Palm To Release Windows Mobile 6 Devices

As reported last week, Microsoft today officially announced Windows Mobile 6 at Barcelona's 3GSM trade show. New features have all been confirmed, including HTML email, Windows Live integration and Direct Push technology. For Palm fans, the most interesting tidbit from the press announcement comes halfway through, where Microsoft state:

"Scores of additional mobile operators and device makers from around the globe, including Cingular Wireless, now the new AT&T, Chunghwa Telecom, Dopod International Corp., HP, LG Electronics, Motorola Inc., Palm Inc., Samsung, Sprint, Telefónica, Toshiba, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, plan to ship Windows Mobile 6-based devices this year."

There's been some speculation that Palm's upcoming code named Sherlock device for Sprint will be a CDMA version of the Windows Mobile Treo 750. If true, then it will possibly be sporting Windows Mobile 6.

Treo 755 = Sherlock?

hkklife @ 2/12/2007 12:19:10 AM # Q
Yup, I figure that the Treo 750 will make for a pretty easy CDMA variant called the 755. I'll also wager that this will be Palm's first WinMob Treo with a resolution other than 240x240--320x320 in this case (yes, WinMob 6 supports that resolution).

Then Palm can take the IDENTICAL hardware, load a "fixed" version of FrankenGarnet onto it, and call it the Treo 745p or something and sell it for $50-$100 less.

Easy $ indeed for Sprint and Verizon! The WinMob & Palm OS versions can now have totally identical hardware. And of course, it lets Palm sidestep the whole SDHC support issue by for another year regressing to miniSD.

I expect Palm's Treo lineup to look like this by year's end:

Treo 680 (POS, GSM) Entry level

Treo 750 (WinMob5 GSM) Midrange (expect a big price drop once WinMob 6 hits)

Treo 745p (POS CDMA) Midrange

Treo 755 (WinMob6 CDMA) High-end
(This will be the "Mercedes" model with EVDO RevA Colligan hinted at earlier)

Pilot 1000-->Pilot 5000-->PalmPilot Pro-->IIIe-->Vx-->m505-->T|T-->T|T2-->T|C-->T|T3-->T|T5-->TX-->Treo 700P

makes sense. keeps R&D and manufacturing costs down to keep the hardware the same among platforms - let the customer decide whoch OS they want and flash the OS onto the hardware supply per carrier's order requests. no fuss, no muss, apologists and fanboys be damned. at the end of the day, customers will decide which one is "better".

Why are they wasting time on the other team's software?

Is Palm going to get it together, or not? I'm simply not going to migrate to Windows Mobile. If I have to jump platforms, it will be to something else.

I like PalmOS. I just wish it didn't suck so much. It sucks slightly less than Windows Mobile, but that's faint praise.

Oh well. My Sprint contract is expired, and I can hang until Apple gets their game sorted.

Palm has done quite well with selling WM Treos and so I don't think that they mind one bit the extra $$$ that WM has brought. Also, with how they pulled off WM5, I am not surprised that WM6 is much more user friendly. If Palm continues to tweak at WM, and does something a bit better than the 750 that we have seen, I am pretty sure that they can milk WM just a bit longer while also doing Garnet OS doings.

MSFT consulted with PALM on WM6.

Anyone who has used WM6 will know that it is NOT more user-friendly than WM5... they've warmed over the UI with prettier icons and a few other bits of fluff (OK, HTML email is nice) - but the overall USABILITY still sucks.

Not at all is a pretty strong statement. You wont even go for slightly more user friendly?

So having shortcut keys in the e-mail app isn't user friendly? Or being able to filter e-mail by typing, or being able to save playlists in WMP? How about having an app to install certificates, or being able to dial from the today screen? How about windows update on the device, instead of having to wait for a ROM update?

I think its slightly more user friendly after all.

I plan on implementing Windows Vista on my next computer

SeldomVisitor @ 2/12/2007 5:58:59 AM # Q
How come?

Perhaps for the same reason PALM plans on implementing Windows Mobile 6 on their next computer?

Or any other Windows Mobile-using manufacturer?

> ...For Palm fans, the most interesting tidbit...

Nah, what would be interesting - real interesting - is if PALM said "We're not interested and are sticking with 5".
