GSM Palm Centro Spotted at CES

While Palm does not have an active booth presence at the 2008 CES, several Palm-related tidbits have managed to emerge from the show. The latest Palm-related report from CES further confirms the impending release of a GSM Centro running the Garnet OS. TreoCentral spotted a white GSM Centro at an undisclosed Palm accessory manufacturer's booth and has posted a brief summary of their findings. They managed to get a few minutes with the device and take some reasonably high-quality shots of the unit's keyboard as well as its battery compartment. One interesting fact from their brief hands-on time was that the GSM Centro's keyboard is slightly more angled than its CDMA brethren. No word as of yet if this going to remain on the production GSM Centro or if this is an older, pre-production mockup with a different keyboard design.

GSM Palm CentroPIC has covered the widely-rumored GSM Centro for several months, beginning in August when Palm legal requested the removal of our earliest shots and video of a GSM Centro, then followed by leaked images of a white GSM Centro running on the Orange network. This early hint posted by PDAFrance predated even the CDMA version’s arrival on Sprint’s domestic network. Then this was followed with a leaked image of a black GSM Centro running on the AT&T network in October. A ZDnet blog then tipped us off to the upcoming release of a GSM version in November. Finally, later in November we covered the interesting story of the Palmdoc.net site posting a detailed hands-on review of a GSM Centro that was abruptly removed at the request of Palm's legal department.

On the company's to do list for a while has been an overhaul of its aging (5 years old) operating system. Palm has finally added to its calendar a target date for the release of its upgrade: the end of this year.

But it won't be until early next year that Palm will actually start selling gadgets that run it.

The same timeframe was spoken about in the last Palm conference call:

Umm, it should be news to anyone that visits PIC that Palm's plans and their ability to execute to plan are two totally separatre things. In fact If Palm says it can get OS2 or whatever they are calling it out by early 2009, I would expect mid 2010 and buggy as hell.

The interesting part was not in the post above, but the in the content of the link posted in the post above - to wit:

== "...The plan, Maes said, is to get the new OS out to developers
== toward the end of the year..."

which states outright that PALM is nowhere close to having a new OS DESIGNED much less implemented.

On the opposite, this means POS2 is almost there and SDK will be shipped in November

Btw, I am tired of this stupid-sounding codename, let's invent a new one. Any takers?

POSX is too close to POSIX. POSVII is really hard to pronounce (and reminds me of WII...).

How about POX?

Giggle.

Believe it or not, I just recently found out the internal codename for it via a trusted source. So I may post an article on it so we can all 'rally' around a uniform moniker.

Make it ready for use

JackG @ 1/10/2008 12:48:43 PM # Q
I'd rather they take a little extra time if need be and release it as bug free as is humanly possible, then to early release it full of bugs and issues.

And for a name, I'll weigh in with PLinux.
