updated March 13th
Sixapart has released an official press release announcing the acquisition of Splashblog. They have not disclosed the amount. Read on for an official quote on the acquisition.
Splashblog has been acquired by blogging software company SixApart. Just recently, the SixApart logo was added to the mobile photoblogging website, however no official statement has been released by either company. Spalshblog started out as a new service for the Treo and other Palm devices from SplashData, it is also available for the Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms.
SplashBlog streamlines the process of mobile photoblogging, allowing users to capture an image and publish it to an online photoblog in as little as two clicks. SplashBlog includes free software for the mobile device and a free online photoblog account at SplashBlog.com. Users who publish more than 500 pictures can subscribe for additional hosting space for $29.95 per year.
SixApart is the company behind the Movable Type blog publishing software, LiveJournal and TypePad.
“Six Apart has long taken a leading position on mobile blogging,” said Barak Berkowitz, Six Apart’s chief executive officer. “The addition of the SplashBlog team and the rich mobile blogging technologies they have developed will help assure that our users will continue to have the best user experience and most advanced features available when they blog from mobile devices and cell phones.”

Or if like Pixoria's Konfabulator, Yahoo will step in and somehow offer the service for free (or at least bundle the service with one of its existing account offerings)?

That would make two relatively 'new' online technologies that I have come to depend upon that now has a very strong Yahoo! influence (the first was Konfabulator). This could be in response to Google's recent mobile online experience expansion.
