Pre Shows Up on Leaked Sprint Roadmap

Palm Pre Sprint Release LeakPhoneNews.com has posted what appears to be an internal comprehensive set of slides which details Sprint's planned 2009 smartphone roadmap. The deck includes a couple of mentions of the Palm Pre and a number of other unannounced devices.

The Palm Pre's slides (posted after the break) list the launch date as TBD Q2'09, which unfortunately isn't any clearer than Palm's standard "first half of the year" response. There are some other interesting details to note though. A couple of code names for the Pre are potentially listed. The device itself is labeled the Palm P100 in one slide and WebOS is referred to as Linux Palm Neutron OS in another.

Palm Pre Sprint Release

The Palm Pre slide above also details some specifications that are in-line with previous mentions. The Memory ROM/RAM is listed as 8GB/256MB, while some Sprint apps such as Sprint TV, the Sprint Music Store are confirmed, Sprint NFL is TBD. The battery capacity is listed as 1150mAh, which would confirm the previous rumor, and the GPS is indeed a A-GPS.

There is also listing of 30FPS Video, but this is likely more a reference to playback, as Palm has stated that the device itself will not support video capture at launch. Items left out include a Java client and and expansion slot, to the disappointment of many.

Specs are identical to what was given at CES

hkklife @ 3/16/2009 1:13:10 PM # Q
"Neutron" isn't too far removed from "Nova"

"Monk" is merely the Treo Pro which is already out. Notice the suspicious absence of any future WinMob-based Treos. Maybe the Pro is the end of a (short) era (and yes, I know what Palm has said)?

Funny how we haven't seen anything definitive on the roadmap or otherwise on whether or not the Pre has its tethering/DUN capabilitie unlocked. Just becuase the hardware & OS support it doesn't mean the carrier won't lock it out. At CES they said it was capable of it then the initial Sprint ads came out saying it had it and then that point was removed from the ad. My guess is that it may not be functioning at launch but it'll appear later.

Excuse the imagery, but maybe Palm has prostituted themselves long enough. If they can really make a comeback with webOS, who knows? Why help WinMob sell if you don't have to?

Is WebOS listed as Neutron?

Looks to me like the Pre's OS is listed as Neutron.

Could WebOS instead be the server-based side of things?

Or perhaps they are gonna semi-officially rebrand it due to the bland-sounding "WebOS" ?

Or (giggle) perhaps "Neutron" is WebOS with a Garnet emulation layer and/or some additional functionality not seen at CES strapped on top?

Actually the slide suggests (to me anyway) that WebOS is the GUI layer and Neutron is the base Linux OS. It could also imply that WebOS could be seen on top of winmob and therefore the Treo Pros.

A-GPS

Assisted GPS is a method of positioning that uses cell tower triangulation and Wifi access points in order to assist the true GPS radio in identifying your position faster.

The "A" part is a complement, not a supplement. It has true GPS, and it's a little smarter as well.

Pardon, not totally doubting but do you have a link supporting that?

There was a fairly tremendous brouhaha over on TreoCentral about the lack of "true GPS" on one of the Treos, not due to hardware shortcomings but apparently software shortcomings.

^^ Ars Technica recently wrote a long, very thorough explanation of how A-GPS works:

That doesn't make sense, it has to be referencing video capture. They already showed video playback and its listed here as TBD.

RE: Video
hkklife @ 3/17/2009 9:17:48 AM # Q
It makes perfect sense to me. Palm repeatedly stated at CES that the Pre's camera was still shots only and that they could not promise video capture in the future via an update. They said it was "one of those things" that had to be left out and no one really used video capture anyway. Of course, they then went on to tout the quality of the Pre's camera compared to most other phone cams, so the likely reason that video capture isn't in there is due to wanting to mimic Apple and/or leave an opportunity to sell a $20 pre video recorder app at some point in the future.

My old 2mp digicam took grainy 15-second 320x240. My 5mp camera after that took longer videos with less compression at the same resolution. My 7mp camera took VGA videos @ 15 fps. My current camera takes XGA videos @ 15fps and VGA videos @ 15fps. I use video recording more and more with each generation of camera as the image quality and storage capabilities increase. I guess Palm and Apple are too concerned about users filling up their non-expandable memory to give us this choice.

Or they couldn't figure out how to have video capture but still allow phone/WebOS functions to continue to work.

I'm saying I believe the "video 30fps" is not a spec for video playback. Its for video capture and the feature is TBD. PIC mention that they believe its video playback.
