VersaMail 3.5.4 Update for Verizon 700p Users

Palm has quietly decided to let Verizon Treo 700p owners in on the updated version of VersaMail shipping with the new Treo 755p and the Sprint 700p ROM update. A quick check of Palm's support page for the Verizon version of the 700p reveals slightly modified install instructions:

"After you install the Treo 700p Update, you must upgrade your version of VersaMail to 3.5.4, which includes the Exchange ActiveSync Update. Get it here after you install update."

Following the provided link goes to the MyPalm beta portal support site (otherwise unchanged). Where users are prompted to input their devices' serial numbers in order to download the updated version of VersaMail.

The main improvement found in VersaMail 3.5.4 over the earlier 3.5.1 and 3.5 versions is integrated support for Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync. Exchange ActiveSync enables Microsoft’s Direct Push e-mail service on Palm OS Treo devices.

I've been using VersaMail 3.5.4 for a full day now on my 1.10 700p and on a Sprint 755p. The updated version also appears to benefit from additional stability compared to the earlier 3.5.1 version.

This update is for Verizon Treo 700p owners, as Sprint's previously released v1.10 ROM Maintenance Release contains the updated VersaMail in ROM and Palm does not have plans to release any 700p ROM updates for users on Alltel, Telus, Bell or CellularSouth networks.

It works, but...

dgbrock @ 7/17/2007 4:19:26 PM # Q
I loaded it twice, and ended up contacting Palm Support, before learning that v3.5.4 does not show up as "VersaMail" on the Treo, as the old one did, but only as "email". This is not a problem, unless you are - like me - running Good Messenger, which has its own program called "email". Now you just have to learn which is which.
Some tense moments programing my hard buttons with 2 programs with the same name. About 5 minutes of my life wasted.
Otherwise, the new app does seem more stable.

Will it work with the 650?

I am still waiting for the 755p on VZ. Will this work with the 650? Does it sync notes and tasks?

Plus, it's not broken.

You forgot to mention another minor feature, namely, it's not broken. VersaMail 3.5.1 completely breaks Exchange ActiveSync with the MR. I don't think Palm had a choice but to release it.

Whaaatttt no Alltel update, why do some people who purchased the get an update to the lag but others do not? That doesn't make one bit of sense to me. So I just have to suffer? Thanks Palm

This is all you need to know:

AT&T - 62.2 million subscribers
Verizon Wireless - 60.7 million subscribers
Sprint Nextel Corporation - 53.6 million subscribers
T-Mobile USA - 25 million subscribers
Alltel - 12.06 million subscribers

(March 2007, numbers provided by the CTIA)

Sorry, man, it's a numbers game. All the companies use different network protocols, firmware, and probably even hardware. The update costs Palm the same amount of money regardless of how many subscribers there are. They simply chose to spend their money where it would have the most impact, and chose to give the others the shaft.

Naw.... Palm is an Equal (missed)-Opportunity Ignorer. The 53.6 million Sprint subscribers and 60.7 million Verizon subscribers didn't mean diddle to Palm when it came to getting some "patch love" on the 700p.

It's nice that Palm is tossing little updates to the suckers that bought and have kept their defective 700p's this long (maybe to avert a justifiable class action suit). But having a fix within a month(s) instead of a whole year for the bluetooth, if not the lag would have shown a little more respect for those subscribers.

Since Palm owns Versamail, this update shouldn't cost them much, if anything, to offer - since the development costs were already written off toward the 755. Still, nice of them to offer SOME fixes to the 700p that don't require a purchase of the Treo 755.

I think it's also safe to speculate that by this point we're not going to see a 755p on Verizon (or perhaps ANY other CDMA carrier other than Sprint!).

So I managed to talk Verizon into sending me a refurb'd 700p with the 1.10 already on it. I just ordered a new Seidio case for my 700p and I'll probably buy another SDHC card and try to ride out another year with it.

I think it's safe to say that a patched 700p with this latest version of VersaMail is FINALLY performing as it should have over a year ago at its release.

Did Palm forget that they 'stopped' supporting Macs?

critic @ 7/17/2007 10:40:06 PM # Q
I've been sitting here for 15 minutes trying to figure out where Palm's installer put my minty-fresh version of VersaMail...only to discover that the installer dropped it into the 'add ons' folder along with the Palm Desktop app.

Which would be fine...if I were using that application, and not Missing Sync.

Oh, and the best part? It installs 6 different language versions of the app, not just English.

Mac users: Do yourself a favor and don't run Palm's installer. Instead, right-click/ctrl-click on Versamail.pkg and choose 'show package contents', click on the 'contents' folder, then unpack the 'Archive.pax.gz' file - you'll get an 'Applications' folder within the package, which contains the six versions and all of the requisite PRC files. Grab what you need, trash what you don't.

When I select menu + "m" or menu and scroll to "get mesage", I get a pop up box with an "ok" button and thats it. However if I tap the "get" button at the bottom of the screen, it retrieves my mesages. ANyone else experiencing this?

PRC?

gatzke @ 7/27/2007 3:50:31 PM # Q

Why not just give a simple prc file to install? Retarded.

I finally bought a 700p after I read the MR was a pretty good fix. Retarded.

It takes three or four seconds to switch to the phone application. Retarded.

The original VersaMail application rebooted me at least three times a day. Retarded.

I was holding out for a 755p on Verizon, but I realized I wanted a SD card and the antenna (to help get it out of the pouch). Retarded.

It's possible to get the update consolidated as a single PRC. PM me for more details or check TreoCentral's forums.
