Verizon Treo 755p in September?

Rumor: We reported previously on the Verizon 755p suffering a minor delay to its initial launch time. Now a supposed screenshot from Verizon's internal release roadmap shows that the newest CDMA Treo has suffered another setback and will not launch until September 4th, 2007.

The authentic-looking image (read on to view) was posted to the Howard Chui Forums' Verizon thread from a poster who appears to be a Verizon Wireless employee. There is no sign on this latest device roadmap surrounding the rumored Windows Mobile-powered Treo 800w.

Verizon Treo 755p launch

Previous reports have also indicated that the Verizon version of the 755p may include EVDO Rev. A, which would coincide with the recent news of Verizon completing their EVDO network upgrade, but the usual technical limitations of OS Garnet would make this appear fairly unlikely.

In all likelihood, Verizon's usual stringest handset testing and approval process is the likely culprit for the delay. Verizon also may want to wait until the back to school shopping season and/or until some of the furor surrounding the iPhone launch has subsided.

755p for GSM

swieder @ 7/5/2007 5:08:08 PM # Q
How about coming out with the 755p for GSM users?

Well OK. But, how about releasing something that's not a repainted 4+ year old Treo 600 and with a 5 year old OS, on a GSM or CDMA network? Don't mean to be to pushy, but it is nearly 2008. I hope I'm not the last one left who has to turn out the lights Palm.

Dated OS, but it works
gatzke @ 7/6/2007 9:43:55 AM # Q
Even though the treo is dated, it works well in so many ways.

This is terrible news. My Verizon sales guys say they have no clue when it will be coming in, so maybe he is not lying this time...

I played with an iphone on Wednesday. There are some issues that would make it a show stopper for me.

-Keyboard stinks. Best way I could get anything typed accurately was hold it in one hand and point with the other.
-No correction in web URLs and email addresses, so you have to be perfect.
-No period in the keyboard (period, /, and .com buttons in web browser kbd)
-Touch buttons too small. Although my Treo 650 screen buttons are often too small, but I rarely use them)
-No removable media (Why switch to mini SD Palm? idiots)
-No video recording
-No editing MS word documents
-No EVDO (Edge was slow when it worked)
-No sereo bluetooth (http://www.softick.com/bluetooth-audio/)
-No third party applications (Chess, new browser, core media player, etc)
-No laptop networking using phone (http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/)
-No removable battery (Like 2x capacity TP)
http://shop.treonauts.com/content/accessories/---2512.htm
-No way to quickly dial contacts
-No way to navigate single handed (five way rocker rocks)
-No tactile feedback (I like a click when I hang up the phone)
-No GPS addons like
http://hardware.smartphonetools.treobits.com/content/accessories/10-95--2230.htm
with free software links to free google maps
http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&PartnerREF=&siteid=1&prodID=131735

More iPhone limitations from
http://palmaddict.typepad.com/palmaddicts/2007/06/why-the-iphone-.html
-No exchange integration for online calendering
-No hacks for "push" email
-No voice call recording
-No voice dial
-No cut and paste!
-No task list!
-No global find!
-No file encryption
-No podcast download over the air

iPhone does have:
-Slick gui (that gets in the way, browsing on safari was stinky. Zoom and scroll, zoom and scroll, not too impressed. Sideways was nice)
-Wifi built-in
-Widescreen
-More MP in camera (2.0 vs 1.2 in treo 755, both suck)
-Thin form factor
-Glass screen (more fragile than treo?)
-Did I say sexy GUI?

Neither have-
-Built in GPS
-Flash in browser
-Wireless networking for letting laptops online easily

So the Treo pros outweigh the cons. I am sticking with a new 755p as soon as I can get it, which looks like September

10 new phones on September 4th??

French. @ 7/5/2007 6:52:15 PM # Q
From what I can see there are at least 10 phones listed for September 4th. That seems rather unlikely.

Treo 755 on Verizon Delayed AGAIN?

JRAD @ 7/6/2007 2:07:42 PM # Q
Major Bummer.

My last smart phone was the Blackberry from Verizon and I had to give it up when I left my job. Now the new job only supports palm or windows so BB is not an option. I have been with out for a year and really didn't want to buy old form factor in the 700p. I realize that it is not a lot different than the 755 but they would both be new to me and since the price on the 700 doesn't seem to be budging...

I just wish they would speed it up and get it out. I hate waiting for new technology! GRRR

Err,not quite. In this case, you're basically waiting for old technology wrapped in a new shell!

;-)

Either way, I am not counting on EVER seeing the 755p on Verizon. I forsee VZW moving to a unified lineup consisting solely of WinMob & BB units. No more POS for Verizon IMO....they never were strong supporters of POS like Sprint was and I do not see that changing going forward.

I get new-every-two in September. So I am hoping that the 755p will be out by then for Verizon. I have too much invested in medical and reference applications for the PalmOS. It has to a PalmOS unit and nothing less for me.
