Classic Palm OS Garnet Emulation Coming to WebOS?

Palm Classic Palm OS WebOS EmulatorPalmInfocenter just got some additional demo time in with the Palm Pre today at the Sprint VIP lounge at CTIA in Las Vegas. We will be posting some video and additional coverage shortly, but one thing really caught our eye that we had to get out first.

The Pre's in use at the Sprint VIP lounge are running on a newer build since the CES demo's and Palm is showing some additional third party apps (more on these later). We caught a glimpse of a new app called "Classic" in the launcher that looks like a traditional PDA icon. Of course, I immediately asked if this was some sort of Palm OS emulation/compatibilty app, however the Palm rep would not talk about it. However, the rep did hint that more about this may be revealed later today, presumably at the Web 2.0 keynote. Click the pic at the right for a larger view and stay tuned for more CTIA coverage on the way.

We don't know any concrete details at the moment, so we don't know if this is a true emulator, javascript sandbox or even some sort of separate native environment. Check back later today for further updates.

Update:
The Classic Palm OS Emulator has been officially announced. We have also posted a video demo as well.

This tickled my brain on a comment from a founder of Styletap a few months back- total speculation given the span of time since then of course, but it's fun to do so:

End of Contract with Sprint- to become a "Pre-vert" or go Android?

Amazing how Palm knocked off the TealOS interface, isn't it?

If it happens don't thank Palm

Thank StyleTap. The threat of StyleTap ported to the i-phone is the only thing that would make Palm do it. Palm must be befuddled that the Fandango and Facebook apps didn't automatically make the phone a must have for everybody. Hopefully StyleTap got to write it. Knowing how Palm treated Tealpoint makes me doubt it. Palm thinks as little of the developers who breathed life into their devices for years as they do the users who bought them.
