Quickies: AOL, AIM for Palm and ATT Global Dialer Update

AOL, AIM for Palm
On August 30, AOL officially released the final 1.0 version of AIM for the Palm OS. You can download it here. Also, AOL recently released AOL Mail for the Palm OS, however it also contains AOL Instant messenger within it. You can download it here.

ATT Global Dialer Update
Finally, ATT Global Network has released an update to their Palm OS dialer, version 1.2. Previously, a user using Palm OS 3.3+ would have to change the dialed number in Prefs, but now the dialer automatically dials the selected number in the program itself. This can be downloaded here. NOTE: The ATT Global website does NOT reflect the version change, however the program is in fact the updated version.

No AIM for Palm VII?! :(

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/12/2000 11:04:35 AM #
Is there anything technical barring AOL from releasing a version of AIM for the Palm VII/Palm.net service? Would a "push" service like instant messaging be inherently incompatible with the cellular standard used by palm.net? The Palm VII is absolutely dandy, but having instant messaging caabilities would push it over the edge of awesomeness into the land of total, unsurpassed greatness.

If there _is_ nothing barring it, does anybody have a means of contacting AOL to voice our desire for a Palm VII app?

Yes, there is a technical barrier that doesn't allow things to be "pushed" to the Palm VII. The only way you can get around the barrier is to have an AIM app that polls for new messages - but your antennae must remain up and it's excessive drain on batteries. Another solution which the ICpQa app does is allow someone to respond to you via email - but you still have to check your email for new ICQ messages.

Neither of these options is very appealing. I'm hoping the next iteration of devices from Palm will be able to do true TCP/IP connections similar to OmniSky and with an optional retractable antennae and have color screens ;-) I still love my VIIx though despite these shortcomings....

That's what I figured, the app would need to "check" for a change of status every few seconds. Still, I would be willing to deal witht his, even if it is a major battery drain, as I use recharagables anyway (which I think any Palm VII user with the unlimited usage service plan ought to consider!)

Oh well, I doubt anything will come of it. :(

Still, my Palm VII is probably the coolest techno-toy I have ever owned. It would just be cooler with instant-messaging capabilities. ;)

The latest rumor I've heard is that Palm will introduce a color version of the VIIx at Comdex this Fall. I haven't a clue if there is any truth in this but it is at least something to hope for.

Plus PalmOS doesn't support multitasking so your Palm VII would have to be in the AIM appliation the whole time.
