Unlocked & Cingular Treo 680 Now Available

Treo 680Palm today announced the unlocked Palm Treo 680 smartphone’s preorder availability from Palm’s website. The unlocked Treo 680 will be available in four colors exclusively from Palm.com for $399 USD. It can be preordered today and will be available at Palm U.S. retail stores after Dec. 1st.

Palm Treo 680“The unlocked Treo 680 smartphone will reach new customers and markets, exemplifying Palm’s dedication to expanding both geographically and demographically,” said John Hartnett, senior vice president, global markets, Palm, Inc. “The Treo 680 smartphone will attract new users in the smartphone and feature-phone markets through affordability, ease of use and style.”

The Palm OS based Treo 680 smartphone has an internal antenna and slim form factor, making the device smaller and sleeker than its Treo predecessors. It’s also the first Treo smartphone to come in unique colors. The SIM unlocked version denotes that it can be used with just about any GSM service provider with an existing GSM/GPRS/EDGE service plan. The version that Cingular offers can only be used on the Cingular network.

The Treo 680 is powered by Palm OS Garnet v5.4.9. It runs a 312 MHz Intel processor and has 64MB of user available storage memory and 64MB of SDRAM. The screen is a 320 x 320 pixel color touch-screen display. The 680 features a full size SD slot for memory expansion. It has a slimmer 1200 mAh rechargeable battery for up to 4 hours talk time. Bluetooth v1.2 wireless and IR are included as well as a VGA digital camera.

The phone is a GSM/GPRS/EDGE Class 10 device and has a internal quad-band (850/900/1800/1900) antenna that is said to feature improved TIS/TRP performance (better RF reception) than the Treo 650.

It has dimensions of 2.29" x 4.40" x 0.8" inches (58.4 x 111.8 x 20.3 mm) and weighs in at 5.5 ounces (156g).

For a limited time, the Treo 680 will come with a music bundle from Yahoo!, which includes a 30-day free trial to its Yahoo! Music Unlimited To Go service and Yahoo! Music For Mobile. Users have the ability to access the Yahoo! Music Unlimited music library from the phone and to send tracks remotely to a PC.

Palm and Cingular today also announced the Treo 680 will be available in Cingular stores beginning Friday, Nov. 24. The Cingular Palm Treo 680 will be sold for $199 with a two year contract agreement and an unlimited data plan.

'bout time. Don't you dare sell out of the red ones, Palm.

Yay, the 680 is also listed on the Australian Palm Website. This is the first Treo coming to Australia since the 650. I am tempted by the increase in memory.
Agreeing that the red is cool.

Just as I suspected...

... we Aussies are going to get shafted on choice of colours. Graphite only for us!

(well, not me - I'm waiting for my USA mail forwarding address to be registered, so I can buy direct from Palm US. Should only be a week or so now. :D )

RE: Hooray!!!!!!
Docta G @ 11/22/2006 5:03:08 AM # Q
Well at least you Aussies have one colour. The 680 still isn't listed on the NZ site.

However the 750 is listed, but that don't run POS...

Oh well, whatever, nevermind
vorlon @ 11/22/2006 5:31:10 AM # Q
Finally a moderately priced GSM Treo is available! Or so I thought. Treo 650 costed here in Finland 599 euros or about 770 US dollars! And Treo 680 costs 399 dollars in the US, so in Finland: 499 euros. That's 640 USD! Including 22 % tax, but still... And in Finland only 3G phones can be subsidized by carriers, so no help from there. I guess Treo 270 will have to do. I mean, for that kind of money it should be a 3G (like Treo 750) and have a better camera.

I live in Nokialand, so only GSM, no Blackberries or Sidekicks or Treo 7X0s.

Yeah, only one colour for us Aussies....but still it is a HUGE improvement on the long wait before we got the 650.....and the 700p (and 700w, 700wx & 750v) did not arrive here at all.
I'll settle for graphite if the Australian price is not inflated, otherwise I will also try sourcing one from the USA. I am going to the USA in Nov next year but that is too long to wait....I might be after a newer model by then. ;)

Ouch...the Finland prices are very high. Any chance that you can source one from the USA? eBay might be useful.

Why does the Australian palm site list the Treo680 as having a 1.3 megapixel camera??? Typo?

To vorlon:
I completely agree with you.
In Italy where I live it costs 499 euro (tax included, unlocked) which are equal to $643,71 (tax included, unlocked)!!! It's 48% more than USA!!! (I have considered 8.5% tax of CA for $434). And there is no carrier version at the moment (at least not in Italy).
When I bought my TX several months ago I paid 14% more than USA (referring to CA) which is ok because we have 2 year warranty and more taxes.
Now they are asking me $643,71 , 48% more than USA, for a smartphone with no wi-fi, no umts, 640x480 camera...
The price is very disappointing!!! :-(

What do you mean by "USA mail forwarding address"

Thanks...

For $35 USD you can get a US street address at their building. After that it's $35 per shipment they forward on, unless you pay a subscription in which case you get free shipments.

You'll need to send them a USPS form (they'll send you a link when you sign up) witnessed by a notary public authorising them to act as your agents. You'll also have to provide two forms of ID.

It's pretty cool.

SeldomVisitor @ 11/23/2006 8:03:49 AM # Q
Someone somewhere (probably TreoCentral post) said PALM is checking the origin of the credit cards used to order and disallowing nonUSA ones.

"Your" address doesn't matter.

Relayed very secondhand so take with rather large grain of salt.

RE: Hooray!!!!!! Cheap 750, too
SeldomVisitor @ 11/23/2006 8:47:46 AM # Q
However, if you wish, you can order a TREO 750 for $120 from Amazon if you use an Amazon Visa card and don't mind a $40 minute plan with a $20 dataplan from Cingular for two years.

At least that was the case as of about 10 minutes prior to this post being posted.

Giggle.

S'alright. If need be, they also offer a personal shopper service, so I can just send them packing to one of the Palm retail stores.

I will not be denied my Crimson satisfaction!

Treo 680 now available in the UK for $520

ChiA @ 11/27/2006 2:00:45 PM # Q
www.expansys.com boast no less than 295 in stock at £285 per piece (yes $520 in Yankie money); it's still on pre-order on the Palm UK store.

You can get it for £50 if you sign up for a £35/month call plan with nodata allowance.

Incredibly the Palm UK store is still selling the Treo 650 at £399!!!
I guess only those smoking crack or with an unwholesome urge to stick the 650 antenna where the sun don't shine will go for that "offer".

That's $550+ in US dollars, not $520:

Gee - with SUCH a low price (PALM sure is lowballin' 'em lately, eh!?) they're sure to sell like hotcakes!

Well fool on me for using last week's exchange rate, fingers crossed with this rate of devaluation £285 should be worth $600 by Christmas!

Start using your dollars to buy pounds or gold today whilst the money's still worth something! Hyperinflation can be a biotch!

Better still, be a true American by working that bit harder and keeping your currency strong, true and proud!!

As Gekko often points out, the rest of us in the world are dependent on American goodwill and generosity, don't fail us in our moment of need, we're all counting on you!

I used usamail1.com to ship my Palm from the US. I've had only good experiences with their mail forwarding service. Their web site is also really easy to navigate. What I like the most about their service is that I can use my Paypal account, and they ship with the US Postal Service, so I often save on customs fees.
