to dial via voice. I'll likely either go for an unlocked V3i or just wait until (if?) Cingular ever start carrying it.

I am stunned that Palm hasn't tried to introduce some "voice comamnder" type of feature on a Palm with a mic & voice recorder. It seems like it'd be an easy extension of FrankenGarnet and give users at least something gimmicks to play around with. On the LifeDrive especially it might be useful to play around with. Imagine having a couple of commands available out of the box and then additional ones learnable. Listening to a song with headphone on while shouting "next track" into your hand is certain to elicit stares ;-)

Surur got you started on invoking it. The coolest thing is, once you get it assigned to a button, press the button (don't press-hold) then just say "Help." It will then answer with a list of topics, you reply with the topic of choice, and on and on and on.

You can ping back and forth with it and it will audibly tell you 95% of what you would ever want to know about it.

"What good is Voice Command when your PDA's unable to hear?

Yes, Palm, perhaps putting a microphone into your PDAs is a good idea after all!

Sure as hell glad they decided to put a mic into their Treos! Sounds extreme but there's no telling what Palm will do during these strange times, after all, they did leave out the microphone from the Tungsten W!

Where is the mic?

fedatoc @ 2/24/2006 5:33:15 PM # Q
I was planning to buy a TX, but the only way to have a mic on a palm handheld is either to buy a LD or to open up the TX and insert it. Should I reconsider buying a second hand TT3?

Actually there is a third option for the TX: an external mic as part of the hotsync connector. It might not be "elegant", but it works.

FWIW, I don't think using the Palm hotsync cable is the best method, but just read the whole thread.

It might not be the "mythical color HandEra", but I'm liking my TX anyway.
