PowerClip Ends the 4k Clipboard Limit

Why would anybody in their right mind want to copy the "Where's the beef" thread? ;-)

Its admirable that supporters manage to patch and extend POS way beyond its Databank-like roots, however a saying about silk purses and sows ears come to mind.

I do find it amazing what some of these guys can do. The "patch job" that the third-party developers have performed on OS5 has certainly helped extend the life of the old POS. It may be dead in the sense that it will not be further developed by the OS author, but these guys keep giving it periodic shots of adrenaline and the heart beats on a little longer. Kudos to Dmitry G. for all his software and hardware hacks.

It might not be the "mythical color HandEra", but I'm liking my TX anyway.

Seeing how:
- the successor to Garnet (i.e. Cobalt) was stillborn
- the PalmOS emulator is only an element of the currently pie in the sky Access Linux Platform
- Palm are selling Windows Mobile Treos
- there are no other high volume licencees of Palm OS
then the Palm OS is at best on life support or at worst, has died on the operating table at the hands of the Access surgeons.

fair enough, there are developers still producing titles for Palm OS but there are developers still producing titles for the Apple Newton, the Amiga and the Atari ST.

Oh and I'm most grateful for this software that raises the clipboard limit; it was an abomination for Palm/PalmSource to have set it so low at 4K.

Please be sure to post info and a URL for DragonEdit here on PIC - (when it's ready) - there's plenty of smart folks that'll be interested in taking a look and providing constructive feedback.

BTW - will it provide a HTML preview feature (or perhaps launch the default web browser via exchange manager) and support 320x480 displays?

How 'bout a slightly sleeker TX formfactor wrapped in black anodized aluminum. Add a 2nd SD slot, charging LED, removable battery and voice recorder/mic. Tweak Garnet a bit more and increase the heap size. Add a 256mb-512mb internal storage drive if there's $ remaining. There's your $350-$400 flagship PDA.

Unfortunately it's not gonna happen. $300 is THE top price point for "conventional" PDAs going forward. 128mb is also the program RAM ceiling for Garnet so the chances of seeing a mildly refreshed TX are slim to none. Palm's certainly not going to sink any more $ into tooling or a new formfactor.

What Palm SHOULDA done is vastly different from what they DID do as well as what they WILL do. Alas.

As far as the Zod, Tapwave should've have put the precious $ they threw at game developers and used it to bolster the Zod's bundled software and media capabilities. It should have been marketed as the uber-PDA media player FIRST and with its gaming capabilities secondary. The Tapwave unlocking mechanism & software store was also doomed from the start.

The 32mb Zod 1 never should have seen the light of day. Instead, they shoulda fielded a Zod 1 w/ 128mb and a true Zod 2 with internal wi-fi and a larger capacity battery a few months after the initial launch. Also hindering Tapwave was the (releatively) high cost & limited capacities of SD cards at the time. Now with <$100 2gb cards available it'd have been a no-brainer for 4gb of pure non-HD storage bliss. Bundling an SD card in the box is never a good price--let the user bring their own and put all of your $ into bolstering the underhood features of the handheld (look at the PSP).

The problem is such a device would be a lower-margin (due to the "quality" of its construction, the tooling for a new FF, component costs etc) and lower volume than what Palm's typcailly accustomed to (Zire, T|E, Treos).

I'd personally rather see all of the features I mention @ $350 MSRP without a cradle vs. half of those features & a cradle at $400. Either way, it'd STILL be a nice unit. Palm should send their clasic POS PDAs out with a band rather than a whimper. Of course wasn't that the strategy for the LifeDrive a year ago?

Also, isn't it OBSCENELY quiet this year on the rumor front? Normally we have leaked pics & semi-accurate specs/price points for the spring releases. Might Palm have NOTHING in store for us this spring--or might they be abandoning their traditional March/October release cycle?
