CorePlayer v1.1 Update Released

CorePlayer - Palm OSCorecodec has released version 1.1 of its CorePlayer portable video and media application. This update has been several months in the making and includes over 750 changes/updates/fixes according to the company. The primary new features include a new CoreTheque media library, Bluetooth headphone support, numerous palm os and treo fixes, rss support, skin support and stability improvements.

CorePlayer for Palm OS v1.1.0 is available for $19.95 USD. It is also available for Windows Mobile.

CorePlayer has a long and illustrious history as the formerly free TCPMP media application. TCPMP was originally the brainchild of ace programmer Gabor Kovacs (AKA Picard) who ported his Betaplayer Windows Mobile/PPC media app to Palm OS under the guise of TCPMP. While the free TCPMP player has been discontinued, it lives on the commercial CorePlayer. You can read more about the app in our CorePlayer review.

where is the download for registered users???

joad @ 6/19/2007 3:01:21 PM # Q
Well, they have no trial so you have to buy it, and you do. Ho-hum, TCPMP is better but they promise improvement "later"...

THEN - they release a bugfix and you try to find it - WHERE???? Log into your "core account" and it's devoid of content. Check with Mobihand and all they have is your activation code....AAAArrgh!!.

This stuff is the poster child for why people pirate software. When I've paid my licensing fee - why can't I log into where I bought it or log into the developer's site and easily find the update without 1/2 hour or more of searching around?!??

I'm tempted to waste the next half hour searching around torrent sites just to find a cracked version as it'll probably be faster than getting it from the people I've already paid for the software. Ripoff!!

Yup, this is one of those "refer back to the original registration e-mail we sent you 9 months ago for the download link" programs.

I'd wager a good chunk of mobile piracy is due to stuff like this. It's often easier to hunt around for a cracked or warez version of many apps online than it is to try and use the developer/publisher's broken/abandoned/flaky/processed by human reg code systems.

I wish someone would publish a sh!tlist of companies who have impossibly restrictive/bad reg code systems.

For example, my 700p has a rapidly dying digitizer. Yet I am terrified to get Verizon to send me a new one under extended warranty because then I'd have to get new reg codes for apps that are tied to the device ID (TomTom 6, for one). Then if I upgrade to a 755p or an 800p or whatever in 6 months to a year I'll have to go through the same hoops again.

Valve Software's Steam platform is the PARADIGM for downloadable software.

You know, I once counted it up and I since the days of my Vx I figured I'd spent $300 (perhaps more by now) on Palm OS software that had been adandoned or from companies that had gone under. That really irks me. And it does no good to print out the e-mails & reg codes for apps that require a new reg code to be generated each time you change to a new piece of hardware.

Just checked my email and sure enough there was an email from MobiHand with an upgrade link. Where did you buy yours through?

PDA's Past and Present:
Palm - IIIxe, Vx, M500, M505, Tungsten T, TX
Handspring - Edge, Platinum, Deluxe
Sony - SJ22
Apple - MP110, MP2000, MP2100

Yeah - this was odd - just got mine too and it actually pointed to a *real* download link. Guess the coreplayer people got tired of answering their phone, fax and email for the same question ;) This is the first time I've ever got a link from Mobihand, and I've been signed up all along.

BTW - looks like Crashpro finally was updated for the 755. But the file Mobihand points to is still v2.26 right now, gotta go to the developer's site..

I must say I was positively amazed to see an email with the subject "CorePlayer for PalmOS has been updated - new v1.1.0" in my inbox today. I did buy it at mobihand back then and being among the first to know about this new version makes me feel just the way I think I'm supposed to: that I'm better off having bought this excellent piece of software.

If you log in at mobihand you should see a download link right next to your activation code, btw...

Slight misunderstandings can cause a bad image for software or the company that's developing it, but I hope that you'll find you spent your money well investing in CoreCodec when you bought CorePlayer Mobile. :-)

- deucalion (a happy CorePlayer/TCPMP* user)

(* TCPMP only for WMV and AAC files, as CoreCodec hasn't released their CorePlayer Add-On that supports AAC yet. But it's in the works already, IIRC.)

Hi joad, I let mobihand know about the situation and they sent out the email and made sure previously registered users can go into their account and download the update.

If you purchased via the PalmInfocenter store, log into your store account:

http://software.palminfocenter.com/myaccount.asp

And you will find the download link there.

Thanks, Ryan. I have the "email me when an app is updated" box checked, but I never hear from Mobihand (the same backend for Palminfocenter I think). Maybe they'll implement it so you won't need to call them next update ;)

When I originally logged into Mobihand this morning they didn't have the links up, now they do. Odd.

Amen to all your points, hkklife - the "tying it to your serial" nonsense is really invasive - WTF prevents them from taking it steps further and remotely accessing our devices or causing other damage? And what a PITA every time you have a device change!

There's a line that developers like this have crossed over, and a boycott is in order for every developer that likewise bites the hands that pays them for their software.

These ridiculous Kafkaesque procedures for their paying customers to get software and updates have me feeling completely ripped off and rooting for the pirates. I barely use this software as it is, and all the "improvements" promised by buying as an early adopter have thusfar been nothing but hot air. Scammers, and nothing more.

I hope that someone posts the file somewhere on the 'net soon - I've already got my key!!

Compounding all of this is CorePlayer's utter lack of an auto-update from within the app. Hey, aren't Treos (and their companion Foleos) supposed to be the new PCs? Well at least give us the option to update it from within the app. Normsoft has this down pat with PTunes. Kinoma does it very nicely as well! The CoreCodec team are becoming the Palm of the software worls--an early hit (TCPMP/Pilot) then numerous missed deadlines, half-baked products, and stingy/greedy business practices that are so bad they keep current users from upgrading and make their old products appear nearly superior in comparison!

As to that customer-unfriendly blacklist I mentioned earlier.....I nominate Aerodrome Software, DataViz, TomTom, MDM/Filao and CoreCodec as the inaugural members. There are a couple of has-been game developers that have gone cell phone exclusive or simply folded but the above should be a good start.

Oh, and so no one fusses--I've had nothing but superb support from Toysoft, Hobbyist Software, Astraware, and SplashData in the past . I will continue to use, purchase, and recommend products from those guys.

Handmark has a poor history of actually supporting their apps (heck, I'm still waiting on OS5, 320x320 and/or 320x480 support for some of their titles!) but their actual customer service reps are friendly and helpful.

Oh jeez... don't even get me started on Dataviz. They include an (*always* out of date) app in the ROM, then it's a major event just to get the thing up to date, play with their archaic serial number setup, etc. It's a train wreck of many, many files of varyin versions, hogs up the ROM (and RAM if kept current), and they're always trying to make you buy the "upgrade." ferggeddaboutit...

Curiously, I received an unsolicited "update link" from the vendor today (same one I previously logged into a few hours ago) and viola! - *NOW* there's access to a download link on Mobihand for CorePlayer. How bizarre.

"Kafkaesque" - nice word. I had to Google this one.

Kafkaesque
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
"Kafkaesque" is an auctorial descriptive which is used to describe concepts, situations, and ideas which are reminiscent of the literary work of Prague writer Franz Kafka, particularly his novel The Trial and his novella The Metamorphosis.

The term, which is quite fluid in definition, has also been described as "marked by a senseless, disorienting, often menacing complexity: Kafkaesque bureaucracies" [1] and "marked by surreal distortion and often a sense of impending danger: Kafkaesque fantasies of the impassive interrogation, the false trial, the confiscated passport . . . haunt his innocence" — The New Yorker. [2]

It can also describe an intentional distortion of reality by powerful but anonymous bureaucrats. "Lack of evidence is treated as a pesky inconvenience, to be circumvented by such Kafkaesque means as depositing unproven allegations into sealed files ..." Another definition would be an existentialist state of ever-elusive freedom while existing under unmitigatable control.

The adjective refers to anything suggestive of Kafka, especially his nightmarish type of narration, in which characters lack a clear course of action, the ability to see beyond immediate events, and the possibility of escape. The term's meaning has transcended the literary realm to apply to real-life occurrences and situations that are incomprehensibly complex, bizarre, or illogical.

It basically does the same, without the graphics. And it's free. :)
