New PluggedIn@Palm Program to Assist Developers

Palm, Inc.has announced the PluggedIn@Palm Program to help developers quickly create and launch new accessories and add-ons and aid in the transition to using the SD/MMC slot. The program is designed to help during every phase of development, from early concept and development through distribution and marketing. The program formalizes and expands the services Palm already has been providing select hardware developers.

Many of the PluggedIn@Palm services are in place today, but a comprehensive set of tools, relationships and referrals will roll out over the next several months. Services available today include:

  • expansion parts store, through which developers can buy small quantities of components such as Secure Digital (SD) cards and Multimedia Cards (MMC) at low prices;
  • third-party product distribution through Palm.com;
  • manufacturing assistance via preferred manufacturing vendors; and
  • developer technical support.
"Palm developers are tremendously creative, and we want to help them speed products to market," said Alan Kessler, chief operating officer of Products and Platform at Palm, Inc. "Our size, our global reach and our contacts can help developers find the right manufacturing partner, the right go-to-market strategy and a quick path to customers via our own online Palm Store."

Palm assuring its survival

CKMOOSE @ 11/9/2000 3:07:06 AM #
Palm seems to have a good grasp on what makes a platform succeed or fail and are expanding on it.

Your primary hardware is only as good as the software and peripherals. Supporting your developers is the best way to assure your longevity.

It also keeps Palm's risk factor low. By assisting developers, they get more product to market with less initial risk.
It's very smart to help a company get a product out and reap the rewards of the successful ones and not take the financial hit for the failures.

The Stowaway Keyboard being a prime example. Think Outside developed and market tested it. Palm adopted it, branded it and both companies benefitted. Very smart.
I don't think Palm is out of the game yet as some on this board have predicted.

Cool Stuff

There's a lot of really neat stuff available on the site. The above report gives you a good idea but I was really impressed when I took a look. Like blank sleds for V's and empty modem cases for III's, etc. Blank hotsync cables that you could use to connect your Palm to your Tivo (whoo hoo), etc. CAD files for the cases, blank cases...
