GSM Palm Pre Spotted in Vietnam

While Palm has acknowledged that a GSM/UMTS version of the Palm Pre would be released since CES, sightings of said device have been few and far between. The last time the illusive GSM Pre was seen was at the Mobile World Congress back in February. Now it has made a another appearance, strangely enough, on a Vietnamese mobile enthusiast forum.

A poster going by username dihuta has posted a series of high resolution shots of a GSM Pre on the Tinhte forum. The pictures show, in great detail, a GSM sporting Pre running on "VN Mobifone" along with a number of shots of the back cover and SIM card tray. There is also a seven minute YouTube video clip as well, which is embedded after the break.

Leading the tech news at ABC this morning is this report that owners of the Palm (PALM) "Pre" smartphone are grumbling about the manufacturing quality of the device, which is somewhat surprising given all the focus has been on the device's snazzy "Web OS" operating system software. Writing of cracked screens, gapping edges and faulty action on the slide-out keyboard, ABC cites posts on the blog precentral.net, under a thread titled "horrible build quality." There, users have been commenting on dead pixels on the touch screen and discoloration, while other users say their units are just fine and are raging about "trolls" posting possibly erroneous problems in an effort to tarnish the device's reputation. The ABC piece says it got no response in inquiries with Palm itself, and quotes analyst Ed Snyder with Charter Equity Research as saying the problems are to be expected with new devices.

Hopefully, unlocked GSM units will be for sale WORLD WIDE. Had to play games with the Palm website to get my unlocked Treo 680 delivered to Canada.

I hired a personal shopper for mine. (No, seriously!)

Never again, though. My first 680's headphone jack died. Scared the bejesus outta me and was a big hassle getting it replaced. With all the reports of dodgy Pres out there I want to make sure it's easily exchangeable this time around.

It's a risk you have to take...I ordered Palm T3 from eBay in June 2005. The device was well known back then to have the following common issues:
1. slider fails, or becomes to loose.
2. pixels tend to die.
3. a high pitched hum
So I took the risk... even though there was no where I could fix it if something broke. Today, exactly 4 years later, my T3 is still in excellent working condition, no problems... I just waited for a worthy device to replace it with and I think, after all those years, that the Pre is the one.

It's the whole "once burned, twice shy" thing, I guess. You can take the gamble - and most times, you'll win - but it really, really sucks if you lose.

That said, I'll probably wind up caving once it's actually released. :)

The good thing about not being able to buy the Pre right away is that by the time we do have the ability to purchase it, there will be lots of software, cool software hacks... and the price will probably be a little less than launch day. But the biggest advantage is that the Palm Eos will be available or at least we will know it's specs well enough to decide if we want to wait a little more and get it instead of the Pre.
