How about a Champagne model

PacManFoo @ 6/16/2006 4:10:37 PM # Q
My Vx was the Champagne model.

Seriously, it's kind of dissapointing that they are celebrating 10 years of the Palm with a smartphone. I'm currently thinking of upgrading my tungsten t but reallly am not that impressed with what is out there. The T|X would be my choice I guess, I'd rather have a T|X in a T3 form factor though. The T|X feels cheap compared to the Vx, M505, Tungsten T's that I grew to love Palm for.

PDA's Past and Present:
Palm - IIIxe, Vx, M500, M505, Tungsten T
Handspring - Edge, Platinum
Sony - SJ22
Apple - MP2000, MP2100

Oh, yeah.. yet another 'New' Treo model!!!

joad @ 6/16/2006 4:19:44 PM # Q
Ummm, so I guess this adds "1" to the number of "new Treo models" being released? Isn't that cheating?

Old beer in new bottles hardly merits a celebration, but perhaps reflects the state of innovation the last few years at Palm...

Now I'm going to have to buy one. I'll ebay my current 650 and make up the difference. Black is just sooooo much nicer...

The trouble is that Palm don't ship to Australia. Anyone here got an idea of how I could get one over here?

New black color AND a multi-functional stylus? Where will the innovation end? I'm going to buy some Palm stock right now.

joad @ 6/19/2006 3:00:59 PM # Q
Black case - WOW. Haven't seen that since the IIIc way back in 2000...

I'm with Gekko - until the "Hello Kitty" one comes out, I'm sticking with the plain old whatever case color(s) mine is now. Maybe someday Palm will "get" that most people are more interested in what's *INSIDE* the device rather than what color they spray-paint the case.

But PT Barnam did okay with tactics like this, so all the power to Palm I guess. Put some of the profits toward *never* producing another device short-changed on RAM like the 650 again.

I want the Michael Jordan version
EdH @ 6/21/2006 1:12:05 PM # Q
Now this is the Palm we all know and love. When innovation means a tiger striped changable faceplate! I want the Michael Jordan signature editition with the basketball stat program installed in ROM.

Windows MObile of course. Treo 700wMJ perhaps?

Previous Model...

MegaManXcalibur @ 6/17/2006 1:45:37 AM # Q
Why would Palm release a 10 year special edition Treo that is the previous model. Wouldn't you think they would have made a special edition Palm 700p instead?

Maybe I'm just crazy but this doesn't really make a whole lot of sense in my book.

RE: Previous Model...
freakout @ 6/17/2006 3:23:21 AM # Q
700p doesn't come in a GSM version yet, and may not for awhile, so they'd be limiting their potential market. I guess.

SeldomVisitor @ 6/19/2006 7:10:59 AM # Q
Well...if one wants to pretend that this is indeed the "4th Treo" because PALM couldn't meet (*) their "4 new TREOs this year" promise so had to come up with SOMETHING, then it makes sense to use an easy to "mod" existing TREO to do so.

=======

(*) Or perhaps PALM got early wind of the Q, said the equivalent of "Oh poop!" because they were going to sell THEIR "low end" TREO for $300 and it had fewer features than the Q, and simply made the decision to drop it entirely.

Which stuck them totally with an unfullfilled "promise of 4" that they HAD to meet or get their corporate functional-equivalent-of-"butts" sued by every shareholder out there.

hkklife @ 6/19/2006 9:39:47 PM # Q
What I'd gladly pay $ for is a genuine Palm BLACK battery cover door with that rubberized material on it made for 700-series Treos.

I replaced my stock Palm cover with an ugly blue Seidio cover (review coming soon) with an opening to the reset button. It's sort of creaky and feels "cheaper" than the stock OEM Palm one but it's not as slippery so I'll keep it on there...and it helps distinguish my Treo from the other three (!) 700Ps my colleagues have.

Remember the rumor from a few months ago that Sprint was going to offer the 700P in several fluorescent colors like silver, blue and pink?

50 Cents

jfme @ 6/19/2006 8:18:30 AM # Q
Why didn't palm change the 45-cent 32Mb chip for the 50-cent 64 Mb chip and make this device a whole lot better?

RE: 50 Cents
joad @ 6/19/2006 3:08:23 PM # Q
I think Dmitry Grinberg (or another motivated individual) tried to do just that, and came upon a brick wall of 32MB max. hard-coded into the OS. Yes - that's right - Palm apparently wouldn't even allow people to fix the disasterous Treo 650 themselves.

The Palm VX (8MB) only came about because people bought the Palm V's (2MB) and found the miserly RAM nearly useless with all the good applications they wanted to run - third parties started modifying the devices up to 8MB and Palm woke up to the market and began selling their own 8MB version. The Palm V died shortly thereafter, as given a choice most smart users will always choose the one with more RAM - especially when upgrading is impossible or a substantial expense.

BTW- the 650 architecture is a little more involved- you have a RAM *and* NVFS chip - I guess that doubles your cost estimates. I fully expected Palm to release a Treo "650x" within months after it came out, as the 650 was so unusable. But they dug in their heels - tossed out a few SD cards to bide time, and released a few firmware releases over the next 7 months that eventually gave about 80-90% compatibility with the Treo 600's RAM capability. A year later we finally have the 700p with a decent amount of RAM, but requires the additional expense of EVDO plans (I could live without it), Phone-As-Modem charges, and other add-ons beyond the internal memory fixes.

Short answer to your question: I guess it's easier to paint the cases black and give you a different stylus than to make needed increases to the internal memory of a device. If people buy it, then that justifies their move.

"A year later we finally have the 700p with a decent amount of RAM"

Those of us outside North America (i.e. most of the world) still have to suffer with the Treo 650.
RE: 50 Cents
freakout @ 6/22/2006 5:46:03 AM # Q
joad, the 650's paltry RAM does indeed suck, but it hardly makes the device unusable, especially if you have a high-capacity SD card. The only upgrade I think that's really necessary now for the 650 is FAT32. Wonder if Palm are going to issue any more firmware updates...

joad @ 6/25/2006 5:40:38 PM # Q
I have a 2GB card, and twice that amount wouldn't make up for insufficient internal memory... unless you have some secret to safely running large "RAM only" databases and applications from the SD card?

I'll have to agree that the T650 isn't necessarily "unusable" - perhaps the description should be "miserably usable."

As for the FAT32 on the T650, you're in luck: http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=106598

Cheers!

^^ No secrets, just much less demanding software requirements than you, methinks. ;)

As to the Shadowmite FAT32 hack... it's embarassing to admit, but I'm too frightened of lobotimising my Treo and rendering even more "miserably usable" than it is now ;) to bother with custom ROMS. If Palm keep dragging their heels on an official update, though, I might just give it a go.

Get PowerRUN and move as many apps as possible out of RAM using it. PowerRUN is probably the most important utility available for PalmOS PDAs next to a good backup app.

freakout, you don't need a custom ROM to run the FAT32 hack--just put it on the card, and move it into main memory using Filez or the equivalent. It will work from there.

I have been betrayed!
freakout @ 6/26/2006 5:51:53 AM # Q
I guess it's *not* that easy, after all...

I did a soft reset after I copied the FAT32.prc file to RAM via Filez. I'm pleased to announce I've just lost my "endless reset loop" virginity. Hard reset and backup and everything's okay again now.

Erm, what did I miss?

RE: 50 Cents
AdamaDBrown @ 6/26/2006 12:48:32 PM # Q
Um. It's really not supposed to do that. AFAIK it's supposed to be as simple as sticking the driver on the device. I don't know what could cause it to react that way.

RE: 50 Cents
freakout @ 6/26/2006 5:38:26 PM # Q
Some poking around on Google seems to indicate that I need to replace the FATFS.prc file in ROM, not just copy the FAT32.prc into RAM. Perhaps this a 650-specific issue?

Anyhoo, thanks for your help anyways. I think I'll have to take the custom ROM plunge this weekend.

650 FAT32 ROM upgrade

For anyone who finds this thread while searching for information on the same thing, all the necessary information (including all the standard international Palm ROMS and the FAT32 driver) can be found in this post at Treocentral:

http://tinyurl.com/ookyc

You'll need an SD Card, a Treo and half an hour. I just did it tonight, everything is working fine with a FAT32-formatted 2GB card. Now to try a 4GB card...

Oh, and don't be scared by the ugliness of the ROM tool. It's easy to work out if you're moderately computer literate.

How'd they feel in the hand after the paintjobs? I'm almost tempted to do this to my 650, 'cept I'm worried about the effect it'd have on the keyboard and if it would have that "tacky" feeling most spraypainted things do.

Well, they felt pretty good. The gloss enamel really looks nice, and doesn't have too much stick to it at all.

With regard to the 650, I will let you know. I am going to use a flat or satin enamel on my now dead 650, and transplant my living one into that shell. I don't have a huge amount of time right now, but should get it done by the end of the weekend.

Stay tuned to my site. :-)

SOLD OUT!

Curses! The Black Tie 650 is no longer available through Palm.com, and there seems to be no indication that it'll be offered for sale anywhere else.

This has been the case since Saturday. Sold out in just over a week! Did Palm not make very many, or was it a really hot seller? How long has it taken previous "special edition" Palms to sell out?

Oh, and Dammit!! :(

Relax, Bubba. I saw Ed Colligan at Costco this weekend and he was loading several hundred cans of Krylon spray paint into his Volvo.

Krylon dries within a few hours, so the Krylon Black Magik™ Special Edition Treos should be back in stock as we speak.
