Verizon Palm Pre 2 Training Starting Soon

Palm Pre 2 verizon Although this may come as a surprise to many after the disappointing rollout and myriad promotions for the Pre Plus on Verizon earlier in the year, everyone's favorite CDMA giant appears poised for an imminent launch of the Pre 2, according to a new Engadget story and accompanying blurrycam shot.

The leaked screenshot accompanying the article is from the internal VZLearn training portal. It confirms the fact that the Pre 2 for indirect channels is slated to receive online training soon. As of this date, no additional details such as availability, pricing, or release on other carriers have been provided, though Verizon traditionally begins training on upcoming devices less than a month before retail availability.

Additionally, the arrival of the Pre 2 would nicely coincide with the rumored VZW Pre Plus EOL dates we reported on in August and last week's rumor roundup.

Pre 2 vs. Droids

Gekko @ 10/15/2010 12:48:48 PM # Q

ask a VZW Sales Rep what you should buy - and guess the answer.

You have inside info or just wag? I wouldn't mind trying this but I'm hung up for about 8 months on my current contract. Any body else going to spring for one if this is correct?

Sorry, just noticed last sentence of story. Verizon training just doesn't amount to a hill of beans. They and Palm could not get my Pre on the network. Had to resort to forums to get it working. If you have to call Verizon or Palm go get a cup of coffee and read the forums. You'll be farther ahead.

this is futile. all of the VZW sales droids will steer customers to the droids. they have a severe distaste for all things Palm - and rightfully so. don't believe me? go into any VZW store and play dumb (easy for many of you to do) and ask the sales droids what you should get and ask them what they think of the Palm products.

Yay for the Pre2!!!

Wynter @ 10/18/2010 7:16:36 AM # Q
Not.

What is there to train on? The familiarity with the slight spec bump? Is the screen higher rez, or just the same lowest rez screen of all the smart phones? Other than the features of WebOS 2.0, there's not much different. My Pre Plus was a free upgrade. I'm not spending money on a spec bumped Pre Plus + (i.e. "Pre 2).

Well, there's not that much new but VZW corporate policy is still corporate policy, so training is mandatory for ANY new device, no matter how slight the refresh.

Incremental upgrades happen all the time....RAZR V3c to V3m, Treo 700p to 755p, Treo 700w to 700wx, Moto Droid to Droid 2, etc etc.

I do agree that VZW seems an odd destination for the Pre 2 (as opposed to Sprint) but it also could be to VZW's rather strong push of various HP netbooks containing built-in 3G connectivity. HP might even try to start pushing their WebOS phones as "hotspot phones" or as HP netbook companions. Or it could just be VZW wanting to prop up some other non-Android devices in lieu of the continued absence of the CDMA iPhone. E

ither way, it's a good sign that the original Pre's stagnation due to Sprint exclusivity last year won't be repeated under HP.

Let's just hope it isn't an exclusive launch on VZW. Sprint users surely won't be pleased and are likely to bail, with the EVO 4G and other options available. The only real option on AT&T is the iPhone. The Torch doesn't cut it and the Aria is week. I don't anticipate the Pre2 coming to AT&T unless it's a "Pre 2 +". I just want WebOS 2.0 on my existing Pre Plus. Don't need a new phone right now.

My prediction?

CDMA Pre 2 on VZW next month, rest of the world in GSM form in Dec/Jan. AT&T never sees the Pre 2 in any form, and Sprint may get it at a later date. I DO expect the upcoming "mansion" highend device to possibly be a short (60 day?) exclusive for someone, maybe Sprint if it's offered in WiMax form.

please stop blaming the Pre's fail on Sprint. Sprint delivers the best value by far of any carrier.

the iPhone's success wasn't stagnated by AT&T.

the EVO's success wasn't stagnated by Sprint.

if you make a great product - they will come.

I never blamed Sprint for the Pre's failure. We all know it comes down to marketing. Heck, Apple did genius marketing with a hobbled first gen iPhone that had no apps, no MM, and no video and yet at full price, people lined up to buy it. Marketing is everything. HP will throw considerable marketing might behind Web OS. It would be really funny if the Pre 2 sold well thanks to better marketing by HP. The truth is that, whatever HP does with the first Smartphone they do with Web OS will be the best option available to AT&T customers who don't want an iPhone. I'm praying for a better option than that. I don't want to drink the coolaid and be "assimilated", so I'm hoping and praying for the next Pre to kill the iPhone.

all of the best marketing in the world won't help a shitty product.

and you think HP (and Uncle Leo) is such a great marketer that they can turn chicken shit into chicken salad?

let me ask you something - how many HP smartphone ads or commercials have you ever seen? how many HP smartphones do you see out there in the wild?

Attributing Apple's success with the iPhone to marketing is like attributing the ocean to the rain. Marketing is part of it, yes. But rain can only swell the ocean, not create it. Great marketing can only give a good product legs, but not sell a lousy product.

Looking at the leaked prices for the Pre2 on the SFR website, its going for 99Euros on contract. That usually translates to 99 dollars in the US. This is an interim phone aimed at the middle segment of the market. If the price is right I think a lot of people may take a punt just to try it out. The high end device will not appear til next year.

As for marketing... anyone who tells me that the marketing for the original Palm Pre was not a complete disaster is definitely in cloud cuckoo land. Marketing makes a big difference... I am not saying that the Pre would have been a rip-roaring success, but it could have helped maintained mindshare and keep things ticking over.

The original iPhone had nothing going for it other than the Apple logo and fancy user interface. There were no apps. It didn't do multi-media messaging. The camera didn't even take video or have zoom. People bought it because it was an Apple product, not because it was a great product. It was a hobbled product. Apple MARKETING is what sold that product. Not it's functionality or capabilities. People will buy anything with an Apple logo, no matter the price, because it's a fashion statement. Nothing more.

As for the Pre, I have to say that my Pre Plus is the only smart phone I've ever had that had no problems whatsoever. I can't speak on the original Pre because I didn't have one, but my Pre Plus just works. I only wish it had a larger Screen and an SD card slot.

It's worth noting that a lot of people buy iphones to use with windows computers. The market is not strictly Apple zealots.

Pre2

ewl @ 10/19/2010 7:39:40 PM # Q
I'm not impressed by any wireless carrier's salespeople. But Pre2 on VZW can have a better outcome this time around since a stock pre2 will have good performance and better build quality. I have a Pre+ which is fine but there is room for improvement. The Pre2 will stand out for its compactness compared to the slabs that have taken over the world. It may have a respectable sales as the midpoint webOS device.
