Sierra Wireless Modems Coming for Clié
AirCard |
Sierra Wireless will create the AirBoard for Clié, an attachment for Sony's handheld that will allow it to use some of Sierra Wireless's PC Card AirCard modems. Clié users will be able to use either the CDPD or Ricochet version of the modem. These can also be used in laptops, allowing users to access the Internet from two devices with only one modem. These should be available in the second quarter of this year.
Sony had already announced that Go America would be the wireless access provider for its handheld. Joe Korb, president for GoAmerica, said, "Our continued relationships are an important aspect of our strategy to meet the ever increasing demands of the mobile professional, offering wireless access to the information they need, when and how they want it."
Giving the Clié access to the high-speed access of Ricochet is an important development for users. Metricom is currently in the process of rolling out 128 kbps networks in major cities all across the U.S. John Wernke, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sales for Metricom, said "The combination of Sierra Wireless and Sony products and services with our high-speed Ricochet 128 kbps network will provide GoAmerica's handheld users true freedom to take the network with them and wirelessly access information anytime."
