Palm SD applications and pictures
Thanks to Brad Spry for sending me a link to a Japanese site (translated link) that has some pictures of Palm SD applications that were being shown at CES this week.
Palm chose to support the SD card for use in its brand of handheld computers because of the numerous advantages the card format offers, which includes compatibility, cost, data storage access and security. As an open industry standard, the SD Card is already supported by over 60 companies including Hewlett Packard, NEC, Pioneer, Qualcomm and Thomson. Many of these companies are already developing MP3 players/recorders, digital cameras and smart phones, which will be SD compatible. Because of the card's widespread industry support, it is expected to proliferate in the consumer electronics market and be compatible with a large array of products. Read on for larger pictures of the devices.

Palm is just in bed with the big media companies and that's sad as it's just hurting the users.
RE: Trash
Next time know what you're talking about before you trash the palm.

I'm saying they could do a MUCH better job and not implement something that the media industries approve (they only approve stuff that protects their cash flow). Sure SD is better than no SD but something like compact flash is still far better.
Also I'd be willing to bet that beaming of MP3s will not be supported. Even if it was it would take forever to beam even a 4-5 meg MP3. Have you ever noticed how long it takes to beam say a 300k document?
Actually I use my visor only for PIM functions so I'd really have no use for MP3 playback but it's still disheartening to see Palm hype up an inferior technology that's just meant to protect the media companies.
RE: Trash
Remind me to not invest in any company you ever run. What kind of logic is there in not working together with the media industry to implement media on the Palm? Of course they only approve stuff that protects cash flow, show me a successful company that does stuff that jeopardizes its cash flow???

Secondly, I think the overarching fact here is that Palm is late to the game once again. They were late to the game with collaborative web calendaring (and an app to link into web calendaring) and they are late again. SD... one word, Springboard.
I do not personally own a Handspring, however, I wish I had bought one. Here is a company that got all of this stuff right and implemented the first time around... and at a lower cost that Palm. It is still a wonder to me that Palm has the majority of market share. I guess people are really looking at marketing budgets when they shop for a handheld these days.
So whether it is Handspring or Yahoo that is beating them to the punch, the least Palm could do is save us, the customers, the agony of anticipation when all that lies on the other side is a hackneyed, slightly modified (and restricted) technology that Palm is slapping its name on. Get some original ideas or get out of the game.

Take a look at the plexi PalmV in the showcase picture - You see that well in the Upper Left corner? That's the SD socket. SD cards are about the size of your thumbprint, if you've got small hands.
Now take a moment to think about the Visor, and how long it took people to (barely) squeeze a camera or a MP3 player into a Springboard - Then remember that SD carts are something like 1/6 the size.

Besides being an "open" standard with multiple devices/manufactures and OS's... They have WORKING Modems, bluetooth, barcode wands, seial. In the pipeline are wireless (802.11u), GPS and maybe a MP3.
By the time these pritty looking SD cards come out with these functions we will be told there is a better standard on the horizon, not to mention some of our existing devices with a SD slot will be incompatable and will require an upgrade to work with the new SD cards anyway. (This always happens when desinging support for future devices that dont exist yet).

Well I guess there isn't a real, working CF Bluetooth card.
RE: Are these for real?
Well have you seen those sony laptops with a small camera on them that are the size of an AA battery? And sony already has a working camera on a memory stick. So these are possibly real modules. Cameras have become smaller and smaller and its an easy task for them to make it, i'm sure.
