Two New Tools for Developers

AppForge, Inc. has introduced an entry-level "Personal Edition" of their Visual Basic programming platform. It is specifically designed for hobbyists and contains many of the features of other AppForge Editions such as support for graphics, serial port communications, and Palm OS Extended Library calls. It requires VB 6 and sells for $70. -Ed

Pencel Corporation has launched Kinectivity Studio, a database application tool aimed at enabling delivery of corporate data on mobile devices. Applications created with Kinectivity Studio are deployed on Kinectivity, Pencel’s mobile extended relational database platform that integrates with a variety of back-end database and application software.

Chris Maloney, Pencel’s president and CEO, said “The Kinectivity system provides the ability to create a user interface and application logic specific to the needs of individual enterprises and the capability to integrate with a variety of data sources.”

Kinectivity and Kinectivity Studio accomplish this objective by providing a define-and-deploy system, allowing the creation of custom mobile applications without the requirement of specialized development resources. The system provides the configurable components most often needed for mobile database applications, including user interface, data validation, and data exchange connections.

The Kinectivity database platform consists of software on the corporate server as well as on the mobile device. The server component connects to the enterprise systems and manages the data flow to and from the mobile devices through wired and wireless connections. Kinectivity currently supports devices based on the Palm operating system, with plans to expand to Microsoft’s Pocket PC platform and RIM Blackberry devices.

Kinectivity Studio provides a single, visual environment in Windows 9x/NT/2000 for the development of mobile database applications. A drag-and-drop editing system is used to describe the user interface as well as the design of the data schemas, application logic, and data flow through Kinectivity’s built-in conduit. Sophisticated applications can be developed entirely within Kinectivity Studio’s visual environment without the need for procedural programming. To provide even greater flexibility in application design, access is provided to RoverScript, a JavaScript-based scripting language.

Companies interested in evaluating Kinectivity Studio can download a trial version at the company’s Web site. Price depends on the number of licences; for more information, a price chart is available. -Dana Book

Who is using AppForge?

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/25/2001 11:34:46 AM #
With Appforge's huge runtime are there any hobbiests out there using it? If so what for and what do you think about it? How does it compare to CASL and NS Basic? As a satisfied CASL customer I do not see the advantages of AppForge over these other environments. I like the idea of using VB and the new reduced price, now I would like to know if it really is useful.
