Handspring Donates to Red Cross
Handspring has donated 500 Visor Deluxes and VisorPhones to the Red Cross and New York Police and Fire Departments to help them coordinate their efforts to help the victims and find survivors in the WTC attacks, according to Visor Central. VoiceStream is donating GSM wireless service for the phones.
They are responding to a plea from the Red Cross for technology donations. Handspring and other companies came through and the Red Cross now has everything they requested.
Joe Leo, an assistant director for the American Red Cross in Greater New York, said, "The support that we have received from the national IT community has been overwhelming. We received over a thousand offers of assistance and equipment in less than 24 hours! What we thought would be sent to five or six people has made it from sea to shining sea, awesome is the power of the Internet. What we really need most at the moment is time... time to sort through what has been offered and to reassess our needs."

Proud Visor Owner
We all kind of pick sides when we buy our first PDA. Sometimes people defect from one brand to another. Right now I'm very proud to be on the Handspring team.
God bless Handspring!
God bless America!

HandSpring Foundation
Bless the people effected and this country.
RE: HandSpring Foundation
The gesture itself is what's important. The fact that they chose to make a contribution (and this has nothing to do with Handspring, but the world in general) shows a lot.
RE: HandSpring Foundation
Actually, the donation was several days ago. I just heard about it recently, though.
I should point out that this wasn't done for publicity. Handspring itself hasn't said a word about it. The only reason anyone knows about it at all is someone from Visor Central brought the Red Cross' plea to Handspring's attention.

So, true patriots don't care about spelling, eh? Whatever, go take a chill pill and stop calling people names for stupid reasons. It was a legit point.
Palm Donated too
RE: Palm Donated too
It is wrong to profit in anyway as a result of any deaths (unless of course you are a mortician, cop, or weapons designer...)

500 Visors + VisorPhones don't cost much.
IBM, General Electric and Daimler Chrysler each donated $10 million to the red cross last week.
And 3 oil companies donated $5 million, and lots of other companies donating $1million. Total $100 million has been donated by companies. So, I don't see how they can't afford to buy their own PDAs.
RE: 500 Visors + VisorPhones don't cost much.
The relief and aid teams needed PDA-functionality and wireless communication to help coordinate their efforts. Handspring specializes in both of those, quite overtly. So they said "here, have some," and donated what they specialize in. OK, so maybe 500 older Visors and phone Springboards doesn't have the same retail value as some of the cash donations they've received. Big deal. It's that much more donated cash they have to spend on medicines, bandages, forklifts or whatever else. Yay Handspring and Palm!

Why does everything have to come down to a comparison? Isn't the gesture of aiding those in need enough? It's comments like this that disgust me. In a time like this, we shouldn't be sitting here nit-picking every little thing... GROW UP!
RE: 500 Visors + VisorPhones don't cost much.
I agree that's a dumb remark to make. Why try to compare??? So, if I only have $100 to give to the Red Cross, does that mean that my donation doesn't count as much as the big company donations? I don't agree. We give what we have, and each one counts. - ml
RE: 500 Visors + VisorPhones don't cost much.
It is great that a small company like Handspring show interest in something like this, instead of moving into apathy city. Even if it's not nowhere near the contributions made by corporations like VIA and IBM.
Live long and prosper...
everyone else has made some great comments in response...
