AOL Preparing New Palm Apps

America Online is now testing internal alpha versions of two new Palm apps. The first is AOL for Palm 3.0. New features include allowing users to connect with a TCP/IP connection using another ISP, even a wireless one. They are developing a conduit to allow users to HotSync their AOL mail onto their handhelds, allowing them to read and create messages without a modem. AOL for Palm 2.0 users can already read their e-mail and send instant messages when connected.

The other new application is AOL Express 1.0. This is a Web clipping app to allow access to some of AOL's services, including e-mail and MyAOL content.

The company is also beta testing the AOL Address Book Sync, which allows uses to sync their AOL address book with the Palm's Address Book.

AOL members should look under Keyword: 'Palm Beta' to learn more.

where?

I've been a AOL Palm beta tester for some time now. I went to the Palm beta area and so no such mention of this news.

Ed @ 5/18/2001 9:25:04 AM #
These aren't in beta testing yet. As the article says, these are "internal alpha versions". Unless you work for AOL, you can't see them. But keep checking the Palm Beta area. They will show up when they are a bit more polished.

But the AOL Address Book Sync should be there already. Is it?

Tying up with AOL might save Palm

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/18/2001 10:27:07 AM #
Considering the present financial state of Palm, maybe Palm should consider partnering with AOL to launch the VII successor. Handspring tie-up with MSN for their wireless apps, so it make sense for Palm to tie-up with AOL and gain access to the twenty-plus million AOL customer. If only a small percentage sign up to the service(say 5%), that is still more than the present subscriber base of Palm.net. For AOL, it will enhance their AOL Anywhere strategy, and provide an alternative to their RIM offering.

NO, No, No, No! Why do that? Then you'll have half of palm's current customers switch since they all seem to think AOL is too novice for them! They think they are too good for AOL!

Simple solution: don't use it.

AOL & Palm O/S

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/19/2001 8:07:10 PM #
Now that's scary - AOL users with Palm devicses. What's next? Windows for Palm O/S? Who allows these big companies to force this "dumb down" mentality on these great machines?
RE: AOL & Palm O/S
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/19/2001 11:44:08 PM #
Dumb down? I know MDs and lawyers who use AOL. AOL account != stupid user. Just
someone who prefers the interface and doesn't care about idiotic AOL policies.

RE: AOL & Palm O/S
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/20/2001 9:10:02 AM #
just because their mds or lawyers doesnt meen they are smart technically speaking. Anyone who uses AOL and doesnt want to upgrade is not a smart comp user. I think that AOL sucks it is the worst internet provider that i have ever used. And I agree that it is the internet on training wheels and if it were made for the palm it would be palm on training wheels which would realllllly suuccckkkk!

RE: AOL & Palm O/S
JET8810 @ 5/20/2001 12:46:52 PM #
ok. I use AOL and i compeletely disagree with your comments. While it is made for the novice user (which I am not) all my friends have AOL and I spend a lot of time in the PDA Community in AOL. I go to the chats at night and read /reply to the message boards. So because I use AOL I am stupid? That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard!

RE: AOL & Palm O/S
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/20/2001 1:52:33 PM #
if you use AOL for your internet connection and you dont want to upgrade then i do think you are a novice. You can access all the AOL message boards and communities without using AOL internet access

RE: AOL & Palm O/S
JET8810 @ 5/20/2001 5:29:30 PM #
how can you do that?

RE: AOL & Palm O/S
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/20/2001 6:08:00 PM #
by going to aol.com and using your AIM screename to login. You can also go to the groups section of the site.

RE: AOL & Palm O/S
JET8810 @ 5/20/2001 8:36:28 PM #
it doesnt do message boards! Just seperate groups on aol.com ONLY! I use the AOL message boards and am friends with the people there...nice try though...

JET8810 @ 5/21/2001 6:45:20 AM #
oh and also, to the guy above that thinks im a novice, I have no need to change providers...for what? So i can say that i am not smart? I mean come on!

Lamers go mobile

ray1083 @ 5/21/2001 12:50:21 AM #
Do you think there are many AOL users out there that can figure out how to use a palm device?
RE: Lamers go mobile
JET8810 @ 5/21/2001 6:41:37 AM #
ok...what the hell is up with you people? Do you all think that every memeber of AOL is a complete idiot? I use AOL and i am not an idiot. The PDA Community leader, Susan Gustafson is definetly not an idiot, she is a PDA EXPERT as a matter of fact. She has owned all PDAs froim Zaurus to Ipaq. As a matter of fact, weha6t you people are doing is really like stereotyping, you are saying that ALL AOL members are idiot. That is like saying that all African-American people are stupid as well. It is compeletly false, and uneccesary!

RE: Lamers go mobile
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/21/2001 4:34:07 PM #
AOL was wildly successful at luring every Joe Blow onto the internet, and as an unfortunate result, the rest of the net was subjected to poor netiquette, especially on usenet, by AOLers who were ignorant of the ways of the internet. To add insult to injury, while AOL released hordes of newbies on the rest of the internet community, they corralled off their own network - boards and such - and required membership and the paying of hefty fees to access this material.

So, this is why folks have bad impressions of AOL users, BUTBUTBUT they obviously cannot all be classified as lamers. Just because someone is not technically inclined does not preclude them from being potential customers of Palm/AOL.

RE: Lamers go mobile
JET8810 @ 5/21/2001 8:51:47 PM #
ok. Here we go again. First though, i must thank you for the fact that you were a little more kind than the other ignorant SOBS. Now, you mentioned that even though AOL users are not technically inclined they can still buy palms...whats that supposed to mean? You seem to bve almost as bad as the others! I use AOL so this makes me stupid? Well i guess there is no way to change ignorant minds...it took many years for people to realize that all people are equal, skin color aside. I guess this is a high-tech version of that...the same way people say Jews are cheap, Jews have big noses and Cubans are loud. It is completely false and although some people may be like that, not everybody is. How mmany more times must i say this? Evben if 50% of AOL are novice comp users...what about the other 50%? You just forget them? You ignore that they exist? Problems like this have been going on for centuries and i guess it isn't gonna change now...i mean why should it? Why should people have open minds? Why shouldn't people remain ignorant fools?

AOL and Palm
PalmPowered @ 5/22/2001 10:11:46 AM #
Just because someone uses AOL for internet access doesn't mean they are less technologically endowed than the rest of the world. Having tried tried numerous other providers, I have enevitably always come back to AOL because it works best for what I need it to do. Making disparaging comments about a provider is probably indicative of bad personal experience with it...but that doesn't mean the rest of us should drop them and go with someone else just because a few individuals feel that they have been enlightened with super abilities. As for the comment about AOL having brought millions of novice users to the internet...I was not aware that the internet was the exclusive purvew of a few rather than a forum where information can be obtained and shared and the sum of human knowledge increased. Stop feeling threatened by those whom you feel are lesser beings than yourselves and embrace them-the dollars they spend are the reason the internet is where it is today and where it will be tomorrow.

Yes! This is great! This makes it easier to get my mail without a modem, although it would be tyght! I have an m505

Ha!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/21/2001 9:29:44 PM #
AOL is absolutely the worst distortion of internet possible. AOL is not real internet, it is proxied. Yes, ALL AOL users are LAMERS, otherwise they'd have a REAL ISP!
RE: Ha!
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/21/2001 10:08:15 PM #
AMEN!

RE: Ha!
Tomcatt1 @ 5/22/2001 1:29:08 AM #
If you are not interested in AOL apps for Palm, then why are you continuing to make disparaging remarks about AOL, especially as an anonymous user? I happen to use AOL because it provides an easy way for my daughter to access email and other areas for young people. Just because someone uses AOL doesn't necessarily mean they are technologically nor socially ignorant, unlike yourself.

sure...

indi @ 5/22/2001 9:30:51 AM #
sorry to say, but regardless of your excuse for using AOL, by using AOL you are not on contributing to the monopoly they have, you are perpetuating the myth that AOL is "real and quality internet." While they do offer access to the internet, they are not an ISP... AOL is an online service! If you use AOL for the purpose of accessing the internet you need to accept the fact that any techno-aware person is going to brand you as a LAMER. AOL Email quality is so far below par it is simply laughable... go on continue to use AOL and the rest of us will just be passing you on the technological highway. As far as I am personally concerned ther is absolutely no reason to choose AOL; every service the provide is available elsewhere and generally they are of higher quality.
RE: sure...
Tomcatt1 @ 5/23/2001 12:01:57 AM #
So am I a LAMER if I use AOL to access the Internet, then browse the web with Opera, IE and Netscape, and connect to IRCs? I don't like all of AOL, and I have had other ISP's, (@home, peoplepc, msn). AOL seems easier for my needs at this time having a young person in the house that is learning to get online and send email. Will I continue with AOL? Maybe, but that doesn't make me a LAMER or technologically inferior. I doubt that I'm being passed technologically as I work for a major electronics component corporation and am close to completing my degree in Network Administration.

RE: sure...
JET8810 @ 5/23/2001 5:22:18 PM #
Tomcatt, I agree. Sure, AOL is the easiest ISP of all to use, but because i use it it doesnt make me a LAMER. You people can call me whatever you want but I am a comupter junkie (I admit it) and since im a kid and all my friends are on AOL, so i use it. Simple enough. I'm sure your highly knowledgable, technologicall brains can understand that.

About time

Rebecca @ 5/23/2001 10:47:31 AM #
I think it's great that AOL is creating a conduit for getting their e-mail on the handhelds w/o a modem. Some people can't afford to buy a modem on top of the price of the PDA.

RE: AOL SUCKS

Nick @ 6/11/2001 7:48:22 PM #
AOL = Stupid user? Y? I have used AOL and yes, it does mess up. But usually it is something wrong with my PC. And that takes a smart person to fix an IRQ conflict w/ a modem...I was also plagued by a hacker named "CombatCarl." AOL's terms of service killed his account post-haste, when I turned him in! So, what could be wrong with their policy then? Some ISPs take days to track down Internet hackers; by that time, they have probably already corrupted your Hard Drive!
