AI ?

antonboq @ 1/8/2002 7:38:02 AM #
It would be nice to have articifial intelligence in a PDA.. but it would be too limited, me thinks :)

or could it be a vfs game? that would be interesting too..

They say very clearly that it is not a game in the Beta test app response.

Palm RDF

Foo @ 1/8/2002 8:57:46 AM #
Did anyone catch the MacWorld keynote yesterday? Towards the beginning of Jobs oration, Palm reps marched on stage to show the new version of Palm desktop for MacOS X, which looks awesome. But I did catch the Palm rep in a little RDF when he mentioned that the sync process had now been dramatically improved. He put a Palm handheld in it's cradle...and PRESSED THE BUTTON! There wasn't even a reaction from the audience.

That confused noise you hear is coming from my head. You lost me. What does RDF mean? What's the deal about pushing the button? Isn't that how it always works? Huh?

RE: Palm RDF
Foo @ 1/8/2002 10:50:02 AM #
RDF = Reality Distortion Field

And that was my point, that pushing the button is how it has ALWAYS worked. The Palm demo tried to make it look as if that were a new process.

You are working too hard to find something to complain about. He was talking about the improved Hotsync speed and other new features.

Macworld... iWalk?
fleegle @ 1/8/2002 1:45:42 PM #
Since we are on the subject of MacWorld... I guess the iWalk was really a fake since it was supposed to be announced yesterday. That's too bad, I thought it looked pretty good.

Foo you are a goose. Plain and simple.

RE: Macworld... iWalk?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/8/2002 7:06:53 PM #
It was a fake long before a lack of announcement at Macworld proved it... anyone with half a clue and 3 seconds to spare could figure that from the video's...

When you get your "two minutes" in Steve's RDF, as the new Palm COO did on Monday at Macworld, you should be prepared to ride the ride. Mr. Palm was not... big mistake. He was stunningly boring and his info was incoherent. If he wasn't willing/able to prepare for the opp., then he should have known his people -- himself, his Mac product guy -- well enough to make the most of the time. The Palm is very cool and a great tool like the Mac is, but you'd never know it from Mr. Palm's two minutes. So goes it for Palm over the last year plus.

OSX beta and Clie?

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/8/2002 10:05:36 AM #
When the first beta was posted, Michael posted on these boards that a Sony Clie compatible beta would be posted "next week." Is this it? I haven't seen any notes as to what is different in this beta. Thanks!

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/8/2002 10:56:40 AM #
I haven't tried it myself, but I've seen reference on other boards to Clie users successfully syncing with OS X. Mounting the memory stick is still supposed to be a problem, and there's no AvantGo of course, but I'm told that basic syncing works.

The post supposedly from Michael Mace was actually a hoax and has since been removed. Ironically enough, the information given was substantially correct. I spoke with the person in charge of the development of the Palm Desktop and he said they are working to make sure that Sony handhelds can also HotSync on their Macs without third-party software. I think this is great as Palm is basically taking care of something that is really Sony's responsibility.

Incidentally, this also works fine with Handspring Visor models.

Cradle syncing with clie 760 does still not work. (I haven't tried IR yet). Also, no OS X compatible conduits are yet available...

I think it would be really smart for Palm to simply provide updates to the most popular conduits or at least work with those companies to get them ready, when they release the final Palm desktop X version.

And if they license Palm OS to Sony, then they should better make sure it works with Sony's devices.

I wish Apple would produce an "iWalk." I'm sick of Palm's lack of innovation and support.

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/8/2002 1:34:57 PM #
That last comment makes no sense. What was the last "inovative" thing that Apple has done? A flat screen monitor computer...been done.... iPod....MP3 players all over the place prior to iPod. (And yes, I think that iPod is the best of them out there...but inovative???) Newton perhaps, but that was ages ago, and look how they treated that.

RE: OSX beta and Clie?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/8/2002 4:02:21 PM #
When was the last time Apple innvoated? These are just off the top of my head...

-Developed and deployed Firewire

-The first widely available implementation of flatscreens that didn't have refresh/blur problems

-Made consumer-level digital video editing and DVD authoring possible (iMovie/iDVD)

-Made the first MP3 player I actually keep with me. People say the iPod isn't innovative, but I beg to differ. I've owned a Nomad Jukebox, PJB-100, which are good- but they both had their glaring flaws in their size and user interface. The iPod is the first to get form and function right in one device. I can navigate through hundreds of songs with one hand, no sweat.

I'm sure there is more. While I agree Apple should be doing more stunning stuff more consistently, comparing their lack of innovation to Palm's is unfair.

Palm's hardware/software implementation hasn't changed anywhere close to the same level that Apple's has over the past few years.

Palm cannot provide updates to existing third-party conduits!! But, they ARE helping those companies to make OS X compatible versions. The problem is Mac vs PC market share (I'm a Mac fan myself).

The standard OS and Desktop app Palm gave Sony do work fine together but Sony has the right to change them both, which Sony did, breaking Mac support. Maybe they did it on purpose. The 610 worded fine but later models don't. Maybe they didn't want the hassle of dealing with Mac support calls. Training support people is hard and adding mac support doubles what they have to know. Now when a Mac person calls, they can get rid of them quickly with "We don't support the macintosh." This hurts their sales a bit but they make up for it in less development and support costs. I don't like it but Sony has to do what makes them the most money.
