Palm Desktop Google Calendar Synchronization

CompanionLink Software has released CompanionLink for Google Calendar. The solution allows users to synchronize their appointments and meetings that are stored in Google Calendar with the Palm Desktop, Microsoft Outlook, PDAs, and other mobile devices.

CompanionLink for Google Calendar can take data from commonly used desktop calendar applications like Microsoft Outlook and automatically synchronize this information with Google Calendar.

"People never like to re-enter important information, but having it available from multiple sources is extremely productive," says Wayland Bruns, CEO of CompanionLink Software, Inc. "With mobile technology, users need their information extended beyond their own computer or phones. While Google Calendar provides users the ability to share and manage their schedules online, our solution extends the capabilities of Google Calendar by allowing seamless transfer of appointments, meetings, and personal information."

CompanionLink for Google Calendar will synchronize data from Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, Palm Desktop, and all leading mobile devices including Palm OS, Pocket PC, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry. The software retails for $29.95. A free 14-day evaluation version of the software is available at companionlink.com.

What about OTA (over the air) sync with Google Calender?

gfunkmagic @ 5/30/2006 3:50:09 PM # Q
Is this possible with this software? Syncing OTA is the main feature I would like to see. I know there are already 3rd partly solutions like Airest as well mac solution via Markspace MissingSync which allows mac users to sync iCalc with Google Calendar and then the PD...

But being able to sync OTA with Google Calendar on my Treo is what I really want. Being able to share and sync Google Calendar would be a very powerful and useful imo...

This does what you want:
http://www.gcalsync.com/

You can install it by opening the 'IBM Java VM' app (assuming you've already installed it), clicking 'Install', and entering the address to the jar:
http://www.gcalsync.com/GCalSync.jar

You have to approve some annoying security dialogs, and the synching is quite slow (a couple of seconds per event), but it does work, which is very cool.

Interesting. I'm slowly writing the same thing, for my own personal enjoyment so to speak.
The sync engine is complete, and it's not that slow. The peformance is limited by the available bandwidth and the google protocol which often requires sending and receiving records twice to perform updates.
Use of java does prevent access to some event properties, however. For instance categories, which would be very useful to classify events coming from google.

What I need to to next is give some kind of UI to the sync engine and allow extra features such as import of external calendars. For instance to keep the worlcup schedule up to date in the palm's datebook. That was supposed to be for the hockey WC, but development is a slow process indeed.

Hey Admin: Why do we have to keep two profiles?

I tried gcalsyn but it says "phone not supported". Are you trying a palm device? I have the latest Palm.com version of JM (5.71)

Too bad this thing crashes both with MSOL and with Palm Desktop.

Remote Calendars

Isn't this the same as what Remote Calendars does?

No, Remote Calendars needs Outlook 2003 to work. I don't use Outlook AT ALL, but I could use this.

Google application

I was expecting for an application like this being written soon directely from Google. It is in their interest to do so.

Let's see if it really happens.

Wow... I need this software!

As soon as I can sync Palm with Google Calendar, Outlook will be uninstalled for good. And good riddance to bad rubbish.

It's fricking 2006, and outlook still expects every user to be a system administrator, archiving things, exporting and importing flat files, writing scripts, and fixing PST files. microsuck are such idiots.

Tragically, the software didn't work right off. It installed fine, ran fine, but didn't populate google calendar. Almost there guys, almost there! :)

Er... have you already heard of something called "Palm Desktop"?

:-P

Doc Oc is so insane he uses Outlook (instead of non-MS, native Palm Desktop) for the sole purpose of bashing it.

I think Bill Gates should reinforce his personal security until someone throws this boy into an asylum (maybe Arkhan?)...

You sound a little hostile, can't we all get along? :)

Hypothetically, were you able to learn and eventually hold a decent job, you might one day find yourself in an executive capacity.

You'd then notice that it is helpful for your PIM application and email application to be integrated, since very often you want to the software to "create an event from an email". Outlook provides this necessary feature, and so does Gmail/Google Calendar, and soon we'll be able to sync with them.

Oh, and shut your traphole, dickwad. :)

Hope this helped. Have a nice day.

Pity it does not work. Apparently if you have more than 300 events or repeating events its a "known issue". Anyone who is a moderate power user of Datebk is going to be hosed. I will look again when thw APIs are firmed up

I had the same problem. GCalSync tries to work on everything, so it fails on most things. Also, it doesn't really understand repeat rules, which is the guts of a PIM synchronization package. What makes it interesting is that the PIM package (JSR-75) is optional, and implementations vary a great deal by platform. Anyway, I wrote something better, for my own use and that of my friends. I was specific to my phone, the BlackBerry 8700g, and to my friends' phones (mostly Treos, 650 and 700p). People liked it so much that they convinced me to market it (shameless plug: http://www.saraiya.com) .

Exporting from Palm Desktop into Google Calendars

jazzwhistle @ 4/5/2007 11:10:14 PM # Q
I tried different synching methods with Palm Desktop, none to my satisfaction, in fact I had some nasty surprises with faulty synching and lost data :(

In the end I used Dba2csv (http://www.dba2csv.com) which costs 10 bucks and doesn't sync - but it does give me a simple and reliable way to move any Palm Desktop user calendar into a Google calendar, correct timezone troubles and manually edit mistakes before exporting. This actually worked out better for me in the end, but I guess it depends how you use the calendars.

Hope this helps someone.

I have discovered a slightly more costly ($30) way to easily synchronize calendar data from Google Calendar to the Palm Desktop (and vice versa). Both directions work for me (with simple calendar events) in the 14-day eval version:

Hope this helps,

I tried this. But it messed up time zone issues in both directions. I asked them if there is any way to work around this, because I really wanted to buy it. But they never even responded to me.

Does anyone know if this works for non-US timezones?
