Palm Eos Detailed Again, 2nd Half of 2009?

Palm EosRumor: Lotta Palm news for a Sunday and it keeps on coming... the latest rumor is that the Palm Eos, now being billed as a Centro successor, could be headed to AT&T soon. Engadget has posted a slide capture of an internal AT&T doc that lists the specs and plans for the Palm Eos (Castle).

The Palm Eos is said to have a Centro-like qwerty form-factor. The slide lists a 2H 09 (second half of 2009) as a possible release date. It is a GSM powered smartphone which will presumably run WebOS. It has a 2.63-inch, 320 x 400 capacitive touchscreen, 4GB storage, POP3, IMAP, and EAS support and a very slim design.

The Eos is said to be exceptionally slim. It will measure 55mm x 111mm (~ 2.1" x 4.3" inches), weigh 100 grams (3.52 ounces) and come in at only 10.6mm (.42" inches) thin. It has also been rumored to be heading to Sprint as well, though no dates are certain.

I would presume PalmOS

Not sure why all youse guys are saying ":WebOS" when the slide outright says a "new PalmOS experience".

SV, I think you are right. Palm is going to release another Garnet upgrade and put it on this phone. Or maybe even a Cobalt phone! Or maybe they are going to purchase WinMo and release yet another "new Palm OS"!! Or maybe even another OS that they've been working on in super stealth mode all this time!!! Think of the possibilities!!!!

Wow, this is all very exciting.

Hey Palm! Where's my PDA with Wifi and phone capabilities?

SV, that is the silliest thing I have heard in ages. "PalmOS" as in what runs on the Centro and its predecessors doesn't support a number of the features of this device:

-GSM 3G (UMTS/HSPA) are not supported
-BT 2.1 & A2DP are not supported
-320x400 resolution is not supported
-No native GPS functionality in the OS
-In addition, it's highly unlikely that Garnet could run natively on the MSM7225 chipset.

No, if this device appears, it'll be a WebOS-powered device. Garnet is DEAD, DEAD, DEAD!

Kris, after further "research", I'm pretty sure it's an Android device with Palm's own "special sauce" UI layer on top. What's more, I've discover that this UI layer is actually TealOS that Palm has recently purchased from TealPoint Software. So that's how they are billing it at the "New Palm OS experience". You don't really get webOS, but you sorta think you are running it.

Maybe it will be running the webOS kernel but with only one app allowed to run -- the Classic PalmOS emulator. Stranger things have happened.

Maybe it is actually webOS, but they've come to their senses and realized they shouldn't use a trademark that often sounds just like "Testicles" to around 500 million people?

That would be funny if true - and it certainly could be true, huh?

Lol!

Also the control layout is WebOS, not Garnet.

Huh? EOS video?

mikecane @ 5/24/2009 5:31:05 PM # Q
How is it the EOS has "video capture enabled" but so far AIK, no video with the Pre itself?

Because PalmOS can do it but WebOS can't?

Because the video app isn't ready yet but is expected to be done by the time the Eos ships?

Repeat after me....

twrock @ 5/24/2009 6:33:27 PM # Q
Palm, please repeat after me:
"Our next device will have at least a 3.5" screen."
Say this over and over and over and over again until it starts to sink in.
Thanks.

I'm personally rooting for a credit card sized device. Remember the second gen iPod Nano? The one that looked like a fat little iPod? Imagine if that device were about 30% longer and all screen except for a tiny button and gesture area at the bottom (half an inch should be enough). By my reckoning that would be big enough at least a 3.1" screen. No removable battery, no phone, no wifi, only Bluetooth and a virtual keyboard. I don't know that I'd buy it but I would love to see it made.

DR, ok, you can ask for that device too. But there was a significant number of people asking for Palm to give us a large screen converged device so many years ago that I can't remember now how long it has been. It was way before the announcement of the iPhone, the device that proved beyond a shadow of doubt that there was a large market for what we'd been asking for.

Why stop there, ask for a phone the size of the ones in the movie zoolander. Smaller is not always better.

Nebari @ 5/25/2009 10:09:23 AM # Q
Yes. Large screen please. Although I think the Pre with a large screen would be better than this layout.

I want a replacement for my T3. It is literally falling apart. I think the Sena case is the only thing holding the plastic bits around the connector together.

I still have problems with what this doesn't have and am not sold on the whole "cloud" thing (just sync to my desktop and I will be happy).

I want the large screen for Mobipocket as it is my most used app after Calendar and Contacts.

No new handhelds

vetdoctor @ 5/24/2009 6:37:45 PM # M Q
We are a phone company. What would we know about handhelds anyway?

Good move for palm. I think I predicted this. A new Centro with WebOS to break in all those Centro users. Later they can move up to the Pre II.

Deja vu...i think I posted this a month ago.

Not sure it's a big improvement over the Centro...

bhartman34 @ 5/25/2009 8:48:33 AM # Q
The main thing I haven't liked about my Centro over the time I've had it (about a year + 4 months) is the form factor. The bigger screen on the Pre is a good selling point for me, and if the keyboard is bigger, the Pre looks even better.

On the other hand, if the Eos has WebOS, and is on AT&T, it will be tempting for me to upgrade to it -- especially if it's out in the second half of 2009, and not too much later than the Pre. To go with Sprint when the Pre comes out, I'd have to break my contract, which looks like it'd cost me $175. Even if I bought it from Best Buy, that's still $375, which isn't chump change.

AT&T is pushing the iPhones pretty hard to upgraders. When I went to check my upgrade status, it said I'm eligible for an upgrade to a new phone in July, but I'm eligible for a discount on an iPhone before that.

bhartman34 @ 5/25/2009 8:53:59 AM # Q
Actually, I take back the comment about being eligible for an iPhone before the regular upgrade. They're actually the same date. They just list them separately.

Seems like Sprint should be willing to pay $175 to Verizon in order to get a new customer. They should make it public policy...we will but the tail end of your contact for a 2 year contract with us.

I think that'd be a great policy. I doubt they'd go for it, though. With the Pre costing $200 (after rebate) w/ the 2-year contract, if they paid $175, they would essentially be selling the Pre for $25.

vetdoctor @ 5/25/2009 4:35:09 PM # M Q
Forget the phone...Sprint is selling airtime. I am making the large assumption of same contracts as the Pre: $100/mo x 24 months. Would you pay someone $175 in exchange for $2400?

If I could be guaranteed to save $100 a month vs. AT&T, I would switch without hesitation. I'll have to look into that!

RE: Not sure it's a big improvement over the Centro...
bhartman34 @ 5/25/2009 7:14:54 PM # Q
Okay, I looked into it.

My current 450 plan is the same price as Sprint's plan. The difference between them is that the Sprint plan is unlimited data, whereas the plan I'm on is 5MB a month (which I assume the Pre would use up in the first few days of the month).

I assume the Sprint plan will cost a little more, because the $69 plan doesn't take into account taxes and fees.

Centro

jptx @ 5/26/2009 6:23:34 AM # Q
WHat I would change about my Centro:
Increase screen size (not neccessaariyly alot)
Get a better browser.
That would be enough

If I were greedy:
nice onboard tv remote with ir at top not side
easier to exchange microsd cards
add a hold button. flip this and not button presses do anything.

real gps would also be nice.
